2L job search / Summer Housing
« on: October 21, 2008, 08:20:33 PM »
So, I know it's too early for next summer, but how have people gone about finding summer housing?  Last summer I was in Europe and found my roommate through a website.  For this summer, I'm looking for a tall order... a furnished apartment for two people and two dogs in DC (or not too far out).

General Off-Topic Board / Help planning a trip to Houston and Austin
« on: June 08, 2007, 11:13:51 AM »
Hi guys,

We're going to take a long weekend trip down to Houston and Austin next month to check them out and see if they are places we'd be interested in living after law school.  In particular, Austin has a good job market for my husband.

Does anyone who's familiar with these places have suggestions for:

1. Particular neighborhoods to check out, either in terms of being interesting as far as character, or good places (well-located but not outrageous) to live?
2. Good parts of the cities to stay in during our trip?

Thanks!

General Off-Topic Board / portable GPS devices
« on: May 02, 2007, 03:13:15 PM »
Hi guys,

We're taking a trip to Ireland this summer, and we can get a GPS with our rental car for a fee.  But what if we just bought one here, so we could have it to use at home, and took it with us on the trip?  I've found one GPS unit that says it comes pre-loaded with maps of the U.S., Canada, and Europe.  If you buy another unit, can you just download the maps to it?

How does this work??

Thanks!

Hi guys,

I read about this over on the Students and Graduates board and thought lots of people (especially women) would be interested in it.  It's a new blog that was just launched by female law students at the T14+Texas and UCLA.

I just wanted to say that I was pleasantly surprised this morning by responses I got to withdrawal emails.  I had withdrawn from a couple schools a couple months ago and didn't hear anything back at all; I just gradually stopped receiving mailings and emails.  This morning I emailed a bunch of other schools (just replying back to email addresses I had received emails from in the past), and I've already received three really nice emails back wishing me luck and thanking me.  I get the impression that most people don't bother to withdraw, and they really appreciate it when people do!

Law School Applications / I HATE DEAN'S CERTS.
« on: February 20, 2007, 09:51:36 AM »
:/

Still not complete at Columbia.  I don't think it's their fault... I think it's my UG's fault... but I'm still annoyed that they can't do like Duke and just require the Dean's Cert if you decide to go there.

So, on 12/23 after getting my LSAT score, I decided to apply to Columbia.  I sent the dean's cert form to my UG that day.  My UG has a system I can log into, where I can see if dean's certs have been sent.  My Cornell and W&L ones went through without a hitch.  But my Columbia one still hadn't been sent four weeks after I mailed it.  So I called them, and they put me on hold and then said, "Oh, your form just arrived in yesterday's mail."  Yeah, right.  You just found it in a pile on your desk.

So, the little online system said that they mailed it to Columbia on 1/24.  Well, yesterday Columbia let me know they still haven't received it. :/  So TWO MONTHS after I sent the form, I'm still at incomplete at Columbia, and who knows when this will be resolved.

At this point,  I'm into other schools I'm very interested in, but it feels like a great big waste of $80 to not get on the phone and harrass my UG. And even more annoying because I got a fee waiver after the fact.

Specifically, I have Michigan's summer start or Duke's joint programs (which start in the summer) in mind.  Is it the case that they do not report the numbers of summer starters to USNWR?  So, you aren't reflected in your rankings?  In that case I'm wondering if that means they have little incentive to offer you a scholarship.

On the other hand, they do want to fill their programs, especially in Duke's case, and they do want to keep your high scores away from their competitors.
