Title: 179/4.1(UGPA) Where can I expect to get into?
Post by: john_whit on July 31, 2007, 02:36:15 PM
Hey,
I am new to this forum, but I just came back from abroad and found out about my June LSAT score/tallied GPA. I majored in Nuclear Engineering and English.

My UGPA according to the LSAC is 4.1 (A+s really do help), I really want to see what financial package I can receive from these schools since I am filed as an independent.

My other qualifications include 4 years in Crew, Delta Kappa Epsilon and Men's Volleyball. Nothing I do really relate directly to law school.

I am thinking about Cornell and Columbia as my reach school since I've heard the Top 5 schools are extremely competitive. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Truly excellent flame.

You're in at Harvard, obviously, if by some miracle you're not flame.  (If not Yale.)

full ride everywhere else below Stanford.

Can I expect full rides from publics such as Berkeley and Michigan?

I got a token amount of need-based aid, but I'm still just under $46k in the hole for this year alone.

Denny is the first ever applicant to be attending a school he didn't get into.  There are 20 NASA PhDs currently working on how that happened.

 :D :D :D :D

That, my friend, is sig-worthy.

ETA: Damn, won't fit into the sig.

Yep, I am serious, except now I have a foreign transcript that I am not sure how that equals out to influence my UGPA.

Do you know if the T10 schools offer interviews? And do they count?

Harvard grants interviews to people they're likely to accept (they contact you).

Northwestern requires it for pretty much all of their applicants.

Cornell requires it of certain applicants (often seen as a way to guage interest among high-number applicants).

Chicago offers it from time to time on a case-by-case basis.

not required (yet) but they encourage everyone to interview (and most applicants do)

So if NW and UChicago interview most of their applicants, does that mean the interviews don't count as much?

How about Harvard? Does the interview count since it's pretty much guaranteed admission to those they interview?

It's definitely not guaranteed.  There are many people on this board who got interviews and were either rejected or waitlisted indefinitely.

Anyone who applies to NU can interview (it's basically part of the application). Hell, you can even sign up for the interview and then not apply. It's not like you land the interview or anything, but I'd say it's the 3rd most important part of the app (based only on personal experience).
Serious? Then I want my interviews right now! haha
Are these interviews typically with Admission officers or Alum? I hate those Alum interviews that I had to do for college apps.

It's also annoying, I just checked the NW site, and it seems that they don't start interviewing until October, I am planning to send in my app in Sept and get it over with. Any ideas on how I can approach this?

Serious? I wonder how the interviews work anyways. Are they usually formal with hardcore questions?

FYI: I did the interview before applying and it helped give me material for my "Why Northwestern" essay.

cal- did you end up getting into NW? I am sure they take notes but my experiences with the alum interviews have been non-influential to the final decisions?

I did. My numbers were kinda borderline. I interviewed well, and I got in before xmas. Meanwhile, USC dinged me and I'm still on the UCLA WL.

cal- if you don't mind what are your stats? where did you get into thus far?

Like I said, I did an alumni interview. It was like 30% about why I want to go to law school, 10% why I want to go to NU, 20% him selling me on NU, 20% about my past school and work experience, 10 % of my questions about landing a CA job after graduation and 10% misc

Seems quiet relaxed=) I am not too worried now. Thanks!

Just a phone interview.  Not hardcore at all.  Standard questions, usually about your essay topic/resume.

I could tell you to act all cool if you're offered one, but I basically did the entire interview with one breath since I couldn't breathe at all during it.

When they're selling the uni to you, it's very hard to know what happened. Did you dress formal? I went to get an interview with Johns Hopkins, it was pretty bad but I still got into for undergrad. blah

Ha, the gesture is all that matters.  Maybe next time...

When are you moving? Where'd you decide on, building-wise?

Moving in mid-August (about two and a half weeks from today).  Got a place about a 10 minute walk to the law school, near the little business district on Chapel St.

Emory? Are you looking to do BIGCOKELAW? And I'm not talking about the white stuff.

I would add UC Hastings. It's the oldest law school in California.
