Job Search / Very Important Informational Interview !! Help!
« on: January 24, 2009, 03:43:22 AM »

So I think my husband finally realized that networking is crucial to law students in this economy. Through his job he knows a really prominent lawyer in the area. After telling the lawyer about me and giving him my resume, the attorney was impressed and surprised that I don't have a job yet. He told my husband that he wants to meet with me in February to figure out what I want to do after I graduate. He said he would then introduce me to one of the equity partners of a large firm, and possibly one of the biggest venture capitalists in the region. And he would possibly offer me a job if those efforts failed.

I am feeling seriously intimidated by this, because although I have a great academic background, my work background has been public interest. Also the equity partner he wants to introduce me to belongs to a firm that rejected me for OCI. If if anyone has some informational interview tips or advice I would very grateful. I don't have any other offers right now, so I really do need to hit this out of the park.

Job Search / Bummed out
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:49:37 PM »
I guess this can be flamed b/c it is basically me having a pity party for myself. But here goes. I am near the top 10% of my class at a T4 school and do not have a job yet. I am involved in moot court and the works. I just had a callback interview for a firm a week and a half ago. The interview with all three interviewers went very well. I just got a rejection letter from them, 1 day before Christmas. So I am bummed.

I know it could be worse, and there are certainly lawyers and law students in this economy that are hurting worse than I am, but seriously could they have waited until after Christmas? So yeah, I'm bummed. If anyone else is in the same boat, feel free to vent.

Job Search / Intership Question
« on: December 03, 2008, 02:08:23 PM »
I don't have a post graduate job line up yet. I was just contacted by a county counsel office about an internship for either spring or summer. When I submitted my application I was looking for a postgraduate job, but the person I spoke with has told me that they will not likely be hiring new graduates this year. They would allow me to intern while studying and waiting for my bar results and that "could" lead to a job.

Dilemma - I don't have time to do the internship in the spring. I will be swamped because I am a board member on a few groups and classes. But I am worried that if I take a summer internship, and they decide to start hiring in the spring, I will be screwed. Will it hurt me to do the summer instead of spring internship?

Thoughts, opinions??

Job Search / OCI/Job Search Status Thread
« on: July 29, 2008, 05:04:32 PM »
I thought it may be nice if we could have a thread where people could post their updates on job searches. This would allow people to vent about rejections and celebrate interviews, callbacks etc. in one thread. Does this seem like a good idea.

So for me OCI has just started, should find out in a couple weeks what interviews I might/might not have. I am in the top 10% of my class but I have a public interest work history, so I feel like firms may not want to hire me because of that.

How about everyone else?

Job Search / 2L still looking for a job & frustrated...
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:43:29 AM »

I am a 2L and I did participate in OCI but since I am looking for public interest work my options were limited. I have A 3.54 GPA which places me in top 15%. I have applied to a bunch of jobs, have had people look at my cover letter and resume. What else can I do? I am currently networking with attorneys I know and doing the networking events. Do you think my lack of work experience {Very little work before law school/research assistant as a 1L} is hurting me? I need to hear some inspirational posts about people who found a job in the spring.

Current Law Students / dean's list in law school
« on: July 03, 2007, 01:24:07 PM »

I wondering where on the scale dean's list fits in when applying to jobs. I know it isn't as high as law reviews and other activities...but how does it look to employers? My school puts people in the top 20% on the Dean's list...does this make it less valuable to employers?

Current Law Students / Waiting for grades....
« on: June 05, 2007, 08:31:21 AM »
I figured I'd start a thread on this since I know I am not the only one in purgatory here.

Only one grade so far- C in Legal Writing. I saw that coming, professor disliked my writing but could never tell me specifically what I was doing wrong or how to fix was like groping in the dark.

Anyone else waiting?

I am taking Advocacy this summer as well as doing part-time work as a research assistant for my professor. I am still somewhat fried from exams so this week it has been hard for me to get the gears started again. Any tips for balancing summer class and work? I also want to have much more free time during the summer with my S.O. Is that possible. Any reply would be welcome.  :)

« on: January 04, 2007, 11:47:11 AM »
In criminal law...this was my  hardest test and i actually ran out of time. After the exam I was sure I got a C and was actually feeling slightly suicidal for a day or two afterwards because it just killed me...there was no way i could ever guess I could get this grade after that exam!!! HELL happy!!! I only had two  one semester courses this fall, so now I have to hope that I did well in Torts.
