Job Search / Thoughts on choosing a secondary market over a primary?
« on: October 14, 2008, 06:09:25 PM »
I've narrowed my choices down to two firms.  The first is a Vault 100 firm located in a secondary market.  It is not the home office, but is probably the second most influential office of the firm.

The second is a mid-sized office (under 100) of a Vault 50 firm, located in a primary market.

Both firms have the practice areas I'm interested in, and I'm comfortable with both cities.  I'm very tempted to go with the secondary market, mainly because I really enjoyed the people at the office, but I keep having doubts about whether it is a dumb career move, and whether I'd be limiting my future options.

Any thoughts about taking a secondary market over primary?  Thanks in advance.

Transferring / Any input would be appreciated
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:02:54 PM »
I managed to finish the year Top 20% at a top 25.  Do I have a shot at any of the Top 14?  What schools?  Would it even make sense for me to leave?  Or should I just keep my substantial scholarship and continue on at my current school?

I'm aiming for Biglaw, and would want to stay on the East Coast.  I've already perused the Yahoo transfer groups site, and while marginally helpful, I was hoping to see what some others thought.  Thanks in advance.

Transferring / Georgetown from top 25?
« on: October 27, 2007, 07:08:36 PM »
Not sure if I really want to transfer or not, but just was hoping to get some input on what I would need to make it into Georgetown as a transfer.  I'm at a top 25 now, and have done well on the only assignments (memos, practice exams, etc) thus far.  I really enjoy the "school" part of it, I'm just not a huge fan of everything else attached to this particular school, if that makes sense.  Top 20% or so? I really have no idea...thanks for your help in advance.

Choosing the Right Law School / Vandy vs W&L ($$)
« on: June 06, 2007, 07:41:51 PM »
Hey guys, I've read for awhile, but never posted.  I just found out today that I was accepted to Vanderbilt, for some reason I wasn't actually waitlisted but didn't find out until today.  I had essentially decided to go to Washington and Lee, and just actually got back today from looking at places to live.  W&L offered me 23,000 a year, contingent on a 3.0, versus nothing at Vanderbilt, and it does not seem like I will be able to milk anything out of Vanderbilt.
I eventually would like to practice in either DC or the Southeast, I have no desire to be north of Maryland, or the Midwest or West Coast.  I've worked in a Biglaw firm in DC for the past year, and while I haven't ruled out that type of career, I'm very open to working in a smaller market such as Nashville, Richmond, Charlotte, or Charleston.  I think I would probably enjoy Vanderbilt a bit more, as Nashville seems like a great city (especially for a country music fan like me), but would the Vanderbilt education be that much more beneficial to someone in my situation that it would be worth the extra 70-75k in debt?  I think I'm leaning to W&L at the moment, mainly because of the money and the fact that I'm so far into the process of planning to be there in the fall.  I just want to make sure I'm not making a large mistake by turning down Vanderbilt.  Thanks for all your help.
