Current Law Students / Student Loan Cosolidation Questions
« on: March 25, 2008, 11:44:36 AM »
I'm looking to learn more about consolidating my student loans.  Does anyone have any good websites to learn more about the process?

Job Search / Writing Sample length
« on: March 18, 2008, 06:24:52 PM »
I know the conventional wisdom is to use an approximately ten page writing sample.  I'm looking at a position in which I have a writing sample that is directly on point but is 17 pages double-spaced.  There is not really a sensible way to cut out any of the piece.

Should I (1) cut out some of the sample in a way that may not be desirable (2) convert it to single-spaced or (3) send it at 17 pages and they will just stop reading when they are finished?

Is this ten page rule a hard and fast one?

Bar Exam Preparation / Working during Bar Study

What's the typical way to do this?  Is it a bad idea to work during bar study?  What do most people do?

Job Search / Out of my League to handle
« on: March 04, 2008, 02:12:48 PM »
I am a 3L at a 40s T1 school.  I started at a T4, top 15%, transferred.  Now outside top 1/3 of class, but 2 book awards (my grades have been all over). No moot court, no law review or journal.  I'd say I have above average work experience (I've won actual hearings under law student practice rules).

Anyway, through a really solid, very well connected family friend, I have an interview with a Vault 100 firm.  I realize that they are meeting with me as a favor to him and that it might be a jerk off meeting, but is there any way I can convince them that I can do the job.

Anyone else get an offer this way?  Advice welcome.

Job Search / Trial level judicial clerkships
« on: February 19, 2008, 11:27:52 AM »
I'm interested in getting a trial court clerkship for a term after graduation.  I've contacted the courts I'm interested in and they say the process is very informal, and done on a judge by judge basis with no centralized application method.

My question is, does it look bad to just fire off letters and resumes to every judge on the Court?  Obviously, I will tailor the letters but it seems like a bad way to convey interest.

Any suggestions?

Job Search / Bar membership and jobs
« on: February 06, 2008, 02:12:35 PM »
I'm a 3L graduating in May and I'm primarily looking for a job in the DA's office or Public Defender.

I'm finding it virtually impossible to get so much as an interview as almost everyone is saying they don't look at recent grads until they pass the bar.  I understand their concern, but I can't just not work from May to September.

Is anyone else encountering similar frustrations?

Of course.  If you are sure about Phoenix, then both of those schools would give you much better networking advantages.

Bar Exam Preparation / taking two preps; waste of time?
« on: January 22, 2008, 11:22:11 AM »
I am already taking Barbri in order to prep for the bar exam.  Would it be a superfluous waste of time and money to also take Kaplan 3-day or six-day MBE course?

If not, what would you advise about the possibility of taking the Kaplan PMBR in February, taking Barbri in May-Jul and the July Bar exam?

Current Law Students / Graduating 3Ls

How padded is your schedule to ensure the least amount of work possible during your final law school semester?

Mine is downright silly.  12 credits/4 courses total, taught by the easiest professors, 2 pass/fail classes, only 2 exams.

Current Law Students / Audio study aids
« on: November 19, 2007, 06:39:05 AM »
I'm going to be driving quite a few miles over Thanksgiving and was thinking of buying an audio study CD (for Bankruptcy course).  Any recommendations on which one?  Sum and Substance, Law School Legends, etc?
