has anyone figured out yet how the whole buying a computer thing works with your student budget...? somebody said something about them deducting it from your student contribution? does this mean you get that much more aid?

i am currently abroad too and trying to figure everything out from here. not going to be back in the country until the 28th..but it's worth it

PSA: If you're going to buy a computer and want to take advantage of HLS' so-generous contribution reduction (http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/sfs/basics/pamphlet.php#debt),
DON'T BUY YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL AFTER JULY 1! They don't tell you this online or anything, but only computers bought after the end of June are eligible.

(Yes, I just bought mine last week when the financial aid office wasn't replying to my emails. They got back to me today with the above information -- *grumble, grumble*)

But on this page
http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/sfs/billing/computer.php
it says:

Quote
Any computer purchased prior to June 15th of the summer before you enter HLS or after April 2nd of the year you graduate cannot be considered an "education-related" expense. Therefore, we cannot help you finance its purchase.

 ??? ??? ???

Yeah, I caught that too. I think the difference is that the page you linked is for computer loans, and the program I inquired about is for reducing the student contribution. There's a link from the page I linked to that would seem like it would have the details on this program (and the consumer debt payoff program), but it leads to a 404 error.

The woman who emailed me today did indicate that the list of covered accessories (monitor, etc.) on the page you linked applies to the reduction program, too.

What is the deal with this? Does this mean that the computer I buy this summer will count but the student debt that I payed off in April will not?

Also since they take this amount away from your student contribution, does that mean that they give you more grants in exchange?

Yeah, I mean that's what I interpreted it to mean. That's what I hope will happen. My personal case is now being discussed by the financial aid committee, so we'll see what happens.
Yes, please update when you know what the deal is. :)

Two questions:
1. Anyone know what our first semester courses will be?
2. I was looking at the budget and they alloted about a grand for books...seemed like an underestimate to me...anyone know how much books will cost for the yr including extra stuff like study aids?

1. It depends on your section.  Not all 1Ls take the same courses at the same time.  Everyone will take CivPro and LRW.  Then you'll take two of (Property|Contracts|Crim|Torts) with the other two in the Spring.
2. 1000 seems like an overestimate to me.  You won't pay that much.
Also we have the two new classes in international law and legislation to throw into the mix.

Basketball, psh.  But if anyone is a Yankees fan, or at least not a Red Sox fan, I will be your friend...

In other, and, much more exciting news, I am a proud Cambridge lessee!  Two blocks away, baby.
Congrats Saja! Sounds like a great find!

Now that you have signed a lease, are you ready to change your sig?

Guess who is getting on campus housing?!

I emailed the housing director today and he said that 38 spots are available...just thought this would be helpful if other people stayed on the waitlist...even if your number is higher than 38 you have a chance because not everyone is going to accept their housing. YAY!

Now to apply for loans...ugh

Is there anything else that people are doing to prep for the school year? I can't really think of anything...but I am getting really excited/nervous/anxious

I retook and only scored three points higher but I am pretty sure they took the higher score bc I don't think I would have had a shot with anything less than a 172. (169,172, 3.89lsdas 3.99ugpa non-URM)

Also, Harvard 'guaranteed' housing in dorms, but then retracted that guarantee. Not the same, obviously, but still :P

How in heaven's name do you "retract" a guarantee??  I'd be pissed off about that, but I didn't really care for the dorms to begin with.

They can't use one of their dorms so they changed their policy...of course without giving any incoming JDs notice of the change before they made their deposits...yes I am still bitter about it...next week I find out if I get housing or not :P

you are taking this WAY too personally...law school admissions is not a popularity contest...I agree that you should not let pride stand in the way of your future
