Transferring / UIUC fullride vs. NYU
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:37:57 PM »
Just got into NYU.  Now here are the options:

- Fullride
- top 10%
- law review

- about 85K additional cost
- there is a very small chance to write on to NYU LR

Other considerations
- would like to work in NY, it won't kill me if I work in Chicago first for a few years
- Personally, I think my skill set is a better match for the NYC legal market (being more international and finance related than Chicago) (I speak several languages, with foreign work experience and finance background) (I don't think these experience will be valued as highly in Chicago as in NYC)
- like to keep my options open
- maybe go into teaching if I cannot stand the firm life
- would be nice if I get something published

Current Law Students / Advantage of working for a prestigious firm?
« on: June 19, 2007, 01:19:19 PM »
I am wonder between 2 firms that pays about the same, (let say big NYC firms that pay 160k), but one is more prestigious than the other (although I must admit, my concept of a firm's prestige comes entirely from Vault).  How does the prestige of firm affect your job, not only on the type of deals you will be working on, but also on future career development, let say 10 years down the road.  What about exit options?  Do lawyers at prestigious firm have a significantly easier time getting nice inhouse job or teaching jobs if they don't make partner or don't want to continue in practice?

Transferring / Does process law school transcript?

Should LS transcript be ordered for each school and sent directly to them or to LSAC like undergrad transcript?

Transferring / T30 Fullride versus Columbia/Penn
« on: May 21, 2007, 09:58:57 PM »
I am currently in pretty good position at a top 30 school, fullride and top 10 person in my class.  I think I have a decent shot at great East Coast schools like Penn and Columbia and maybe even Harvard.  Would it be worth giving up my class rank/scholarship/friendship to move to, let say Penn, given that I don't really care where I work and don't want to go into teaching?  Even if I do care, I think I can get a job in most markets with my grades.  What if one is considering alternative career outside of law? Would it make more sense to transfer if one is alternative career or less?

Current Law Students / JD at higher ranked school vs JD/Ms. Finance
« on: April 03, 2007, 01:31:04 PM »
I want a career in investment banking and is currently a 1L at a mid T1 school.  I am thinking about either transferring to a higher ranked school, particular those with outstanding business programs (Penn, NW, etc) (not sure if I want to do MBA though), or I can stay at my school (where I have very comfy scholarship) and get a MS in Finance.

Which deal would be a smarter choice, given that I want a career in investment banking?  Should I transfer to a higher ranked school and try to enroll in their JD/MBA?  Should I just transfer to a higher ranked shcool and get only the JD?  Should I stay here and get JD/Finance?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Job Search / still no job, should I be panicking by now?
« on: January 31, 2007, 02:54:59 PM »
I am top of my class at a high T1.  I sent out some resumes to judges and firms, but still no job.   :-[  Should I be panicking now?  If worst comes to worst, I get no offer when it comes to May, what should I do?  I need to have a plan B.

You know when you select firms from a list and click on the "mail merge" button on NALP it generates a txt file with firm contact info in it.  What I really want included in this list is the email address of the contact person.  Is there anyways possible to get NALP to download the email address?

Choosing the Right Law School / Princeton Review - How reliable?
« on: August 02, 2006, 03:21:40 PM »
How reliable are data on Princeton Review site?  For example, it lists Cardozo's starting salary as 82k, NYLS at 77k, Newark at 67k.  How reliable is this info? Doesn't it seem a bit odd that NYLS, which is a crap school has higher starting salary than Newark, and almost on par with Cardozo?

Choosing the Right Law School / UIUC (fullride) vs. Northwestern
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:56:12 PM »
Hi, I have fullride from UIUC, but recently accepted off the WL by Northwestern.  I have no particular interests in law, meaning I am wiling to do anything anywhere, at this point.  Some interets might develope during school, I don't know.  I am pretty sure I am not into doing pro bono for 40k or teaching, for that matter.  My goal is life comfortable life making decent income.  Please advice, if you are in my situation, which one would you pick and why?
