I am at a lower T1 and got a COA clerkship without being on the editorial board. I am top 2%; I know that the EIC this past year got a COA clerkship and her grades were not nearly as high. So, I'd guess that editorial board or very high grades would be enough for students from my school.

If you have an offer at a lawfirm and then accept a clerkship, how does this usually affect the offer? Are they generally kept open; do most people accept an offer before starting the clerkship? Has anyone heard of a firm giving an offer, and then rescinding after they accepted a clerkship. I'm curious if firms are hesitant to pay the clerkship bonus to someone they may have given an offer to just to make sure their NALP form looked good.

The importance of Law Review all depends on which school you go to. If you are T14, don't worry. It you are outside the Top 30, BigLaw may now be quite a reach.

I mean journals that publish articles by students who attend other schools. My journal won't publish student written work except for a few notes from current journal members.

I'm curious about this myself. I've always heard that a state supreme court clerkship is as competitive as a federal district clerkship. Since it is NY, arguably the most competitive market in the country, would it be more competitive/prestigious than a district court clerkship?

sounds like a waste of 1500 bucks to me. LSAT + GPA pretty determines pretty much everything unless you are a borderline candidate.

What do you think is better, getting a letter from a professor with name recognition that doesn't really know you enough to say anything more than "he was prepared for class and got an A on my exam," or from a former non-legal employer or legal aid clinic supervisor who knows you well?

When applying for federal clerkships are the applications generally due before 4th semester grades come out (late June) or after?
