Choosing the Right Law School / Re: NYU vs Columbia..help!
« on: April 03, 2005, 03:13:31 PM »
I had my Columbia visit (i'm visiting NYU in two weeks).  I liked Columbia alot, and I think the prestige of the Hamilton tips the balance in Columbia's favour.  And the apartments are soooo much bigger! (I've been spoiled these last few years, I can't go back to not having a living room...)

thanks for all your input!

Choosing the Right Law School / NYU vs Columbia..help!

In at both, Columbia with full $ for three years, NYU with full $ for first two years and 1/2 for last year if i work 2L summer in private practice, full if I work in public interest.

I'm into IP and Health law
Thoughts?
Differences in student body, competitiveness, placement, etc...
I hear Columbia is more competitive...true?

I'm going to visit both (Columbia/NYU(no $ yet) next week, and Harvard in April).

I've been to both cities briefly, I found NYC to be vibrant and amazing and slightly overwhelmingly 'tall', and Boston to be prettier and chiller.

It looks like the general consensus is to take the money and run!

Am I being unrealistic in my assumption that I can work for a smaller firm with less hours? I was just talking to an NYU prof/ex canadian, who told me that 9 am to 11pm is the norm no matter where you work...

Any thoughts on NYU vs Columbia (who knows, maybe  NYU will pony up a lot of financial aid money, my family is poor.)

see, this is what i like to hear! haha.

I've also never been to Boston. I'm from Montreal, so I expect a lot from a city. Thoughts?

I think you meant over  ;)

I really don't know much about either school, I'm a crazy canuck (brr its cold up here), so I know little about prestige and how much rankings matter and all that crazy stuff. I also know little about the environments of each school, so any info would be helpful (I have a feeling everyone will be putting on their nicest faces during visiting day, so not sure about how much I'm going to learn there.)

I hear Columbia is pretty competitive too?

I'll be visiting Columbia next week, and Harvard in April.

The less debt, the sooner i could move back to Canada (If i wanted..just want the option).  I could pay a large debt from Harvard off quickly if I worked at a big firm, but that's not my style. I want to work at a smaller firm, less hours (no 80 hour work weeks please, i want to see my kids), so I probably won't be making the crazy big bucks.

Does Harvard have an advantage in terms of entering Academia?

I have to choose between Harvard and Columbia with the Hamilton (120k).

I want to be an ip lawyer, or an entertainment lawyer (right now at least, who knows, i may discover a love for tax law).

Pros/Cons

Columbia: Hamilton, low debt load (60k - money saved in 1L and 2L summers)
NYC!

Harvard: Haaaaaaaarvard, LIPP (not dependent on Public interest involvement). Higher debt load (90k minimum).

I guess it boils down to, is the Harvard name worth the extra cash?

it's official, i'm in!
Wow, what a binder!
I honestly have no idea what i'm gonna do. Right now, I'm picking a canadian school, and sending in my deposit, as the deadlines here are early. (April 1st)  Then, I'm going ponder whether I'd like to venture down south, and forfeit my deposit/place in Canada if i do.  I must admit, the (slightly) warmer weather is appealling, Montreal winters are coooold.

I only recently began to consider the US, as you can see from LSN, I applied pretty much on the very last day!
In terms of American schools, I have to pick between Columbia (I was awarded the Hamilton), Harvard and NYU thus far (come on yale! i sent you a freakin' cd of my music!). Any opinions would be welcome, as I don't really know that much about the various American schools. I want to go into IP, but i'm open to finding new loves!

Hello All

I am (hopefully) a new Harvard Admit (there is a 1/2 pound package from Harvard JD Admissions waiting for me from Fed-ex express, and its not the introductory binder cause I already got that!). Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun here. I almost want to leave work and go home to check.

Just wanted to say hello, I'll be posting on this board because I will be full of questions, I'm in Canada and not many people here know about the American legal education system/application/decision process.

whoot whoot haaaaaarvard.

will be attending admit weekend in April if its for real.
