I think that grouping all the V10s into one lump category is grossly uninformed.  First of all Cravath and Cleary don't even have minimum billables and their compensation is lockstep.  Secondly, the cultures at different V10 firms are vastly different.  Davis Polk is very different from Cleary, for example and Kirkland and Cleary are pretty much polar opposites.  Third, everyone works a lot - inside and outside of the V10.  Sure you'll find a difference between Cleary and Kramer Levin, but between Cleary and Sidley or between Cleary and Winston&Strawn - not so much.

I think the characterization you describe is highly inaccurate for most BigLaw.  Sure you work a lot, but most places you're not billing 2800 hours.  But I appreciate the input.

Well, for both of them I want to be doing high-level interesting work.  I also want to be at a place where the people are uniformly intelligent and interesting.  Furthermore, I want to be somewhere where I feel some job security - ie the firm isn't going to push back start dates, cancel its sumer program, no-offer summers, etc.

Cleary, specifically, I am interested in the international practice, quirky-environment, flexibility, diversity, and women's initiatives.

Cravath, specifically, I like the rotation system where I get to work with one partner, the extremely high level of responsibility I get as a young associate, and the prestige/exit opportunities that Cravath on the resume would afford me.

I know that I want to be at a large NYC law firm, I have no problem working a lot (although I do want to be able to take vacation and have some time to see family and friends), and I think eventually I would like to make partner at a large NYC firm, although that is subject to change.

Now OldCraig, I'm really looking forward to hearing your reasons/opinion not to go to either of these firms and I'm also curious where you would go instead.  Thanks!

I have no pension for misery:)  I am heading straight for firm life and at this point don't have much of an interest in doing anything other than big law.  However, I do like the idea of teaching as an adjunct while working at the firm at some point in my life.

Job Search / Cravath or Cleary

I have narrowed my decision to these two.  Where do I go?

Here are some of my thoughts/concerns:

- how much more do people at Cravath really work?
- will Cravath's lack of international offices (except for a really tiny London office) have an impact on its future profits?
- does Cleary "force" people to go to its international offices if you're fluent in that language, even if you want to stay in NY?
- will Cravath really give me better exit options?
- I have no idea what I want to do, leaning towards corporate but also interested in tax and litigation - Cravath worries me because I"m only allowed to split my summer between two of these.
- do I have a better chance of making partner at Cleary than Cravath?

Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Pam - not sure if you got my message - but can you elaborate?  I would be really interested in hearing your reasons/experience.
