Law School Admissions / Re: The economy and law school applications...
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:31:25 PM »
I don't believe it will. A recent New York Times article said law school applications have decreased significantly (a minimum of 5% per year for the last two years). Although I am unsure whether only the most competitive of students remain, it does narrow the applicant pool.

Law School Admissions / Why Cornell?
« on: January 14, 2008, 09:42:26 AM »
I am a little unsure of how to approach Cornell's question, "Why Cornell?" None of my family members are alumni, and I can't really think of a compelling reason why I would choose Cornell over NYU should I get accepted to both. Any advice?

Personal Statements, Resumes, and Letters of Recommendation / Re: DS vs. PS

Hey, you and I have similar questions on the personal statement and diversity statement. And like you, I am also slaving to get these things done in time for Jan 2. Do you have AIM or AOL? If so, my sn is aminp04.

How did everyone approach their diversity statement? I am unsure whether I should use anecdotes to explain my diversity or if I should go with a plain vanilla "this is my life." I'd like to include that I am Indian American and the disadvantage of growing up as the only child of 2 immigrant parents who did not go to school here. In addition, I want to talk about the small rural town I grew up in, which further limited my opportunities. What does everyone think? I want to avoid writing a diversity statement that is a bore to read. Any advice? Thanks.

Hey Candiz, I am an Asian minority as well- Indian to be specific. I think it is advantageous to write the diversity statement because it does give you an edge over someone who doesn't write one. The worst that could happen is it is not convincing and even then I don't think you'd get negative points for it. I am working on mine right now, and I am deciding exactly how I want to approach it. I am Asian and grew up in a small rural town, which gives me somewhat more diversity than the average law school applicant. But I definitely think it would help to have one regardless. Hope this helps.

Hey mine's not completed enough to send it out, but if you want I can edit yours for you, if you'll edit mine when it is finished.
