Pursuing an LLM / LLM in London after BA?
« on: November 26, 2006, 06:49:48 PM »
I have an American BA under my belt and will have 2 years of Professional Experience in Immigration Law by the time I enter graduate school.  I am currently applying to JD programs as well as this one LLM program at The School of Oriental and African Studies in London.   This program attracts me because its One Year and its focus is on the developing world.  With this in mind, if I am accepted to this One Year LLM for 2007-08, I will defer my JD for until Fall 2008.  Do you think this is a wise option as I do hope to teach law one day as well as practice law abroad.

here is the school's site:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

What about Pace though? Because that is where I am leaning towards

yeah the money is quite tempting with Albany...its such a tough Albany is much cheaper to live in than White Plains...I know the school is on the rise with bar passage rates and employment rates plus they have a good faculty to student ratio...somebody help me decide!

Yes Pace and Hofstra have decent NYC firm on-campus recruitment but of course the US News rankings has them lower than Buffalo.  I just can't picture myself braving those winters though...

Hollowman:  any thoughts on my law school options?

Cool...thanks for the insight...definitely appreciate it.  I was also leaning towards Pace at this point.  I have been most impressed by that school so far.  The only thing I'm worried about is that it is still a relatively younger institution (1976) which results in a smaller alumni network.  But I definitely did like their mock class by Prof. Doenboerg on Constitutional Law and their international law program seems great.

The Hofstra Admitted Open House is this Sunday.  I have been to an Info Session before - wasn't so impressed.  Although the Hofstra name is more known than Pace.  Do you think I should consider it and check out the Open House?

Thanks, so run away from Syracuse?  does that come from personal experience?  More known name, more expensive, but not as good right?

Choosing the Right Law School / Should I consider Syracuse or Buffalo?

I've narrowed my choices down to Pace, Albany, or Hofstra.  Should I consider Syracuse or Buffalo if I want to live/work in the NYC area?  Or for any other reasons?  Here is my LSN:

Buffalo is interesting because it is ranked higher than these other schools in terms of USN&WR rankings, as flawed as they might be.  It is also so affordable given the fact that I am a NY resident.  But I guess it just comes down to its regional focus in the upstate NY, Buffalo area which I know is not the only possibility for alumni but in the beginning it might be more difficult to practice closer to NY City, NJ area.  Also, the weather there is definitely not a plus for me even though I know law school is mostly spent in the library anyway.  I don't know, what do you think about Buffalo and my thoughts about it?

Villefort: yes I do want to practice in the North East...Closer to the tri-state area but I would definitely not mind philly or DC even.  Pace just gave me a good impression but I guess I will have to check out the other schools on my list as well.
