Title: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: caligirl404 on June 20, 2007, 03:41:54 PM
Has anyone on the waitlist for either of these schools heard anything yet?  The waiting is driving me crazy!  I'm so excited to run out and get the mail everyday, only to find nothing  :'(  I know Nancy Reagan heard from Southwestern, but has anyone else on here?

I don't know...

Waiting on Southwestern is killing me. My best friends are moving out there in August, and I have to tell them by July 15th if I'm joining them.  It's a great school, and I want to be with them... UGH.

Do you mind me asking what your numbers are?

155 and 3.5 with a good resume, work experience, and some good law internships...I also had a pretty big extenuating circumstance that explained the low lsat score.

Darlinalexi: Are you just gonna wait out the waitlist until school starts or do you have a deadline date that if you don't hear by then you are going somewhere else/sitting out for a year?
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: darlinalexi on July 04, 2007, 12:48:01 PM
I have a tentative deadline of July 16th or I will sit out a year.  It kills me to set a deadline, but I live in Florida, and I can't reasonably move across country in less time than that (especially on EXTREMELY limited means).  Of course, that is not to say that if I get a call on the 17th that I'll say no...

How about yourself?  If you get into Chapman will you still wait on Southwestern?
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: caligirl404 on July 04, 2007, 10:17:51 PM
Well I live in Arizona so I can move a little easier than you can to California, so I think I'll wait it out as long as possible.  Southwestern is my top choice so if I got into Chapman I'd wait and see what/if I heard from Southwestern.  I don't know, hopefully it won't resort to that and Southwestern will let me know SOON!

I talked to someone at Chapman today and she said that some students have already been taken off the waitlist, some accepted and some rejected, but to be patient.

That's so much easier said then done..ugh  ???

I'm about ready to give up and just take the year off.  I can't have my life in limbo much longer.  If I am staying in Florida, I have to sign a lease soon.

... it does beg the question, though, of why they didn't just cancel their applications...

Post by: darlinalexi on July 11, 2007, 03:07:29 PM
That's true. The deposit of $600 was due early June, and they kept sending registration and new student material up until yesterday. BUT at least they're doing something about it now?

Good luck to all those waitlisted! I'm still waiting on my first choice... So I definitely know how it feels!

Good luck to you and thanks for the info.  Where are you waiting on?  Did the letter they sent out give them one more chance or an extended deadline?  Or was it just like "you didn't pay so we are giving you the boot..."

Darlinlexi and Caligirl,

would either of you consider attending part-time?
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: Nancy Reagan on July 12, 2007, 10:45:25 AM
Well, I hate to say it, but I am seriously considering withdrawing from SW.  So, perhaps, my seat will be available by Monday.  Sadly, my financial circumstances have changed since I applied.  After figuring out what I'll borrow and owe, my situation sucks.  My monthly payments will be about $2200 for 10 years.  This is not really feasible for living in Los Angeles.  I called the school to see if there is any way to obtain any scholarship money and was told that "it has all been disbursed." (Probably a lie since others are being enticed with $ to commit.)

Anyway, this is all starting to sound insane to me.  I guess we all have to ask ourselves what we are willing to do to make law school a reality.  I strongly encourage anyone who is paying top dollar to go to school (like me) where the market is pricey (Cost of Living in LA is nuts) to consider what it will be like to have a huge loan payment for 10 years...

No, I'm not interested in part time.

And Nancy, I'm sorry to hear that.

Aww, Nancy I'm sorry to hear that- I hope everything works out for you.

I wasn't really wanting a part-time positions but I might consider it if it was all I was offered.  I have a few things that I would need to figure out such as insurance.  I'm only 21 so still under my parents insurance but if I'm not a full-time student that changes so I would need to figure that out.  Also, I'd want to make sure that I could transfer to full-Time the following and be able to take summer school or something to allow me to graduate in 3 years.  So hopefully I'll just get a full time spot and won't have to worry about all that other stuff!

Nancy- did you check out the apartments in Glendale? They have much better prices than places in LA and since you would be driving against traffic Glendale is only about 20-30 minutes away.

I received a phone call one 7/11 saying that I was accepted from the wait list.  I called Southwestern today and asked whether or not there was a possibility to receive scholarship funds.  They told me that most of the scholarship funds have already been offered to other applicants.  I plan on calling tomorrow 7/13 and letting them know that I will not be attending Southwestern this fall.

Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: caligirl404 on July 12, 2007, 04:14:48 PM
I can transfer after a year but it will take 3.5 to graduate then.  I talked to them a lot and with insurance stuff it would be hard to do part time so they are checking for a full time spot right now.  They should be calling me back either by the end of today or early tomorrow.  I'm soooooo nervous, like pacing around frantically and shaking and omg now im rambling haha.  Wish me luck!

Nancy- did you check out the apartments in Glendale? They have much better prices than places in LA and since you would be driving against traffic Glendale is only about 20-30 minutes away.

Thanks for the thought!  I am attempting to secure a place in Pasadena for free - thanks to the extreme kindness and generosity of a dear friend.  If I decide to take him up on his offer, I will keep my seat.  If not, it is just too much money to owe for someone my age (37 in Sept.)

Good luck Caligirl!!  Darlinalexi: If I give up my seat on Monday, I sure hope you get it - or even better - I hope they just give you one tomorrow!

Caligirl:

As for health insurance, you might want to think about a PPO from ehealthinsurance.com.  They find you the lowest rate based on your needs. You can get, for example, Blue Cross or Blue Shield and it isn't too horrible in price.  My monthly cost for the duration of school will be about $160 per month.  Just another cost of living expense, really.

Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: caligirl404 on July 12, 2007, 05:40:36 PM
See the thing is, I'm only 21 so still covered under my dad's insurance as long as I'm a full time student.  I'd really like to keep that insurance until I'm 23 if possible.  I didn't want to go to law school part time but said I'd consider it at Southwestern since it was my top choice.  After they called me today, I called my insurance to find out exactly what classifies as "full time" and they don't have a credit amt (ie 12 credits a semester) they just said they have to have a letter from the school saying you are enrolled full-time.  So, if Southwestern can offer me a full time spot I would prefer that for many reasons, and if they can't then I'll have to decide if it's worth just waiting a year and reapplying or finding new insurance-which I know my dad doesn't like the idea of.  So, I'll just wait and see what they tell me.  Thanks for the info though Nancy, I might have to check it out!  My mom died of breast cancer a couple months ago so insurance is super important now more than ever for my dad haha...well, as it should be for everyone I guess.  Anyways, I'm crossing my fingers that none of this will even be necessary and they will offer me a full time spot.  Thanks for the help!

Oh, I am so sorry about your mother.  I lost my sister to a heart attack five years ago, so I know what you mean about the added importance of health insurance.  Hang in there; I am sure the school will work it out for you.  (I'm crossing my fingers, toes, eyes, etc.)

Thanks for the encouragement and best of luck to you!  I have a chronic health condition that requires I keep good insurance (one reason I didn't list PT as an option), and so I feel your pain.  Hopefully we'll be classmates and they'll let us know before the weekend.

It just said to submit final info for review.  I'm wondering if this is a good sign or just a form sent out to everyone waitlisted.  I don't want to get my hopes up because I really have to sign a lease and go on second interviews for jobs.
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: caligirl404 on July 17, 2007, 10:07:29 AM
I think it was an email sent out to everyone on the waitlist.  Seemed pretty generic and said that if those people who had remained on the waitlist had already made final plans to let them know.  They are probably trying to find out who has stayed on the waitlist and who has serious intentions of attending if offered a spot.  I think they should have sent this out awhile ago though since everything seems to be coming down to the last minute!

Darlinalexi-Are you gonna stay on and hold out a bit longer or have you decided to just wait until next year?
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: darlinalexi on July 17, 2007, 12:53:12 PM
Hey Cali,

Well... last night I had a good cry and have pretty much resolved that I'm staying in Tallahassee. I've interviewed for 3 jobs.  I'm looking for apartments.

If I get a job and find an apartment, I'm taking it. If Southwestern calls me before I sign a lease, I'll go.  I'm officially on the waitlist until the 30th.  I wrote the Dean and explained my situation and that I could not wait much longer so please let me know if they are honestly not interested because I just don't have the resources to pick up and move.  I was ready to withdraw today, but since I have yet to find that apartment and I assume that email is indicative of some kind of waitlist activity, I'll stay on until I finalize other plans.

And basically I am numb.

Darlin- I really hope everything works out for the best and that you get a place at Southwestern this year!  Do you know where you would live if you do get in?  It sucks waiting around like this.  I am currently in California on vacation and I would LOVE it if they would give me a real decision about the FT soon so I could find an apartment while I'm here.

But eitherway I hope they let you know something soon.
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: caligirl404 on July 18, 2007, 05:33:08 PM
So I've decided that I will be attending Southwestern Part-Time this fall.  I really wanted full-time but after talking to admissions today they informed me that no decisions will me made until the very end of July/beginning of August and I just can't wait that long to find housing and move.  Also there was no guarantee that I would be able to still have a part time spot if not offered a full time one.  So I figured, why jeopordize an opportunity when I can just go part time and then transfer to full time next year.  So now I have to find an apartment in LA!  Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much for the love, everyone. I was going to withdraw, take a job in another law admissions office, and sign a lease this afternoon.  This came at the absolutely best time.  I really wish luck to those still in limbo.

Skeptic- where would you recommend living? I want to live on the metro, and I was looking at Mid-Wilshire or Koreatown if I could.  Are those areas safe?

Studios are $1449, but go up depending on your location in the building.  Rent is high but I spent all day looking yesterday and everything is at least that much if not more-if you want a safe area with a half way decent apartment.

Sure!  I just went there yesterday and took a tour and it's REALLY nice.  Plus, if you sign a 12 month lease you get a month free-which helps a bit.  Have you looked around a lot for a place to live Fred?  I spent literally all day yesterday, looked at tons of places and for me this was by far the best.  The area wasn't my favorite but I figured I'm close to school and can walk so that's all that really matters.  Good luck finding a place!

Darlinalexi-Do you have a place to live yet?
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist

Nope, I haven't found a place yet.  I thought I was going to be moving out with friends, but they got so used to the idea of maybe staying here that now they are.... so now I'm going alone.  I really want to keep it within the school's housing budget and I am worried about that.   Also, I need to get private loans to move out.  I was provisionally approved for one yesterday, but I need proof of enrollment which I don't have yet... ahh... sorry, I am really, really happy but this is a lot in a short period of time....

Cali -

I attended SW as a PT student throughout my time there (Dec '06 grad). Because I always maxed out my units (11-12 per semester; 5-6 every summer), I was able to graduate after only 3.5 years, even though I was working full-time and commuting all the way from Ventura.  So even if you stay PT, if you take enough units, you can graduate in about the same amount of time as the FT folks.  Further, I had plenty of friends who started as PT, and were able to switch to FT after the first year.

I enjoyed my time at SW, and had no trouble passing the CA bar on the first attempt.  So I think it's a great school.  Enjoy it.

With respect to living arrangements, if you visit the school, they always have roomate ads up on the boards.  I would try not to lock in long-term with someone you don't know very well.  You may eventually meet people in class who would make a better roomates than your original cloice, and you want to maintain the option of exploring those opportunities within the first year.

Best regards.

I can't wait to get my schedule and financial aid stuff and everything...yay.

Sorry about the delayed response, I completely forgot about this website in a matter of days, LOL.

Anyways
To be honest with you, I live at home with my family.  However, most of my friends live in the Silvelake area, including some parts of midwilshire.  I wish I could help you more, but i think it's wise to look into those areas, since students rent there for good reasons

Thank you.  Originally I wanted to attend Southwestern but I figured I would only be accepted PT, if at all.  The neat thing about Chapman PT is that I am able to take classes this summer and become FT by my second year, which enables me to graduate in 3 yrs.

Southwestern I would have to apply and chance it.

Since we have a general idea of Southwestern and Chapman, whats better Southwestern PT or Chapman FT?

Although Chapman is a Tier 4 I this hard to believe due its high median lsat and gpa, as well as being located in a lucrative area (orange county), and its bar passage rate is on par with other CA Tier 1 schools.  Just my two cents...

Darlinalexi- Have you found a place to live yet?  Also, have you received your username/password for the email and assignments yet?

Nope... I have yet to get either... I swear I've called every landlord in LA and it just seems that nothing is available at a reasonable price.

Yeah, finding housing was the worst part for me!  I just had to realize that in order to be in a safe area with a decent apartment I was going to have to pay a bit more than I wanted.  What are your plans-keep looking or just wait until you get out there?
Title: Re: Chapman/Southwestern Waitlist
Post by: darlinalexi on July 28, 2007, 11:32:34 AM
I'm going to keep looking.  I'm trying to find a place in West Hollywood on the Metro.  I'd love to live around the gay population of LA, and I'm going to take the Metro everywhere.  The problem is that my "roommate" keeps going back on forth as to living together versus staying in Florida longer. I'm trying not to pay more than 900 a month for my half.  So I'm looking for studios as well.   I don't need to live right next to school as long as I'm on the Metro, and I've heard the area around school isn't so great... It's nervewracking.  Anytime I see an apartment I like, it's not available.

I applied for a private loan to cover moving expenses... If everything goes through, I hope to start driving out there on Monday the 6th. I'll get there a couple days before orientation and hopefully will have a chance to get unpacked and get furniture before orientation.  Are first day assignments due the 13th or the 20th?

I haven't been able to get any information from Chapman's admissions office - they just asked to be patient since some applicants on the waitlist opt to be removed or select another law school so the make-up of the waitlist pool is changing almost daily which prevents them from being able to make a forecast about any one applicant.  They said they are reviewing files each day and notifications will be sent out to those selected up until the class is filled, which could be as late as August  :-\

I've received a letter from Chapman today and was taken off the waitlist... My current Dilemna now is whether to still wait for Southwestern which they told me could open up more spots during the week of August 13th(Their Orientation)

Additionally, I'm slated to attend Cal Western this fall. Any thoughts on whether there is a significant advantage to going to either school?

Come on over to Chapman! I really wanted to go to Cal Western but was rejected before I updated my transcripts.  To be honest, I am glad I am going to Chapman over Cal Western.  CW is stagant, and will not be moving up in the rankings.  Chapman is young and full of potential.  Also, I have heard of the dreaded curve at CW accompanied by a high attrition rate.

If you go to nalp.org and search law firms that hire from different law schools you will see that Chapman, after only 12 years of being in business, has a good share of firms in Orange County.  In California, Chapman has a higher bar passage rate for 1st time takers.

Median salary is higher too.  Of course my opinion is biased.

Yeah, I'm on the waitlist at Southwestern and it's really frustrating, cause if I don't get in there, I have to go to Michigan, which is a good school, but I'm from LA and I went to USC, which is down the street from Southwestern, so I'm completely familiar with the area.
The waiting only gets worse by the day >:(

I too was placed on the waitlist for both Chapman and Southwestern. I have not heard anything, either. Looks like I am going to be attending Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa - They offered me a great Merit Scholarship each year that really helps towards tuition costs.

Best of Luck ;)

Congrats on Chapman! I've started researching the Michigan area already, and I'm getting depressed about it. Thinking about living in the snow is starting to make me feel bummed.

I was waitlisted at Chapman and UNLV.  I was on an online chat the other day with the admissions office at Chapman and they didn't have any good news to give waitlisted students, it really sucked.  I'm still waiting on Southwestern I applied in January and still haven't heard anything......hopefully that's a good sign.
