Title: HARDEST LSAT QUESTIONS
Post by: mr on May 20, 2007, 09:11:10 PM
As we get closer to June let's make a list of the hardest of LR, LG and RC so that we can go over them for confidence and experience. Just add in posts and I'll compile later.

Also, if you think any of these deserve to be bold, then post.

I was going to outline what I thought the hardest were, but no one seemed all that interested in adding their own, so I kind of let it go...

Should I fill out the rest? Maybe this Sunday.

Thing is, there was another thread that featured some of the most troublesome games...and it was quite an extensive list if I remember correctly.  I can't even find the thread now because of the bygone search function.

Take a look at June 2005 (PT # 46) section 4 #24

I wanted to post the reference for the one about bees and insects and vision but I could not find it. (it is a strenthen question)

There is also a semi recent nasty LR one about the age of people living in some area.  Stimulus gives a big age, 65 I think, and TCR has the number 18 in it.

Just did the bee one an hour ago in prep test #42 section 2 quesiton 18 and yes, I missed it. :)

I think we should start stepping up to the plate and start providing explanations for these.

Just post an explanation for any on the list.

June 04 reading comp.  I completely ran out of time on the 4th passage, and the 2nd passage also gave me a headache.  All and all, I got destroyed on this one and all the progress that I thought I was making felt like it went down the drain.

Title: Re: HARDEST
Post by: mr on June 03, 2007, 01:21:17 PM
Seems to be just a tad bit open ended....just a little.

Yes, it is.

The first question:

In a certain game, two of the girls wear red hats; the other children wear among themselves two blue hats and one yellow hat.  If they line up one behind the other, all facing the same direction, and the child fourth in line sees two girls and one boy, each wearing a different colored hat, which of the following must be true?

I.   The fourth child is either a boy in a blue hat or a girl in a red hat.
II.   Both boys are wearing blue hats.
III.   Only one boy is wearing a blue hat.

(A)   I only
(B)   II only
(C)   III only
(D)   I and II only
(E)   I and III only

My guess is that the Grateful Dead was in town when they wrote this game.

Answer is A.

Girl ---> Red
Girl ---> Red
Girl, Boy, Boy ----> Blue, Blue, Yellow

There are two groups. Positions 1 2 and 3. And positions 4 and 5.

Group one has 2 girls and a boy. Because of that, we know there must be one of the red capped girls in that group, and a boy and girl taking either blue or yellow, due to the exclusion of same caps in one two and three.

From there we know that the second red capped girl is in 4 or 5 teamed with a blue capped boy.

I: Yes, this must be true.
II: This doesn't have to be true due to the switching potential of yellow and blue between the second girl and boy in group 1.
III: This doesn't have to be true either. For the same reason.

Answer choice A

I wanted to add this tricky little game to the mix. It's not really hard once you get the trick, but its good to wrap up your studying I think with little things like this one that aren't really the norm.

I believe that lovely passage is in September 2006 test #50, fourth passage.  I really don't think it is all that bad but it seemed to rock the worlds of the test takers last year.

When I read it I enjoyed it but I am into science and physics and stuff.

Bless you for adding this one.  I just finished that test yesterday and missed an all time high of 8 in that RC section.  My score was a 167, lowest I've had in weeks.  That passage was killer.

Rosenberg and Juarezstern Are Dead?  Even the explanation of that game takes twenty minutes.  It's most easily set up as a  4-tiered ordering game split with two tiers for each character, one for the textbook and one for whether it's introductory or advanced.  The major deductions are that J1=R2, R5=J6, and R must go A-I-A-I-A-I.

Anyone have a candidate for hardest individual LR problem?  I nominate the titanium ink/Gutenberg Bible question.

I always found the math problems easy, although students seem to have a world of difficulty with them.

Definitely agree on the dioxin/fish/mill weaken question, that one's tough.

Don't recall the bee vision question.  I'll have to look it up.  2003 seems like a hard year overall.

Key to the bee question is realizing that the stimulus describes two causal relationships: bee vision caused flower development and flower color didn't cause bee vision development. TCR affirms the latter relationship.

The bee vision question is on 13-66.

Yeah, OK, you see that kind of 'which is cause, which is effect?' reasoning from time to time - like the Crux question about whether bad grades caused students to work or the other way around.  I don't think this question is particularly tricky, though; even though TCR is fairly twisted, the other 4 responses are pretty useless.
