I would do it. You just can't go wrong with a degree from HLS. It can take you anywhere. Almost.

Law School Applications / Re: Boalt - "Passed initial review"

BUMP

What's up with Boalt?I have no shot there, but why haven't they rejected me yet?! Just get it over with, please. I am ready for the cycle to end!

Any news out there?

I never got a letter, but called last week to get the (bad) news..  They told me a letter was generated and sent to my address, but I haven't received anything.

Well, then maybe mine is on its way.

Call them. The number is 510-642-2274. I just did and was told that "decision has been mailed." I then asked if it was possible to find out what the decision was on phone; the lady said "Sure... unfortunately, we were not able to offer you admission."

Aah... no real surprise here, of course, but I was sort of hoping that I did have a shot because of Boalt's legendary emphasis on GPA. Chiashu gave me 30%, I think.

Also, from my experience, in business (MBA) rankings are quite important... but not necessarily the US News rankings. There are a few other well respected rankings in that subject area, published by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

It is generally considered that (at least for the U.S.) it is "good" to attend one of the Top 20 schools. In my humble opinion, though, it should be more like top 30 - I'm just basing this on knowing some people from schools in the lower 20's...

Med school- my friend is applying and he's very aware of them and says they're used like a bible.

Completely untrue, and I know 5 (that I can think of) med. students who go to different medschools. None of them ever cared about the rankings. They were just happy to get in and start getting good grades. In medicine, it isn't nearly as important where you went to school. The wages and employment prospects aren't that much different.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Ohio State? Case Western?

-social life is nil, absolutely NIL. don't expect much in the way of satisfying student activities. social life revolves around video games and alcoholism.

Not true. Social life in Cleveland isn't bad. The nightlife in downtown actually isn't too bad - of course, it is no Miami, but better than many places. And, of course, your social life is what you make of it... Cleveland is a big enough town and I can't imagining to being able to find friends and/or something to do there.

I do agree, though, that the city itself is pretty grim, especially the area where Case is located... and so are most of the adjacent areas (mostly a black ghetto). The roads are absolutely terrible, too... without a doubt some of the worst I have seen in this country.

However- Cleveland recently got a new mayor and the guy is putting a lot of effort into trying to turn the city around. I'm sure he will make things better at least to some extent...

Out at Boalt. No real surprise there.

What the heck, with an index of 248.6, I'd be surprised if I were rejected. But then again, if I was accepted to a bunch of other good schools (as you were), I wouldn't be too upset :)

I have read the book, though, so it's ok :)

Now back to the topic - I am now officially the person with the highest index number on LSN to be rejected by the elite law school of IU Bloomington. It wasn't about the numbers, obviously. They wanted to interview me in person (phone wasn't good enough) because they were "concerned" about my horrific record of traffic violations (speeding, shortcutting, and the like ;D ) and a whopping dismissed(!) minor misdemeanor case from the college times. I thought the request was at best idiotic, and declined to come. Frankly, I wasn't that much interested in them anyway (didn't like the school when I visited it in the fall).

The funny thing is, when I applied, they assured me that in no way would my record affect their decision making process. They said "it was just for the bar." Yeah right. Didn't believe them to begin with... but now I know for a fact they are liars, too.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Professors Calling

Yes, it was UF. Have you heard any scholarship information from them yet?
I have received a bunch of information from them but no news yet of any scholarship money.

No scholarship info. From LSN, it looks like they are hardly giving out anything... maybe a little to URM's. And then they keep calling and "reminding" you what a great achievement it is to be accepted into their school. Come on now, UF, you can do better than that!

That is unfortunate because if it weren't for the cost, UF could have been right near top of my list... it would have been a much easier decision if I was a Floridian. At 9K a year, this is a good deal. But at 27K (or smth. like that), even if it's just for the 1st year... umm...

What makes you think that?

The fact that they have called me 4(!) times already. I actually only spoke with them once, other times they left voice mails. I didn't remember the names of the profs calling but I'm sure there were at least 2 different people calling.

What's up with that, seriously? Did they call anyone else multiple times? If they want someone so badly, heck, they know the trick... those green presidents have all the power.
