« on: July 15, 2007, 07:13:46 PM »
Well, everyone is doing it.  I know theres a dedicated board over on the students & graduates section, but thought this section would get more traffic.

I'll be moving into Philly in early August.  I'll prob set up, get settled in, and relax a little before classes start.  Looking forward to meeting some new people.

General Off-Topic Board / Generation Y - Spoiled brats?
« on: May 23, 2007, 03:22:53 PM »
I was talking to an old supervisor about a topic on a NPR radio show we both heard about Generation Y (lets say 18-30 yr) in the workforce and why there is a sort of clash b/w us and the Baby-boomer generation/management/ and for some of us in the future, managing/hiring partners at firms.

He basically thought too many of us felt entitled to immediate movement up the ladder and that we had grown up in priviledged lives where everyone was a winner.  Thoughts?  Are we just a bunch of spoiled brats that don't know how to put in a hard days work anymore?  Or are these baby-boomer dinosaurs stuck in a wrong set of mind with an obsolete paradigm of "sucess = working over 60+ hrs/week to make partner and move up at the cost of your personal life"?

General Off-Topic Board / Duke business students caught cheating
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:29:36 AM »
DURHAM, N.C. // In the largest cheating scandal in the history of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, 34 MBA students face serious penalties after university officials determined they collaborated on answers for an exam.
Nine students face expulsion, said Mike Hemmerich, an associate dean at the business school. Fifteen will receive a one-year suspension from the school along with a failing grade in the course. Nine will get a failing grade in the course, and one student received a failing grade for the exam. Four students were found not guilty. All were from the Class of 2008.

Federal privacy laws prevent naming the students, said Hemmerich, who wouldn't disclose what the course was or what the test was about. He said those involved were first-year students taking a required test.

A professor noticed unusual consistencies in the answers of a take-home exam, which students are supposed to do on their own, Hemmerich said. Investigation showed that students were meeting in groups to work on the test.

Students are allowed to use notes and other materials for the exam. Hemmerich said he wasn't sure whether the students gathered all together or in separate groups. The students were found guilty by Fuqua's judicial board after the panel heard 22 separate cases over several weeks.

"Fuqua depends on every member of its community to uphold the code in both spirit and action," Fuqua Dean Douglas T. Breeden said in a written statement. "This is why we require, as a condition for enrollment, that all students acknowledge their personal acceptance of the code."

It seems that business students are always the ones who cheat...or end up getting caught cheating.

Ive been starting to consider asking Temple and possibly other schools.  Recently, my mother's health has taken a turn for the worst and due to this, i may have to help her obtain some benefits through SSA (which shoudl be easy considering her condition...but who knows).  I'll also have to help her rearange her living arrangement and get her financial/personal matters in order.  There are some other personal issues as well that have come from this that id rather not get into.

Im begining to question if I would be able to give law school my all next fall.  I know how important 1L year can be, and im worried that due to these factors I would not be able to give it 100%.  Im also worried that if i do ask for a deferal and am granted one, I would lose my scholarship money.  I simply cannot attend law school full price, so no scholarship money is a dealbreaker.  I suppose my question is, if I do get a deferal, do schools generally offer at least the same amount?  Any other insight from anyone who has done this?

As stated in the title, has anyone heard of admissions offices considering this proposition?  Ei. being offered a positionf off of the waitlist if one were to defer for a year?

Anyone hear/been through this?  The school I would like to go to id wait for for one more year if it guarenteed me admission.

So I know UVA is pretty well known for their softball league.  What other schools have good social/athletic leagues that most students participate in?

General Off-Topic Board / Pearls Before Breakfast...
« on: April 08, 2007, 12:55:02 AM »
A street performer plays his fiddle in the DC Metro station.  Except the performer is Joshua Bell and the fiddle is a Stradivarius.  Its too long to post here, so just read the article and watch the videos.

Where should I go next fall? / ASW University of Florida...whos going?
« on: April 03, 2007, 06:10:33 PM »
Im on the fence about whether i want to move to Florida from the east coast so i thought that the only good way to settle it was to visit.  So I bought the ticket and everything but I CANT find ANY halfway decent hotels to stay in besides some really shady looking places.  Good idea to have the ASW on Orange and Blue (every hotel told me they were booked due to this.)  Crap.

So whos going?
