Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / Re: SLU---help!!
« on: October 31, 2008, 05:10:50 PM »
Have you looked into Missouri? If you do well you'll have an opportunity at all those big firms. The only difference is the amount of debt you're going to graduate with. SLU offered me $20K a year, but it still would have cost me like $60K to go there. Missouri offered $8K, but after getting in-state tuition it will be much cheaper. Also, with Missouri you'll have the option of Springfield/Kansas City if you don't end up liking STL.

my .02 cents

I didn't go to the open house, I really don't think you'll miss much.

I just did a tour with Michael Heck. She's great and will be able to provide just as much information as you'd get elsewhere. Also, depending on when you're coming, you might want to try to sit in on a class.

Like I said, if you have any questions let me know. PM would probably be best since I don't check this board often.

I attend Mizzou, if you have any questions after the open house, let me know.

Just google "cheap textbooks" and you'll get several sites. I searched them all because they have different prices.

This year I only found it worth the cheaper price to get 2 books online. However, I saved about $100 doing it that way. Last semester I got a brand new crim law book for like $25 vs. the 100 something they were selling it in the bookstore.

It only takes a few minutes to look online... so why wouldn't you?

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Windows Vista - opinions

I've had vista for about a year. The best part about it is the ability to increase battery life. My HP gets 6 + hours on extended life battery.

The ONLY problem that I've had with Vista in Law School is that it takes about 2 minutes to get through the security check on Exam 4. My old XP computer only took about 30 seconds, and my friend's mac takes about 5.

Not a big deal really though

I think it's going to be different for each firm. Some firms might see that you don't meet the "preferred" qualifications and just toss your resume. However, others might go ahead and take a look at your cover letter and throw you a bone.

For me, even though they didn't request one... I included a cover letter for all my OCI request. I am right at the top 38% of my class no journal....

I was denied for interviews at firms that preferred: Top 30&, Top 25% (2), Top 20%

I have interviews for firms that preffered the following: Top 33% (2), Top 30 %, Top 25%

That's all that I've heard back from so far... so basically, it doesn't take that long to apply... so do it, you might get lucky!

General Board / Re: Memo trouble!

I really don't think you should be using your memo for OCIs... you're trying to stand out... how will you do that handing them something about the same topic as everyone else!

Did you try to write on to Law Review or have any legal experience this summer? I'd use one of those if you did.

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: commercial outlines - WHICH ONE?!
« on: August 06, 2008, 03:24:58 PM »
I typically wait until I get the course outline and then see which spends the most time on the topics we will cover in that class. However, I prefer Emanuel.

I strongly suggest using the outlines. It helps with the format and provides clear info on topics that you might be having problems with. However, they are meant to be a supplement to your own outlines, not a replacement!

I'm sure they don't care, the only reason I use them is because it saves a ton of time not having to write everything out.
