Law School Applications / Seeking HLS Advice
« on: March 17, 2006, 12:49:38 PM »
Sorry for the long post, but I'd definitely love some input.
I applied to Harvard Law back in September, in the hopes that I would get a yea or nay without waiting too long. That's important because my wife is a teacher, and schools do their hiring around now. We currently live in DC, where I've got GULC all lined up and waiting. HLS is my only out of town app, but I really, really would love to go there.
Borderline candidate as I am, the process has continued for quite some time.
We need to set some kind of date by which she can tell her current job, "We haven't heard yet, but I'm definitely staying on next year," and she can tell the Boston schools offering her jobs, "Sorry, but I'm out." We can probably keep everyone waiting through early April, but they're just not going to hold out into May and beyond. Already, her current and prospective schools have indicated that they'll want things sorted out somewhat soon.
The questions, then, are as follows:
(1) By what date would it be safe to assume that it just isn't happening for me at HLS? It would break my heart to let the clock just run out, but it seems like after a certain point, you're just holding out for the waitlist.
(2) Do you think it would make any sense, if push really comes to shove, to plead my case with the HLS office before withdrawing? In a sense, I'd have nothing to lose. I'm just not even sure how one would do that effectively. (And, really, who wouldn't like to call up and say "I need to know right now!"?)
