Title: DOWNY needs your help
Post by: DOWNY on October 01, 2004, 02:03:12 AM
Ok fuckers,
Here's the deal- I went to the bar tonight and had a great time. My male private part stayed in my pants and everything went smooth, unlike last week. However, I parked in this garage and when I got back to my car I saw a ticket on my windshield. It had an envelope and instructed me to pay what I owed and submit to some dropbox to exit. Well, I was pretty wasted at the time and really did not feel like driving around to find the exit and the dropbox. In addition, I did not feel compelled to spend any money to exit the garage if it was not necessary. Well, I did what any DOWNY would do in this instance and drove down the ramp in reverse (it was too tight to turn around) and exited backwards through the entrance without paying. I laughed. Now, my question is this- given that the ticket referenced my license number and car, what should I do? My gut reaction is to not do anything and tell the garage to go @#!* itself, which is what I did tonight. Can they do anything to me, and should I give a *&^%?

Love,
DOWNY

They're a private establishment, so the worst they can do is send your fine to a bill collector. You can then dispute the fine if you get a letter about it from a credit agency, and most likely neither the credit agency nor the garage will give a @#!* since it's probably what? a $30 fine?

Cool, thanks for the help- I will continue my policy of doing nothing and assuming it will go away.

Next time, keep the ticket and put it on your windshield for free parking.  Otherwise you have to hunt around for a car with a ticket and steal theirs.

OK similar situation(though not near as cool as Downy's) I bought a new car last week but it was not ready because they had to get it from another dealer. So the dealership give's me a car for the weekend. I drove the car to Houston where I got a parking ticket. But the funny thing was they ran the liscense plate on the car and it did not come back to the dealer but to some other poor idiot who I guess had just traded the car in a couple of days ago. My question is do I pay the ticket or let them send out the Houston swat team on this poor unsuspecting soul.I am thinking screw it as I don't think there is anyway that they can track it to me. Is this unethical? hmmmm

if you want to be a lawyer you should pay the fine... stupid *&^% like this can cause problems with the bar (credit problems, unpaid tickets)

I did this often in college, ride the motorcycle to class, stick an old ticket on it, and you own the parking space for a day.  Of course once I got a little cocky and did this too many days in a row, the metermaid checked the ticket and wrote another.

meter-maids never checked motorcycles at State...it was great.  Free parking right outside the building rather than 240 bucks a year for a ten minute walk.

Dear Downy,

Be wary of your actions.  By refusing to pay, you may have difficulty later obtaining bar membership for your lack of responsibility of adhering to the law.  I'm not coming down on you, but here's what will happen, at least in my state anyway.

I can't speak for your state, but I'll speak for mine.  I know there can be NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING of a sort pending on one.  This includes:  outstanding debt reported to collections - be it traffic, and yes it does include stupid parking tickets- on the street or in a garage, medical, c.c. etc., any small claims greivance court actions, the obvious DUIs and all the other *&^% that some of us did during the interum of our youth, even - being treated psychologically - OM!  They want to know about it and CAN/WILL find out about it.  All of it.  And if one lies about his past, or chooses not to disclose any question on a LS app. and/or Membership of Bar, one will not become a member of the Bar, and hence not be able to practice.  So be extremely cautious.  Again, I don't know your state's parameters, so ascertain it.

And no, having the if you leave it alone - it'll go away mentallity I don't think will dissipate in this scenario.

I sometimes think people take this a bit to seriously. There are a lot of peopel who have unpaid tickets that they do not even know they got or completly forgot about. The worst I see happening is that you go to take the bar and they find out and tell you to pay your damn fine before you are approved. I really can't see a bar association permanently denying you the rigt to practice law after 3 years of school just becasue you didn't pay a parking ticket. I think that this is one of those cases were the requirments are rather strict, but in reality I have never heard of someone who was permanantly denied the right to practice law because they had an outstanding parking ticket or debt. Now if you offed a couple of people and baried the bodies in your backyard you might have some problems.

DOWNY, are you sure that YOU were parked in the garage and one of your friends didn't borrow your car?

Don't matter.  That defense only works for cameras catching red light runners.  Even thrn,
Big Brother is updating these cameras to show the driver.  Bastards.

I've been in this situation many times, and I didn't bother to pay any of these tickets.  I have yet to be contacted by any collection agents;  I think that most of these garages can't be arsed to sent a $30 ticket to a collection agency.
