Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Re: American Waitlist Thread

After ALOT of deliberation, I withdrew...just now from the waitlist.  American is just TOO expensive for me to enjoy a good/healthy quality of life...especially when schools of equal international law status have taken me with $$.  Good luck to all..start scrounging up your pennies:)

So, I feel like I owe Penn State an apology from my last post.  I spent the entire weekend in Carlisle at the scholarship dinner and the open house and I am now obsessed with Penn State.  It truly was an incredible weekend. I had the opportunity to talk to a bunch of professors at the dinner and during the open house events they held a panel where they answered alot of questions that...well, eradicated all of my doubts.

I want to go into international law and eventually work for the Feds.  I had engraved in my mind that the only way this was going to def. work was to be in DC.  After this weekend, I came to a realization.  Sure, American University is known for it's international law program, and sure, being in DC would put me in a place where many offers will be available...but bascially...ALL the people at American are interested in international law (ok, obviously not everyone, but a HUGE amount)...I would basically be competing with 100+people for a small pool of jobs available during the summer and afterwards.

Penn State has an impressive list of DC contacts, DC externships, and DC successes basically.  They are also expanding their abroad programs to semester and year abroad (something I'm very interested in...and they are even about to sign a contract with Turkey for one of these abroads, something I'm crazy excited about).  Penn State is so diverse that the students are focusing in a wide array of specializations, meaning, only a small handful would be competing with me for the international related jobs, etc.  Basically...I'd be a big fish in a small pond.

I am now convinced that Penn State will open the doors I need opened. I know that I could excel there and the quality of life I would have would be FAR better than the quality of life I could afford in DC.  Penn State is up and coming, I mean...just look at that new ranking!!!  So, please ignore my last post...and well, I would say that I am now 99.9% that I will be joining Penn State's law school!!

Who is on it?  Who is hanging in there?

Me...surprised as hell I was even waitlisted and not outright rejected with my 158!!

I'm from the area, but I'm working this weekend.  If I wasn't, I would've been happy to take you there. I'm sorry.   :'(

However, you can rent a car and go from there. Carlisle is very close to Harrisburg.

Aww, thanks, it's ok!  Yeha, I looked into renting  car, but as I'm not 25, it comes with a hefty fine.  I could always go cab, but I have a feeling that would run me 50+!

Who is going this weekend?  If you are flying into Harrisburg International, how in the heck are you getting to Carlilse?!  I'm in a bind:-/

I'll be there this weekend!  :o

Are you flying?  If so, are you flying into MDT?  I have NOOOOO idea how I am getting from the airport to Carlisle and back...and I would prefer NOT to spend a ton of money on a cab...*sigh* I wish the school would send a shuttle...

So, the waitlist letter says something along the lines of emailing your admissions consellor with a LOCI (sorry I don't have the letter in front of me)...but I've heard that the correct way is to snail mail?!  Any opinions on that?

So, I just returned from my "view law schools" roadtrip, and Penn State's Carlisle campus was one of my stops, and I fear I may have chosen the wrong location for me.  Perhaps I made the mistake of going to DC and Baltimore first.  By the time I got to Carlisle I was tired of living out of a suitcase, I had fallen in love with the big cities, and it was rainy!  I toured the temp. building which is nice enough, but directly across the street from a massive, dirty truck stop.  I asked my tour guide when she thought the new building would be done, and she thinks it's going to be longer than what they claim.

The town of Carlisle (and note I say town not city) is indeed quaint; however, I don't think I managed to find the hot spots and fun cars all current students told me about.  I did see a large population of sketchy/dirty people though.  It's a really neat historical town, don't get me wrong...but, there's just not much to it, I said, it was rainy and dreary the entire time I was there.

The quality of education seems great.  The class I sat in on was a first year class (Contracts), which def. had the possibility to be very boring, but the professor was great!  He was humorous, open, knew all the students names, etc.  I sat through the whole 2 hour class even though they told me I could leave whenever...I was genuinly into it as were all of the students.

My biggest concern is placement after though.  I want to go into International Law and eventually work for the government (abroad or domestically).  Penn State is extremely regional.  I know I could get a GREAT job after graduation, but in central Pennslyvania...or perhaps I could head back to my home state and still get a great job as a lawyer, but the thing is, I don't want to practice (it would only be a backup for me).  My dream is State Department, DOD, DOJ, etc etc etc, and I have come to the realization that it would be a miracle to land those jobs coming from Penn State.

I'm heading back to Carlisle Friday for the scholarship dinner and open house.  I'm hoping for better weather and more opinions, etc.  Who knows, maybe it will win me over big time this go around.  I'm post afterwards of course:)  Congrats to all accepted...please do not let me opinion thwart your decision, I just realized on this trip that I am a city girl!
