Wait List / Re: How risky is it to send a letter describing why you're a good fit?« on: June 01, 2005, 02:21:37 AM »
I think it's an excellent idea, as long as it's not wordy or anxious-sounding. Put yourself in the positionof someone working in an admissions office. The most exciting part of your day is deciding what to eat for lunch. You get letters like the one you're about to send all the time, and, in your opinion, once you've read one you've read em all. That basically means that if anything gets read, it's the first line of your letter, so whatever you want to communicate, put it in that line. Then, if you want to elaborate, be incredibly concise. I sent Penn a bullet-pointed list and got off the WL there. Same w/ GULC.
Also, what you think are your strengths my not be what they think are your strengths, so put yourself in their shoes: what quotas are they likely looking to fill? Do they need more gay students? ex-cops? sons-of-peanut farmers? 5

It wasn't until I was on an airplane on my way to Colorado with a layover in St. Louis that the thought crossed my mind. Actually, I mentioned to someone that I had been accepted and everyone in the vicinity started ranting and raving about how great the school and area is. Linquest which school are you referring to that you finally decided on? You know what school I think you should go to... 7

Yeah, it was pure flamebait, but we all read into it and found a legitimate question, until Al just kept getting worse and worse. Whether it was flamebait or not, I think the OP mirrors the sentiment of ALOT of posters on this board and especially on xoxo. The problem with my posts however is that I don't have enough patience to read all the way through a thread b/f I reply to the original topic. Oops. Can't wait for LS, when we're all face to face, wired on coffee, and argumentative by nature! 10

I know someone who scored 175 on the LSAT and had a high GPA from UC Berkeley who went to New College in SF (not even accredited by the ABA). They have a tenants' rights program. Now he is the executive director of a nonprofit org that deals w/ tenants' rights. He's making a good living doing something he feels very strongly about, and he can sleep well at night, something I think is both admirable and enviable.
The thing is, people have different objectives in getting law degrees. The prestige obsessed have watched alot of Law & Order and Ally McBeal type TV shows and have a particular vision of what being a lawyer is all about. Others have a specific career (or other type of) goal in mind that is met by a lower tiered law school. What's really interesting, I think, is this overwhelming indignance that comes across on these discussion boards from 0Ls that are going to T25 schools. Like, why do you even give a sh*t where other people are going to school? If you got into a T14 and thats where you wanted to go, then super! congrats. Now shut the f*ck up. Other people are meeting their own career goals and thats fantastic too. |
