Actually, I think Chicago does something similar.

Wait List / Re: Michigan waitlist« on: July 19, 2006, 04:06:22 PM »I got this email this morning. Anyone want to take a guess what my chances are. Anyone have any idea how many people remain on the waitlist or how many people need to withdraw from Michigan before they dip into the wl Agreed to all. I also think that if you DO hang in there literally to the bitter end--which would certainly be stressful and a huge pain in the a$$--the chances of it paying of are good. As few people as there are left on the waitlist now, it's quite probable that by registration day there would be literally only 2 or 3 people left, and so any spot that did open up would go to one of only a few people. And, given the ridiculous number of waitlist admits this cycle, your chances are probably better than usual to have last-minute changes in the T14 as HYS finalize their plans and it filters down... 3
Wait List / Re: Michigan waitlist« on: July 19, 2006, 04:00:01 PM »angelina, thanks!!!!! Yes for me also, but it's not no-strings, jsyk--there's actually a note somewhere in the financial aid award letter that basically says you're expected to donate a commensurate amount of money to the school later even though you are not legally obligated to--they look on it as a moral obligation to pass it on, so to speak. 4

Also, CONGRATULATIONS, Duck!
![]() That's great. If you REALLY want Michigan I suggest asking if you can defer. I did and got an offer within 12 hours of my request. It seems a few people have asked for and gotten deferrals from Zearfoss. 5
Wait List / Re: Michigan waitlist« on: July 19, 2006, 12:47:08 PM »I'm currenlty accepted at Norhtwestern, but with absoulutely no $$. Is it worth it to request a deferral from Michigan? What kind of need based financial aid does Michigan give to people who have an extremely low expected family contribution? Michigan seems pretty good with the need-based aid. I got nothing from GULC and about 10k per year from Michigan, FWIW. 6
General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Um, Remember All That Mess About Me Going To UMich...« on: July 17, 2006, 05:18:57 PM »One more thing about schedules: I called to ask if you can request a particular section (because unlike you, Angelina, I'd really like to be in E or F!) but they said the answer is almost always no (they might if you had some compelling reason). They have very good reasons for not taking requests, though, so it's all good. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case anybody is wondering. Other than registering at 8:15 am, what are the advantages to being in section E or F? Or is registering first the reason you want to be in them? Just wondering... 7

I have also heard that this is not the case. I think it depends what you go there looking for. If you want to be a grownup, chances are you can find some other grownups to study/hang out with. Like other people have said on this thread, all environments will contain some people who can't move on from high school (likely because it was the high point of their life, which is sad). I'm sure there are some of those in law school, but as long as you go to a reasonably-sized school, you don't have to interact with them that much. Unlike in some of the nightmare job scenarios people have posted about here, where the immature person is your boss, for instance, you can pretty much choose your company in law school, can't you? I have definitely noticed high-schoolish behavior in every work environment I've been in, crossing multiple industries, but I have also noticed that if you have the luxury of ignoring it, as I do in my current job, it is more amusing than anything else. 8

They sent out the email today with the Registration and orientation schedule, and they do it by section, so it seems rather important to know in advance...did I miss something. Oh, thanks! So, that means if we're assigned to section E or F we don't really have to show up at 8:15am on August 29th, since it might not be our correct section? ![]() not a morning person here, though I guess I'll have to get used to it because I noticed a substantial number of classes start pre-9:00am.

Also, FYI, I applied for the MAP loan and didn't have a problem--I signed all the promissory notes already and everything. I agree that the interest rates seem pretty shite for student loans, but interest rates are on their way up and I'm told that those rates will be looking pretty good by the time we graduate. Still, it's tough knowing that if I'd gotten my sh*t together and gone to law school a year earlier, I'd have a fixed rate of at least a couple percentage points less on the massive amount of money I'll be borrowing. <sigh> 10
General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Question for current Michigan students & summer-start 1Ls« on: June 29, 2006, 03:21:32 PM »Ann Arbor is serviced by AATA (Ann Arbor Transportation Authority; city buses) and University of Michigan buses. If you're 4 miles off campus, you'll rely on AATA busing almost exclusively. AATA buses come every half hour on most routes, and every 15 minutes on more popular routes. How convenient the AATA buses are may depend on where you live exactly. Check out the routes on the website: www.theride.org Thanks, it does. Not running past 10pm may be a major problem for me, though, since I don't have a car and I don't think you can use a bike very safely in winter (to judge from my experience of what I imagine to be similarly severe winters in Northern Vermont where I grew up). |
