Transferring / Boalt Email
« on: July 03, 2008, 02:39:26 AM »
I am a transfer app to boalt, and havent heard anything yet until today, when I got this email:

"To All Transfer Admits,

The Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic has asked that we send you the attached application. For more information, please visit the Samuelson Clinic's website.

http://www.law.berkeley.edu/clinics/samuelsonclinic/

Thank you,

-Berkeley Law Admissions Office"

Did every transfer applicant get this?  My hopes are kind of tentatively up because it says "admits."

Transferring / Re: Berkeley vs. Columbia

There are advantages to Colombia.  It's just a more elite school, better shot at clerkships, easier roads everywhere you go in the future.

Transferring / Snowball's chance?
« on: June 07, 2008, 12:24:21 AM »
Hit me with the truth people:  I have been planning to transfer to Boalt, because I did very well in my first semester.  I am trying to transfer from UCLA to Boalt because I hate Los Angeles, grew up in Norcal, and want to be back, so spare me any comments on why its dumb to transfer.

Here's the thing...I did nowhere near as well second semester.  My grades (3.45) put me in about the top 15-20% at UCLA or so, closer to 20.  I've submitted everything, letters, etc, but I'm now starting to accept that I don't have a snowball's chance in hell.  Is there any reason to believe I have a shot?

Studying and Exam Taking / Clever Professors Piss Me Off
« on: May 10, 2008, 12:37:42 AM »
Nothing angers me more than cute exam questions designed solely for the purpose of telling other professors about your clever question next time the topic comes up.  You put students through months of reading and hard work, have them work hard to memorize all kinds of doctrines for exams, and then come up with some bull 2 line question or quotation and tell them to right an hour essay on it.

There's no way to justify this kind of exam.  The only skill it tests is an ability to bull effectively for an hour.  This is a pretty useful skill at most jobs and in life in general, I know, but nothing makes me angrier than studying for hours, taking endless practice tests, knowing all the material, and suffering because a professor wants to prove how clever he or she is.

/end rant

Transferring / Are Transfers Happy?
« on: April 26, 2008, 01:28:49 AM »
Ok, this is a serious question.  After being a very happy kid for four years in undergrad, I am absolutely miserable in Law School.  More than anything, socially things just haven't worked out for me, and I am really lonely.  Just haven't found my group so to speak, didn't like the kids in my section, etc.  I really actually enjoy class, it's the out of class that's killing me.  I moved back close to home for school, and now I'm home with parents all the time on weekends instead of going out.  Part of me just wants to flee to an entirely new major city and try to make things work.

That being said...for those of you who have transferred, how have your results been?  Are you happy where you are?  Is it hard to meet people coming in as a transfer?  Also, have you found that employers treat you the same way as other kids at the school?

Thanks,
Mike

Studying and Exam Taking / Examsoft restart issues
« on: December 05, 2007, 04:05:14 AM »
Im having big troubles with examsoft, maybe someone can help me out.  I start it up in secure mode, so it restarts, and I go in and take the test.  However, once I exit the computer reboots to get back into normal mode...but it never gets there.  Instead it hangs on saving your settings forever, and if I power down im screwed cause it says it never got my answer.  Please help, Im in desparate straights.

Transferring / Transfer from UCLA to Boalt
« on: December 02, 2007, 04:44:54 AM »
For largely social and family reasons, I want to be back in Nor Cal next year.  I'd love info on the following, since I just started thinking about this:

1)  When is the final date transfer apps are due on LSAC?
2)  Do I need new letters of recommendation?
3)  The Boalt site actually says they don't tell people until August...can that actually be true that you dont find out until about 2 weeks before school starts?  That seems crazy.
4)  UCLA is a bit below Boalt, but it's a pretty good school, and is projected to move into Top 14 next year I think.  How well do I need to do to get in?

Thanks.  Any help would be AWESOME.

General Board / Re: Does briefing cases as a 1L = waste of time?
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:17:40 AM »
I've been doing briefs for each case so far to cover the issue, holding, analysis, etc.  It doesn't take all that long, and it's nice to have.  Just having to stop and think about how you're going to word the issue helps learn it i think.

I was kinda confident about what I was doing until I came to this board tonight!  My plan was to read all the cases, brief them immediately, and take full notes in my classes.  Then I hoped to assemble some sort of Meta outline of the major rules and points with my study group, and use all that to study for finals.  Now I get the impression from around here that I am doing far too little, and that I have hours and hours of outlining I should be doing.  Can someone tell me whats up?

Could you guys help me out a bit and clarify exactly what you mean by outlining?  I just started as a 1L at UCLA, I have only been in class 4 days.

My typical day goes like this:  I go to my classes, which I have already read and done a quick brief for.  In the brief I identify the facts, issue, holding.  I then take notes on what the prof says in class, and change anything I screwed up or missed in my brief.  Between classes, I do the readings for the day, do my briefs, and go home around 6.

I kinda always figured the briefs I am doing IS outlining.  Is there something I'm missing?  Are you guys talking about just going back and reformatting your notes?

Thanks,
Mike

Any reviews on this website?  I am currently a 1L, and am trying to decide what my best option is for some extra help.  Is there any point in using their help, or should I just get a book?
