Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / UCLA vs USC??
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:23:00 PM »
I've already been admitted to USC and I'm anxiously awaiting my UCLA decision.  Assuming I get in to UCLA, how do I decide between the two?

They are strikingly similar in cost (40k instate for UCLA and 45k pre-scholarship/aid for USC) and in ranking (UCLA #15, USC #18).  I plan on living in LA after law school so any edge that either school may have in out of state placement isn't a concern of mine.

One thing that struck me as odd was that 91% of USC students pass the Bar on their first try and only 81% of UCLA students.  Their employment stats are pretty on par with each other as far as I can tell, but I get the feeling that the Trojan network of employers and graduates is stronger, more loyal, and more successful than the Bruin network.  Any experiences being a part of either of theses alumni networks would be greatly appreciated!

I am still waiting on my final financial aid/scholarship package from USC, but I'm thinking that because UCLA is a public school and because I fall directly in their median admission numbers (3.76 /167) and slightly ahead of USC's admission numbers, am inclined to think USC will actually cost less than UCLA.

PLEASE share your thoughts, experiences, and advice!!

I want to practice in Los Angeles but Indiana (#27) has offered me a full ride.  UCLA and USC have always been my dream schools but I'd have to pay pretty close to sticker for each (30k, 45k).  Loyola has a good reputation (#56) and alumni network in LA and has offered me a 75% scholarship (10k).

Let me know what you think and why.

Choosing the Right Law School / Please help me choose where to go!! :D

Hi Guys and Gals,

I really need you help deciding where to go so let me tell you a little bit about myself.  I'm from Los Angeles and I would like come back home to practice but I'm open to the idea of going to school out state for the right opportunity.  I want to work Big Law right out of school, preferably in Los Angeles, San Diego, or San Francisco. I went to Indiana for college and had an incredible experience there.  I love the town, the campus, and the institution already.  Though I know I don't want to practice in the Midwest, I am very enticed  by the idea of graduating debt free (full-ride) from a top 30 school (#27 this year, #23 last year).

  • UCLA and USC have always been my dream schools but I will have to pay pretty close to sticker price if I want to go to either of the best schools in LA.
  • UT has always appealed to be because the city that its in, its academic reputation and experience, and the greater institution of UT that it's apart of.

    • Loyola is arguably the 3rd best school in LA, has a very solid reputation and alumni network in LA, and is at a 75% discount ($10k/year)

I also anticipate I will get into UC Davis and UC Hastings, and possibly University of Virginia,  but I'm not sure what kind of scholarship I can expect from them.

So, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know what you think and tell me WHY.
