Title: Columbia Wait Listers Share Your Pain
Post by: LetsGetEm on May 09, 2007, 10:59:11 AM
Deposits at other schools...good ones...BUT I'm still holding out. I wanted to know if anyone else has already heard from Columbia since having been put on the wait list and whether or not anyone has--or will--taken themselves off the WL? Also, does anyone know what the CLS wait list has been like in past years? Good? Bad? Ugly? What are my prospects ?????? I'm going insane! :'( :o :D :-[ :-\

I'm on it, but not staying on.  Moving to Ann Arbor in a couple weeks and excited about it!

I withdrew from the waitlist also.  I've heard they don't take very many people off of it, but you never know -- every cycle is different.  Have you sent them a letter of continued interest?

I'll stay on until early- to mid-June.

Not a peep from Columbia, but I'll stay on for as long as it takes.

If I remember correctly, the initial letter said they wouldn't look at the reserve list until June.

There was some data collected for, I believe, the 1996 application cycle.  It showed that Columbia had a waitlist of 600 people.  It ended up taking 30 people from that waitlist.  Even though that data is from a long time ago, it's definitely not comforting.  I'm having trouble writing a LOCI since the probability of an acceptance seems so small. Regardless, I'll stay on the Columbia waitlist as long as possible.  I'm not too sad about it, I have a 30k a year offer from GWU.  I'm sure the rest of you have similar offers that rock just as much, if not more.

Is everyone who IS staying on the wait list sending letters of continued interest? If so, what on earth are you saying after already having told them that you wish to stay on the list? I figured that they didn't want to be bothered by being innundated with more "crap" from us but I could be mistaken. I was thinking about letting them know about Latin Honors once I have a better idea whether I'll get Summu or Magna but I don't really have anything else to send them. I'm visiting this next weekend...maybe it will inspire something.

Would it be totally inappropriate to send them a letter that specifies WHY I'm so interested in CLS?(highlighting the professors, clinics, and classes of interest)

I sent a second LOCI, but I had a good reason. Something significant in my life recently changed. If you already sent a LOCI and nothing new is going on, I don't think it would add any value to your app. In any case, I'll let you know if this has any impact.

I sent an LOCI, had an employer write a letter and then just today had my mentor for a national fellowship send an additional letter.  perhaps overkill, but i guess i'll be going down in a blaze of glory!  i also plan to make a visit at the end of the month.

I sent an LOCI just last week.  I mentioned a performance-based raise that I recently received here at work and a new service-oriented position I've been selected for in my Mormon congregation.  It's not much, but it's all I have.  I'll probably stay on through the month of June, but I don't want to torture myself into July.

Cool.  There was a lot of GW representation at the beginning of the cycle, but not so much lately.  Happy to see another Colonial :)

I haven't even sent in my LOCI yet!  :P

In regards to the previous request:
http://www.deloggio.com/hearing/waitlist.htm

Keep in mind that this info exists on a website that solicits a law admission help service.

I never read into the data much. It just means that there aren't many schools that pull from Columbia.  I kinda figured that already.

...maybe it's a good sign that the waitlist->acceptance happened so early.  They said they would review as spots materilized.  They also said that this would evaluations would start in June and this is half a month early.  Wishful thinking probably.

Not yet.  When did you get the letter?  Where are you?  You staying on?

I got it yesterday. At first I thought it was a rejection (smaller envelope), but once I held it in my hand I knew it was something MUCH more sinister...another reply mail postcard for the "reserve list."

I live in LA so...I'm really kind of surprised that I got it before anyone else here.

Dinged also.  I'm bummed, but a majority of lawyers I spoke with thought I should go to GWU instead because of the money anyways.

Just got dinged!  A little disappointed, but also relieved to have my future solidly planned.

P.S.  I'm in Utah and I sent a LOCI last month saying I would "unhesitatingly attend."

Wait, they actually ding you, even though you're on the WL?? That sucks! :(

HLS does the same thing.  A friend of mine last year was Def, WL, Rejected.  LSN can't even cover the kinds of stuff some schools do now.  ;)

Also, has anyone heard any more??? ANYTHING?

The original waitlist letter people got placed them on "First Reserve."  In early June, Columbia either rejected people on the list, accepted them, or asked them to stay on a little longer (i.e. Second Reserve).

Hopefully they'll get back to us pretty soon.

Word on the street is that there is a Third Reserve

This is correct; I spoke with CLS a few days ago, and there will be a third and final reserve. Sometime in July people who are on the second reserve will be rejected, accepted, or put on third reserve. CLS will then look at third reserve again in August. Apparently it is not uncommon for CLS to go to the third reserve the day before classes start.

Just called the admissions, they are currently reviewing the reserved applications. The really nice rep also mentioned that a decision would be rendered fairly soon, like by early next week. Hoping for the email ;D

Has anyone who was put on reserve a while back not gotten either a rejection or another reserve notice? I haven't heard from CLS since early May when I was put on reserve. I'm guessing I'd be a rejection, but haven't gotten one yet.

What is it that you're saying in all these phone-calls you're having with CLS staff? Should I be concerned that I haven't added them to my speed dial?

I know we're supposed to show interest but does that mean I have to "make friends" with the office staff?

Seriously, I feel behind the 8-ball with respect to communication with the admissions office.

So CLS sends an email and not a phone call when they take people off the waitlist? Is that what the rep in admissions said?

WHEN WILL THEY START TELLING PEOPLE ANYTHING???

Has ANYONE ON HERE heard from them about the SECOND RESERVE LIST/ACCEPTANCE? My parents want me to make a decision by mid next week but I'm not about to leave that waitlist prematurely.

I called the OoA and they said that, at this point, they'll start just letting people know as spots open up instead of at set dates. That said,Columbia has only TENmore days before I "peace out" off that lovely waitlist of theirs. I can't possibly move across the country (LA to New York) in just a few days.

Do any of you guys have an update? Care to hold my hair as I throw up in frustration?

I called the OoA today and they told me that a decision HAS been rendered on my application and that they're going to scan in the letter and email it to me in PDF form. I can't believe that in as little as 24hours I could know whether I'll be going to CLS in a week!!!

I'm guessing that the fact that they ABSOLUTELY WOULDN'T tell me anything over the phone means that I was REJECTED...right?

Keep your fingers crossed for me guys and gals!

Usually they only do acceptances over email, although it's so close to the start of classes that they might have changed that policy.  Still, it could be a good sign!  Good luck!!
