I have been looking at the cost of law school and I have read the range of law school debt for an elite law school is typically 100k to 120k. This seems extremely low to me and I'd like to get some feedback from people who know more about the financial aspects of going to law school. Here is my rudimentary analysis of law school costs (not including opportunity costs):
1. cost of tuition is approximately 45k per year --> 135k total for 3 years
2. cost of apartment per year --> about 1,500 (more or less) per month; 54k for 3 years
3. cost of food, and miscellaneous costs --> at least 1000 per month; 36k for 3 years
Grand Total: 225k
Somebody please tell me that this analysis is incorrect. Of course this is assuming no scholarship, which happens to a lot of students. But let's assume a relatively small scholarship of 15-30k and you're still looking at a whopping 200k in debt. How come I keep reading that the total debt is only 100-120k? How much money do you get each summer assuming you intern at a large firm?
I'm only going to apply to these two schools this fall. If I don't get into either, I'll apply to more next fall. If you were admitted to both, which would you choose and why?
Background: I have a fairly low gpa (above 3) from an Ivy in hard majors and a high lsat (175+). I have to be honest, I really want to go to HLS, but my gpa is obviously too low so I'm not even going to bother applying. Does anyone know people who went to UVA/Gtown who transferred to HLS and can provide some stats? At which school do you think it is least difficult to get high grades, UVA or Gtown? I realize it is really difficult to transfer to HLS, but I'm curious anyway.
I know it's premature to ask before you get in, but I think with my background I have a fairly good chance at UVA and Gtown, and I'm just eager to get some input.
