Law School Admissions / Georgetown Decision
« on: March 11, 2009, 10:21:50 AM »
If you applied to Gtown did you get an e-mail when your status checker went to "Decision" or did you have to wait for the snail mail?   ???

I think there is a catch-22 between being referred to as a girl (young, possibly inexperienced, lower in professional status, etc.) and being referred to as a woman (older but still rather age-ambiguous, more experienced, etc.)  It may just depend on the context in which each is used and the connotation associated with it.  "I met this nice girl at the market" may be totally different from "They gave that new girl a bigger office."  However, there may be situational clues we pick up on when deciding which word to use... such as how old does the female appear?  Do we know her real age?  Is she with her children? Is she married or is she still cruising college parties?  I suspect there is tension between the desire to be taken seriously and respected professionally and personally, while wanting to be perceived as youthful due to society's pressure on womens' age and the beauty industry that profits from it.  My two cents.

That being said, what about "ma'am" and "miss".  Personally, "ma'am" makes me feel older than I am...

Also, was above their 25% in both GPA and LSAT... leads me to believe there was something they didn't particularly like about my app.  C'est la vie.

bump

I received a similar e-mail and responded "yes" and got an acceptance + scholarship offer within a few hours.  This was later in the cycle last year, though.

Wow, good to know.  Although it would be nearly impossible to guess all the factors in the decisions, this gives me a glimmer of hope.  Thanks.

Did anyone else receive the UIUC e-mail from Paul Pless today?  It stated that my file had been reviewed for a second time and referred me to a survey.  However, the survey asks if I want to REMAIN on the waitlist?  Status checker still says Hold for Second Review....  ???

I know I must submit them, at some point.  I am just debating whether or not to do it as an unsolicited update to my application.  I think you are right though, it will only be a soft factor.  I'll take any help I can get, of course  :)

By "law school curve" I mean that the program uses the same curve as the law school at that university, which is an imposed median of 80% or a B.  But, yes, the grad school GPA would be an improvement to my UGPA.  The only reason I hesitate is because it's not an "A" average and although it's "good" maybe not "perfect"...

Law School Admissions / Grad. school grades

So, I am applying to law school this year and am doing a master's program this year.  Just got my first semester grades... turns out I have a B+ average.  Also, the program is graded on a law school curve.  Assuming I am applying to all T30 schools, should I submit these grades as an update to my application.  In other words... for T14-T30 schools, do you think the B+ average will hurt or help my apps?  (UGPA is ~3.1)

Thanks!
