Houston / Re: Got My 1L Schedule!

General info:

I went to HPD for fingerprinting today.  You go to the 10th floor of the building located on the corner of Dallas & Travis.  Be sure to bring cash.  The fee is $10, and they ONLY accept cash.

I also went to campus, got my pic taken for the Cougar 1 card, purchased MS Office, and bought books.  The bookswap only had Section A's book for Civ Pro; however, they were all VERY USED (i.e., lots of highlighting and pen marks).  I did not purchase any text books, but I did get the Civ Pro E&E study guide for $10.  I then went to the bookstore in trailers behind the law center. They have very few used books, and they're only $10-$20 cheaper than the new ones.  They only have new books for LARC- a total of five books priced at 55.50, 31.30, 28.00, 28.95, and 52.00.  They do not have Crump's books for Civ Pro nor do they have Zamora's book for K's; however, they said they would have them by the end of the week.  They had Torts, I bought the new $89.  So, I still need 3 books (2 for CP and 1 for K), and my total including a black's law dictionary was $414.85.

Man, it's been an expensive day!

Traci,

Thanks for the info on the fingerprinting. I'm going to try to take care of that this week. Would you mind sending he fingerprint info to our email group? I know some folks aren't on LSD anymore. . .

All y'all, the evite for my O-Week BBQ party has been sent out. Check your email and let me know if you didn't get yours.

Actually guys, the UH police dept will fingerprint your for FREE.  Don't need an appointment on anything.  You can do it at anytime.

Also, I didn't get an email invite :(

One of the Girls on the Admitted Student Discussion Board is hosting a mixer on Saturday, August 6th at 6:30pm in Midtown. I think I'm going. Anyone else?

Yea, I'd be interested in going.  Can we bring along significant others?  Where's it going to be held at?

Thx!

Whoa! How do you get to enrollment online? I wanna know what section I'm in!

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. I'm in Section B. . . I have Sanders for Torts, Mixon for Contracts, Ragazzo for Procedure and TBA for LARC. Mixon doesn't allow computers in his classroom. . . great.  :'(

Hey Scurvy,

Looks like we're in the same section, cuz I'm showing we have the same profs, but how do you know if that's A or B?  My enrollment services online schedule just lists sections, but doesn't indicate anything about A or B.

I have to admit, the schedule is pretty good.  Mondays are long, but Thurs & Fri end before noon!  No complaints about that.

Also, where are you seeing that Mixon doesn't allow computers?  I have notes 44 & 48 next to his name, but neither reference anything about disallowing computers in them

Hey guys, looks like I'm in section B as well. CD, the sections are listed on the UH Law website under the fall 2005 schedule. Here's the link: http://www.law.uh.edu/schedule/fall/fall.asp

Hello,

Thanks for the info!  Are y'all gonna attempt to buy the text books now, or wait until orientation?

My laptop came in over the weekend. I'm just now getting into it.  I've always used a desktop, so I'm trying to get used to the keypad instead of an external mouse.  I think I'm gonna go to Best Buy (or some tech-type similar store) and buy an external wireless mouse.

I have a question: Everything on the screen is really small.  Could be b/c I'm used to looking 21+in monitors, but isn't there a way I can make things look larger on my laptop monitor? Advice is appreciated.

Hi,

You can try three things:

1.  Go to Start, Control Panels, Display, Appearance tab - you can change just the font size here; NO reboot req'd

2.  Go to Start, Control Panels, Display, Settings tab, Advanced button, General tab, change DPI settings; you WILL have to reboot if you do this

3.  On whatever screen you're on, click anywhere on the screen, hold down your keyboard CTRL key, and then use your mouse wheel to either incr or decr;  this is, obviously, just a temporary 'quick fix'

On a totally unrelated topic, I'm sorry I missed the BBQ.  I wuz out of town and didn't even think to check my LSD email.  Oh well.  There's always .50c chicken legs at Buffalo Wild Wings if anyone is ever interested  ;D

So its a month before LS, which E&E books should I get and read before the first day of classes? What author? Which subjects? etc...

Hi,

According to Law School Confidential (2004 edition; pg 114-115), it recommends E&E for Civil Procedure and for Torts.

Hope this helps.

I have purchased my computer and am using ZoneAlarm for Firewall, and SBCYahoo (I use SBC DSL)offered software for spyware and anti-virus. It seems to have worked well so far.

So you're using two anti-virus programs:  the McAfee (which came w/ the Dell) and the SBC one?

Wow! I just completed my order for the Dell laptop.  Man-oh-man my total was $2027.71.  Goodness gracious, that's a lot of money!  So...I did it.  It had to be done, and I did it. I just wish it would've been free :)

Traci
you must have upgraded from the UHLC base model.  I stuck with the base model.  I hope it gets me through...

Hola all,

I got my Dell in last Friday evening.  I had ordered it the previous Sunday night, so I got it in less than a week.

Hitting $2,000 wasn't too difficult.  Upgrading to the 80GB harddrive and the 1DIMMS in order to add the additional memory without having to buy replacement memory brings you to about $1,800.  Tax and shipping are about $200.  The only other extra I splurged on was the 90W adapter.  It'll help recharge your laptop batter a little faster when you plug it in.

One note:  During the initial Windows XP setup (only thing I had done was taken the computer out of the box and turned it on), I received an error message about one of the drivers installed on my machine relating to something called the "Determinitic Model Miniport".  The warning message stated that this program wasn't Windows Logo verfied, so it might cause conflict w/ my operating system.

It ultimately turned out that that particular issue relates to modem operations (which is no big deal unless you use dial up, which I haven't used in about 5 years).  Technical support was able to help me out, but good God Almightly, it took hours (at least 3) before I was finally connected to the right department to help me out.  They had trouble locating my 3 year warranty that I purchased thru UH's Dell link, so initially they wouldn't help me at all.  I had to raise a bit of hell before I they were able to locate it.  Oh well, all's well that ends well.

Still, $2,000 seems a bit steep for this machine.  It is real nice however.  I've been modifying all weekend.  So far so good.

Problems already? Maybe I should order sooner rather than later so I can work out bugs while I still have time. . . :(

EDIT: I just ordered. My total was $2006 with tax and shipping. I did the same upgrade package as CD. I'll be buying my mini wireless mouse separately.

Sounds like you and I got about the same setup.

Eh, the problem was easily resolved once they were FINALLY able to tell me what that program was for.  I pulled the updated driver off the internet right away.

What wireless provider are you going with?  Are you going to use free software off the net for stuff like spyware & firewall or are ya gonna buy from the bookstore at (hopefully) nicely discounted prices?

It comes w/ McAfee viruscan, but no fireware or spyware blockers, at least as far as I can tell.  I'm going w/ Zonealarm, and Adware/Spybot, and Spyware Blaster until I can check w/ the bookstore at UH to see what they're offering.

Yikes, it says it is inactive for security reasons..

I emailed the SBA to ask about this, see below:

The R McAlhany's UH Law Student Site is not associated with the UH Law center or the Student Bar Association. We have no control over its access. I will check on it and see what I can do.

Hello all,

The outline is back up.  I guess annoying them with emails is the way to go!

Is the "R McAlhany's UH Law Student Site" going to be back up and working soon?  Currently, the link takes me to a page that says it has been closed for security reasons.

Thank you,
Traci
