I just got Duke's estimate for my financial aid package and I'm really confused. Yes, I've been offered the 60k scholarship, but the only other thing that they listed was a stafford loan. So basically the scholarship and the loan cover are supposed to cover tuition. Does that mean they're not at all considering me for any need-based aid? I qualify for a pretty substantial amount. What's the point of calling it a merit scholarship if it just replaces whatever need-based aid you would have gotten? That still leaves me with about 35k in loans every year and I've seen people getting financial aid packages from the likes of Stanford without any merit-based aid, which leaves them with about the same amount of money in loans. What gives?
