Transferring / Re: NYU vs. top 20 school full ride

I am now considering similar move, although my school is not in top 20.

Transferring / UIUC fullride vs. NYU
« on: August 07, 2007, 02:37:57 PM »
Just got into NYU.  Now here are the options:

UIUC
- Fullride
- top 10%
- law review

NYU
- about 85K additional cost
- there is a very small chance to write on to NYU LR

Other considerations
- would like to work in NY, it won't kill me if I work in Chicago first for a few years
- Personally, I think my skill set is a better match for the NYC legal market (being more international and finance related than Chicago) (I speak several languages, with foreign work experience and finance background) (I don't think these experience will be valued as highly in Chicago as in NYC)
- like to keep my options open
- maybe go into teaching if I cannot stand the firm life
- would be nice if I get something published

If you have 100k laying around to donate, why do you need to go to law school?

100K? most people pay more than 100k just to get their JDs

Transferring / Re: T25 or NU?

UIUC places well in Chicago, if you can improve a little bit, save the money and stay in Urbana, after a few years doing BIGLAW chicago, you can lateral to a firm in Cali, or even easier, a branch of the same firm!  SAVE THE $$$!!!

This is true, but the OP is just above the top 1/3, which will put most biglaws out of his reach.

The issue here, I think, is not whether NYU will put you in better position in NYC.  The OP will almost certainly get better job from NYU than coming from his Top 25 school, even with his rank and LR.  The issue is whether that enhancement in career opportunity is worth the additional money.  Prestigious NYC firms might recruit out of your T25 school, but they certainly are not prepared to hire as many T25 students as NYU students.

Depends. Can the Fourth Amendment be applied to non-government bodies?

Good question.  It is almost like asking: "Can I claim the 10th amendment immunity in court?  Can the federal government abrogate my immunity pursuant to 14th amendment?"

If I personally owned a company, I'd be right pissed if I couldn't, however stupid it may be to do so, have whatever checks I darn well wanted to have run, run. If the prospective employee doesn't like it, there is a sidewalk outside that runs to other businesses that they are free to try out.

I thought the existence of civil rights status has long been a common knowledge, am I wrong?

I don't know what kind of dumbass goes to tier 3 schools, but, you have a GREAT shot at G'town.  I know someone from tier 4 school that transfered there.  She was #2 at her FTT.

Are you the same person as KrazyNazi?  Why are you using my name?

The only things that matter are:
1) Rank of your school
2) Your rank within your class
3) Law Review/publication
Nothing else matters.  Secondary journals are basically for dumbass who cannot make LR, employers know that.  Moot court is, guess what, moot.

I am not a big fan of the Yale student, but this sounds about right.

It is shocking that the OP's failure to get on law review would spark such fiery exchange.   ;D
