Job Search / Firms that Don't Give offers to 1L's
« on: September 23, 2008, 05:59:44 PM »
Quick question.  This past summer I worked for a firm that doesn't give offers to 1L's and I never really talked about it with them because I have no desire to return to work there.  However, when you fill out the paper work for some of the big law firms they ask if you received an offer from the firm.  I simply jot down that they don't give offers to 1L's and that is all.

Should I try to talk to somebody about this and explain it to them in person or do you think that it happens with enough frequency that they are familiar that many smaller firms don't give offers to students who clerked for them as 1L's.  Thanks for the help.

Transferring / Berkeley vs. Columbia
« on: July 01, 2008, 11:40:33 AM »
Hey guys last week I was accepted to Berkeley and am going to need to make a decision on that very soon.  I have also already been accepted to Georgetown, however, I think I would prefer to go to Berkeley.  I applied to various other schools but the only ones that I am considering over Berkeley are Harvard, Stanford, or Columbia.  Don't really think I have much of a chance at HS but do think have a pretty good chance at Columbia.

My main question is does anybody think that in the long term there are really any distinct advantages to attending Columbia over Berkeley.  I am not really worried about short term job opportunities as I already have my dream job lined up in New York and Texas for next summer.

I've discussed this with several attoneys and they seem to say that it doesn't really matter what school you go to when you attend such a top school.  They pretty much said just go to whereever you will enjoy yourself the most.  Wondering if anybody else out there has had to make this decision and discussed it with somebody knowledgeable on the subject.

And if it makes any difference my interest is in corporate transactional work.

Thanks for the replies and any insight you could provide.

Choosing the Right Law School / Berkeley???
« on: June 27, 2008, 03:27:14 PM »
Hey guys.  I was just admitted to UC Berkeley and am having a little bit of a tough time deciding whether I should accept or not.  I was admitted as a transfer student and the only thing holding me back is that I have a strong interest in international corporate work.  When I think Berkeley public service and environmental law are what come to mind.  Is there a current student or somebody very familiar with the program who could elaborate on the strength of their corporate program?

The only other thing that is really holding me up is that they make you decide within 48 hours of receiving the packet of information.  That probably means I have to make a decision prior to hearing from my top picks, Columbia, Harvard, or Stanford.

Thanks for all the help.

Transferring / Housing at Columbia

Hey guys I was wondering if there were any people out there who
transferred to Columbia last year and might know the situation
regarding oncampus housing. Is there still on campus housing left
for transfer students or are you pretty much on your own? Thanks.

Job Search / Interview
« on: February 14, 2008, 05:53:30 PM »
Hey I just got a call today from a firm that I applied to as a 1L.  They told me that they are not hiring 1L's this year but would like me to come in to interview for a summer associate position in summer 2009.  I have an interview scheduled at their office all day in March.  I was curious if this is very common and if anybody else has had a similar experience?  Thanks in advance for the help.
