Interesting. I assume you're making little or no money through this; is that a big problem for you, or how have you managed it?

I'm curious what sorts of experiences folks are having/have had in their 1L summer jobs, particularly if you worked in PI/government (DA/US Attorney's offices, Judges' chambers, etc.) What sorts of responsibilities were you given in those offices, and what was your day-to-day life like?
I'm excited about having the choice of Thinkpads rather than Dell but they don't appear to be customizable at all -- am I missing something? Also they come with Vista while the Dells have XP.
The Dells default to XP on the customization window, but you can get them with Vista. I think we should too (or at least that's what they told me when I stopped by the IT department a few weeks ago).
UVA vs. NU was pretty much what I had narrowed it down to when I applied last year. It was a difficult decision, and I chose NU in the end. I had a couple of big reasons for picking it, but aside from those it sounds like NU might work better for you.
My main reasons for picking NU were a significantly larger grant and the fact that my SO lives in Chicago. Along with that, though, I was ready for a change in setting, as I went to a small public school similar to UVA in a lot of ways, and the idea of living in a busy, vibrant city like Chicago was very appealing. While I was impressed with UVA from a short visit I made there and from what many of my friends who went there told me, I was blown away by the friendliness of students at NU and the obvious collegiality there.
The weather is definitely a factor, but if you can see yourself dealing with extreme cold for a few months out of each of the next 3 years, I wouldn't base my decision on it at all. Plus, Chicago gets beautiful once mid-March rolls around, and it stays very warm all spring and summer. And in terms of placement, NU grads place very well pretty much everywhere in the country. Many end up in Chicago because (a) the school is trusted by hiring partners there, and (b) the students fall in love with the city.
Anyhow, that's my take. Good luck!
Just the other day, I got a letter and receipt confirming my deposit from the Admissions Office. So for anyone with a deposit in, you can prob look forward to that.
Re: laptops, I got the same response from the IT department as mentioned earlier in the thread. I'm really hoping they'll release them by early June...I'm starting to lose my mind without my own computer.
Also, it was in the thread earlier but I figured I'd bump it up...join the Facebook group! Here's the link:
bump - I know they aren't that many of use but I don't like to see us slipping off the top page. Would anyone have any interest in a facebook group???
Definitely - though I'm still waiting on my NetID so I can join the Northwestern network. If you do (or anyone else does) create a Facebook group, definitely post the link on here!
mufich - I might have to take you up on that offer - 24/The Office are all I watch outside of [adult swim].
I've heard it's best to try to square things away in mid- to late-June if possible, especially if you're planning on living in Gold Coast/Streeterville since those areas are a little more competitive. If you're living somewhere else, though, you might be OK.
Really? I called the office to make sure they got my deposit, and I haven't received a Net ID/CAESER email.
Not really...though I'm dying for the new notebook models to come out. My computer broke a couple of months ago and I've been eeking by using my friends so that I could buy one this summer and have Vista + a warranty through our graduation date. It's intolerable.
