Temple has a higher percentage of Philly biglaw jobs than any other school. That said, I know at least one person who was an excellent interviewer and on trial team but who couldn't get a big law job because of grades. Grades are beyond a doubt the #1 factor.

Wow, this is pretty pitiful. Chris is definitely the party who is in the right here. For all you law students: are personal attacks the only way you can think? Chris has some valid points, and is being pretty reasonable, and the best arguments you can make are little more than name-calling. Is this what law school teaches? If so, even more reform is needed than what Chris recommends.
Yes, he pounds the points over and over again (although this somewhat necessary in the politics of today.) Yes, his posts are like books when simple sentences would do. Yes, he mixes his point and his political views unnecessarily. But he does make valid points, and the best that the rest of you can do is "I bet you go to a crappy school." Come on! You are offended by his views and the best responses you can come up with only serve to feed his logic! I bet you are going to make poor lawyers if you can't see the illogic in your own responses. 3

This thread made me feel better about my own apartment. I got a fairly nice, but small, 1BR in Philly for $715/mo, no utilities. That's way more than I am paying for my huge 1BR by Pitt; it's only 475+electric.
The new apartment is a block from Temple University. Yeah, if I were religious, I would already have made my peace with god

My bf has a Vaio that had a lot of problems... but it's about 5 years old, so I'm hoping quality's improved since then. Sony's quality has not improved much, if at all, from 5 years ago. Their laptops are still crap - although they look nice  .I would choose the Thinkpad in a second, and I say that as a person who has never owned a Thinkpad (although I have done lots of tech support for them.) How much is the time you WILL spend trying to get the Sony fixed worth to you? What if it dies right before exams? I would take a Thinkpad, a Dell, an HP, an Acer, or even a Gateway (maybe) over a Sony laptop. 7

Do I need to link to the video of the Macbook frying an egg on it's underside? The X60s has no more heat problems than the Macbook does. Yes, it is a bit more expensive...but you can also get a warranty with a reasonable turnaround rate (unlike Apple'care') and accidental damage coverage. 8

The Macbook's screen may have the perfect screen size, but the weight and battery life suck. It's 5.2lbs - that's very heavy for a laptop of this size. It's also unlikely that you will get more than 2.5hrs out of the battery, especially if you use it at full brightness.
Many other laptops are available today that are much lighter, with longer battery life - the Thinkpad X60s, for example. It weighs 2.7lbs and can get ~7 hours battery life. 9

I went with the Macbook + 2GB RAM. I also got an NC4010 off of http://www.retrobox.com for $290, which was pretty sweet. Value-wise, the NC4010 slays the Macbook in every way, but I am still happy with my Macbook decision. It is an excellent machine.
Here are some other factors about the Macbook vs. the Macbook Pro: Keyboard - the Macbook's keyboard is very different from the Macbook Pro. Personally, I like it better. However, some people on the 'net can't stand it. I would definitely check this out before you buy, because it can make a huge difference. Weight - the weight of the Macbook is terrible compared to the Macbook Pro, and especially to other notebooks in its class. The Macbook Pro has a 2" larger screen, but only weighs .4lb more. My HP NC4010 has a 12" screen, 1" less than the Macbook, but weighs only 2.5lbs - 1.7lbs less than the Macbook! The difference is very, very noticeable, and not in a good way. Speed - The graphics is the only real difference in speed. However, there are few reasons you would need the type of graphics card in the Macbook Pro. The main ones would be a) gaming b) 3D design or c) heavy Aperture (photo editing) work, all of which are unlikely for a prospective law student. Things like Google Earth and Google Sketchup will run fine on the Macbook's integrated graphics. They are DirectX 9 compatible, so Windows Vista will work as well. 10
