'04 Acura RL. My second. I'm addicted to 'em.

I was about to get one of these a few years ago, but I couldnt find one I liked in the year I wanted. I really like the previous body style, but the new body style is sexy too!!

1991 Camry -- my second. I love the car.

I used to have an '89 Camry in high school in 2000 and then the transmission fell out of it, but I put it through H3[[ boy!! I am love with the '92 - '96 model Camry. I am thinking that when I graduate from law school I will just get one for myself as a graduating present. Those things last forever...

All in all I am happy and content driving my self crazy...

Most of the time a 1972 Jeep.  It has holes in it, is painted from a spray can, the frame is bent, it leaks like a sieve, gets about 11 mpg, no radio, no AC, one windshield wiper that sometimes works, and it smells kinda funny.  BUT its paid for, and on a sunny day I wouldn't trade it for anything.

The rest of the time I drive the tractor.

That's cool. I've never liked the 92-96 as well as the 88-91, but I definitely know how you feel, especially re: lasting forever. (My first had 191K miles and was going super strong when an 18 wheeler ran a red light and took it out.) My current one is having a few transmission problems, though. Hopefully nothing too serious, but if they are, I'll probably look for another. :-)

Two: What did you buy with your own money and now drive?

Lol. TITCR. I paid for my own car and it's now 10 years old- it'll be 12 yrs old when I graduate. I do notice the number of late-model cars listed so far, and you are correct that most of these are nearly impossible to buy as students. You'd be surpirsed how long a car will last if you care for it well.

Actually, it doesn't. I know if my single parent offered to buy me a new car, I would probably take it without even a cordial refusal. Not even an "Are you sure you can afford that, mom?"

But for those of us who do handle our own transportation expenses, how much are you budgeting for insurance/maintenance/gas/auto loan payments in a year?

1985 Mercedes 380SE that is currently in the paint shop. Just had a 5.7 liter engine put into it based on a Mercedes M117 560 engine, with lightweight 10:1 pistons, custom super-lumpy cams, jet-hotted tri-y's, other stuff...it's absolute nonsense. I'm thinking about going to a standard cam. Oh, and for the record, though it may be a 1985, that's back when MB made cars right and all of the mechanicals were still going strong, this was out of want, not need. Parents know it's going into paint, but they don't know about the $19k of mechanicals that have gone into it...they won't be pleased, oh well what's done is done.

Its not the size, its the stupid lift kits they are putting on cars these days. Im not talking about jeep wranglers here, Im talking about the "crossovers" and non offroad capable suvs they throw at us these days.

Hey! Lets jack station wagons up by 3 inches and call them SUVs! Sure it will kill the gas millage and handling, but people can feel cool that their station wagon/ hatchback has a lift kit!

in undergrad i started off with a black corvette, then a hunter green stealth when the vette was stolen, then a jeep wrangler sahara for the last two years.  the jeep was my favorite car ever.
all paid for by me since i was a non-trad.

i'll be going to law school with my current car, jeep grand cherokee ltd with 120k miles (driving 2 hrs for work the last 5 yrs will rack up the mileage).  i can't remember the last time i had car payments.  hope i never have to worry about those again.  i'll just drive this one until it konks out and save up money for a new car.

HA!  I drive a 1990 Volvo 240 Wagon with just over 200K miles on it, and I LOVE IT.  So what if only one speaker works and the windscreen wipers only work on one speed - it has character.  I'm totally against owning a new car until I can REALLY afford it, and I'm more interested in saving money for law school than owning a new car.  Plus, it helps when your car is only worth about $1500 - my insurance payments are about $60/month :)

Alas, the Volvo will not be making the trip to LA with me, so we're taking my boyfriend's 2007 Civic Hybrid, and I will be investing in a bike - although I really need to investigate a route from the apartments to campus that doesn't involve getting on the 405 on a 10-speed...

Has "The ladies wild" already been given as an answer?

We all knew that already.

Don't own a car at the moment, but will be buying an orange  (or maybe silver - still haven't decided yet) Honda Fit (2007 obviously as it's a new model) sport version for law school during Memorial Day weekend.

I'm thinkig of buying a Fit, or a Civic.  My current '92 Mazda broke down.  I've given up.  I'm getting something new for Yr 1L

Yeah, I'm in between a Fit, Civic or Corolla. Ideally I want a Fit as it won't break my bank as much (I'll be going to school part-time while working full-time so I don't have to give up my pay), but I'm hearing that they are selling like hotcakes so if I can't get a Fit in a color I like, I might go with a Civic or Corolla although I hope it doesn't come to that! I like that a souped-up Fit (although it's not THAT souped-up compared to other cars) sport is under $17K whereas the Corolla I want is about $19K and the Civic I want is $20k+. But we shall see... It's also my first car EVER, so it's exciting for me!

I drive a 2004 BMW M3. I am a 22 year old male. I have totaled a car before (not my fault). My insurance payments are not fun.

Dude... I'm not much older, in a similar situation re: totaled car (btw, it was a pretty spectacular, NASCAR-ish wreck), and I drive a 2006 Mustang.

In NJ.

And I have speeding tickets.

EDIT: I think I just made myself sound like the worst driver ever... I just want everyone to know that the wreck was caused by a failure in my ABS system (that the state of NJ doesn't care about because I managed to avoid hitting anyone else and therefore must be at fault). Also the speeding tickets were... well, yeah, no excuses. I only have one recently, but NJ likes to own your soul, so the two I got 4 years ago still count.

I drove in to school to go to the admissions office and put in my seat deposit today, and I felt a little out of place in my '04 LS430.  I might buy a motorcycle or something to ride to school.

for smu undergrads, that car would be embarrassingly too old to drive around campus.

I did see a 997 turbo 911 in one of the student lots.  They seem pretty preoccupied with 3-series BMW's and SUV's though, probably too much to notice my old-man car.  :)

Talking about tickets, got one about three years ago at about 3am in the morning on an empty I-40 in Tennessee for what the dude called "Improper lane change". Guess I should eat my own words, so much for southern hospitality indeed.

If you were lucky enough that it got its paint on your car, and your car's paint is fine underneath of it, just go down to a car parts place (Advanced Auto Parts, Autozone, NAPA, etc) and pick up some rubbing compound. Also get a fine cut polish, a hand glaze, and then some past carnuba wax (honeslty, the car parts places don't carry good stuff, but I'm guessing it'll be good enough, for the polishes see if they have the 3M branded products, for the wax I guess your best bet at a car parts place is Meguiar's paste wax...don't get turtle wax or anything that says "cleaner wax" - btw, never buy Mequiar's wheel cleaner).

Get an old t-shirt, and use the rubbing compound to get the white paint off your car. This will remove the paint but also leave a bad finish. Then use the fine cut polish in a circular motion and then the hand glaze in a circular motion until you are satisfied with the finish, then put some wax on top of the area.

One thing I left out: do all the polishing in a circular motion (the hand glaze is also a type of polish...so is rubbing compound, it's basically just going from most aggressive - rubbing compound - to least aggressive - hand glaze), BUT do the waxing in a linear motion from front to back/back to front of the car, not circular.

If you're considering a Fit, I would also look at a Toyota Yaris.  I think they're really cute, and incredibly affordable (starting at around 11K).  All the reviews I've looked at are really positive considering it's a super cheap car, not to mention it gets 35+ mpg.
Title: Re: What do you drive?

I looked at one.  It was a tight sqeeze for me.  If I get a toyota it will be a corolla.  The Yaris is more of a chick car.  I'm not looking for "cute".  The Fit has more room and is good as a utility vehicle.  It has good gas mileage.  The only reason I'd get a civic or a corolla is for a sedan which looks more adult like.  The Fit is practical for my needs for the next 3 - 4 years. Ex: Moving, and Road Trips.

I realize that there are some power problems on the highway in the mountains, and with a full load but I a little older now so speed (passing) is not really a concern (most of the time).

Mostly I have a short commute to class 10 min, and grocery shopping.  Everything else is with walking distance, and there are free shuttle buses at my school to get to and from town.

Eh, either or. I'm too busy reading The Bible and signing petitions to drill into Alaskan refuges to notice. That's pretty naive of you not to consider those factors, Cal. I mean, my truck has Samson arms for Christ's sake!

The Bluth Company Stair Car.

This is the best answer so far.  :D :D

I have a 2001 BMW 330xi...  I may have to switch to an SUV though - not sure if my little one can handle the snow and hills of Ithaca.  :P

An Xi will have no problem. You can do it on all-seasons no problem if you're halfway decent at driving in the snow, and if you're not, then put on a set of Bridgestone Blizzak tires and combined with an Xi you'll be unstoppable (if you want to really appreciate an Xi, take it to an autocross on a very rainy day...it's amazing).

This was my project car, aka money pit.  I miss it.  There was nothing like gasing it while going 40mph and still not get traction.

Wow you had two supras eh?  Very nice.  Its hard to find any in decent condition these days...especially after F&F.

Yea I wish i had just bought a supra/awd eclipse instead of building my prelude.  FWD sucked, even with a lsd.  I got out of the "scene" a few years ago and own a reliable car now.  I intend to start back into building cars as a hobby again after ls if i find the time  :D.

Unless there are major differences between the 330xi US version and EU version (there usually are some model discrepancies) it should handle Ithaca very well. I've driven a 330xi a lot in Norway, and even my current beemer handles snow and ice fairly well. And it's a beautiful car, you really should keep it :)

Thanks for the tips, marlinspike and mr. cookie.
I was worried mostly because the car is so low to the ground - I keep picturing it getting stuck in a massive pile of snow.

Hmm, perhaps if they suck at clearing the roads up there. We're pretty skilled at that in Norway, seeing as we have to deal with it half the year around :p

Never happened in Colorado with my Protege. The mountains get WAY more snow here than upstate NY. They will close the road before ground clearance becomes a problem.

I've driven a 330xi a lot in Norway,

I'm guessing then for you the tires aren't Bridgestone Blizzaks but Nokian Hakkapellas (or however they spell it)?
Title: Re: What do you drive?

Not sure what the 330 had, it was my gf's car at the time. I generally drive on Pirelli or Michelin tires. But Blizzaks are heavily used in Norway too, so I expect they are pretty decent on slippery surfaces.
