Title: Too many people are lying
Post by: Primetime on June 30, 2007, 11:48:06 AM
Every poster could not be getting a 178, 172, 175.

You are telling me the 1 percent of people who get these scores all post on LSD?

Some may be lying, but it's also self-selection.  The high scorers are more likely to report their scores.

And people who obssess about the LSAT are more likely to 1) prep hard and 2) post here.

I doubt it. I have talked to three people on aim. They all admitted not scoring any where close to what they have posted.  I think the majority of people are in their boat.

I am not sure what their motive is. I think ego. Maybe they got a 162 and they are happy. But they know a 162 on here would look like a 152. So they pump up their score to have LSD cred.

I think it is fair to say that the avg. score of a poster on this site is higher than avg. but I don't think that the best test takers would post here.
Those getting 175+ probably have somemthing better to do with their time. JMO

Why would having a higher or lower score give someone cred?
It's just a multiple choice test, not some battery of overall intellect.

Well, we have to take your word for this.  However, it seems easier to simply not post your score if you're embarrassed by it.

They are not embrrassed. A 160 is a good score. They are proud. And they want some props. But you can say i got a 160! On LSD people will say sorry.

So they're proud of their 160, so they're going to claim 170 to get proportional props?  Doesn't add up.  I think it's more likely they just stay quietly proud, and don't post their score.  Which is why we haven't seen many 160's. (Though we did see one.)

LOL. They are lying. One guy did a prank last september on LSD. He emailed everyone their score. I think he emailed a 159 for everyone. Then everyone came on LSD and claimed they got different scores. Most in the 170s.

And they all found out it was a prank.

They aren't lying - the low scorers are too disappointed with our scores to want to post them. It's depressing to see everyone posting their 170+ scores, so we're not going to post our own scores because we can't even believe they're for real.

That scale was shocking - it got my hopes up, I really thought I performed better....

I got a 160 and I was terribly disaapointed. I need at least a 165. But this board makes you feel like anything below 170 is bad. I have learned that 160 even combined with my horrible GPA will get me into school.. So, I'll retake and whatever happens, life goes on.

You should move the 99 to make it 199, and 120 to be the percentile.  That would be *more* realistic, at least on this board.

I don't know -- when people say that a score in the 150's is a "horrible" score, even though it's above average, and good enough to get into law school, it doesn't help much

Is it above average? I was under the impression that a lot of people who took the LSAT didn't actually end up attending law school. Since I haven't seen any discussion of marks 120 - 140 at all, it's a fair assumption that the majority of those are at the lower end of the scale. So I think a 150s score (at least low to mid) is unlikely to be the average of those attending law school.

Title: Re: Too many people are lying
Post by: EarlCat on September 29, 2007, 10:53:38 AM
I think the discussion of a "good" score or a "bad" score needs to consider the utility of a particular score.  Some people are not interested in becoming judges, justices, scholars, lecturers, attorneys general or anything like that.  For them, attempting to achieve a 170+ is not an economical use of their time and/or money.  Someone whose only goal is to work as a family law attorney in Nashville, for instance, doesn't gain much utility out of hitting a score higher than is required to get into the Nashville School of Law.  For them, a 145-149, while "below average" is a perfectly good score, and there's no reason to look down on it.

Is it above average?

The average LSAT score is a 151/152.  So most LSAT scores in the 150's are in fact above average.

I was under the impression that a lot of people who took the LSAT didn't actually end up attending law school.

Sure.  Not really relevant, though.

It is if you are making a judgement call about what makes a 'good score'. Which is what people are doing when they discuss results.

Since I haven't seen any discussion of marks 120 - 140 at all, it's a fair assumption that the majority of those are at the lower end of the scale.

120-140 are by definition at the lower end of the scale.  That doesn't say anything about 150's, though.

You also can't assume anything just because people don't discuss lower scores. Obviously, people will be reluctant to discuss lower scores.

My bad, a complete referential failure. Those = those who don't attend law school. My assumption is that the vast majority of those who don't attend law school score at the lower end of the scale and so the average person you are competing against is better than the scaled LSAT averages would suggest.

So I think a 150s score (at least low to mid) is unlikely to be the average of those attending law school.

Nobody said a low 150's score is the average of those attending law school.  It's simply an average LSAT score, period.

That said, a low 150's score will in fact get you into law school (with half-decent grades).  And there's little doubt in my mind that the average LSAT score of students attending law school today is in fact in the 150's.  Keep in mind that most schools are not in the first tier, and only about 15% of all testakers break 160.

15% of all test takers but what percentage of those attending law school? 25 - 30% is my impression, which would make a big difference to a subjective assessment of the score. Which is what people are doing when they discuss results. Your last point, however, is well taken.

Sadly, there's a lot of that too, at least indirectly in terms of bashing the *&^% out of schools who falls below a certain arbitrary rank number. It's quite sad really, but it just shows that some people, despite scoring high on the LSAT test, are very insecure and need to take a piss on others to feel good about themselves.

And for the record, I wore my 156 proudly too, but I must say that my retake (http://img55.imageshack.us/my.php?image=retake2yq6.jpg) do make me feel a bit better:p
