San Diego / To Have a Car or Not

Hi folks,
I'm moving to SD from out of town. Does anyone know how convenient it is not to have a car? Are most people going to bring theirs or buy one?
I found an apartment not too far from the trolley but I'm not sure how convenient it'll be getting to school, dragging books etc., or even if the public transportation system is reliable.
Those that will have cars how are you budgeting for gas, insurance and parking. Anyone willing to share what their range looks like?
It would suck not being able to venture far from my apartment but I will be saving some money without a car.
Is it worth not having a car in SD?
