Title: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!
Post by: quizzle16 on April 19, 2007, 11:36:06 AM
I know there are a bunch of random NYU threads, but I thought it would be nice if everyone hopped on here. Maybe that way there won't be too many threads on housing, etc.

Who else can't wait for August??

I can wait, the idea of 24/7 school isn't all that tempting in itself. That being said, might as well get it over with :)

hahahaha....who ever said there was competition between NYU and CLS.  ;)

See, I don't think like that- I love being a student, and I've missed it for the past few years! Yes, it sucks having to be working late at night and on weekends, but there's something to be said for hitting the books...I might be a dork, but I enjoy it.  :)

That's cool, I like dorky chicks  ;D I do actually enjoy being a student as well, but I'm expecting these 3 years to be really tough, and I also expect that being an English foreign speaker, I will have to add quite a few hours a week to my reading schedule compared to my classmates. But at least I can go to MSG and watch the Knicks every now and then.

Hahaha, I love a guy who loves a dorky chick!!

I feel you on the non-native speaker issue- I am fluent in Spanish, but as a second language, and spent a year studying in Madrid- all of my classes were in Spanish, I wrote a 50 page research paper in Spanish, took all of my exams in Spanish....it was tough, but doable.

And, since you brought up sports teams...anyone know a good place in NY to watch Patriots games? Hopefully I'll find a few diehard Pats fans at NYU.  :)

I think the NYU law library requires an NYU ID

Absolutely untrue.  You can get in using a CLS ID, so long as they're not in the restricted period near finals.

Uhm, I didn't mean here... I meant why you would use the NYU library instead of CLS, as you'd probably have all your studybuddies etc there :) By all means, you're more than welcome in my book, wasn't intended to be offensive at all :)

Is this a CLS/NYU arrangements, or are law school libraries in general open to law students of the NYC-area schools?

I think there are reciprocity arrangements between most schools, but I've only tested it on NYU.

My bf goes to Cardozo and I know he can use the libraries at Fordham, Brooklyn, Columbia, NYU, etc. if he needs to, so I think there's some kind of system.

And I'm excited that people are actually posting in this thread! I know a bunch of people are going to NYU in the fall but they're all over the site.

Hello, longtime lurker here.
I will add myself to the list  ;D

Also, here is the paragraph from the NYU Law website that states access to the library for Fordham and Columbia students.

Note: Columbia Law & Fordham Law students do not need to show this identification.  They are included on the Nellco/RLG Reciprocity Listing, and thus have access through that affiliation.

It pretty much states that Fordham Law and CLS students can enter the library with their student ID. No special forms needed.

How are you out-of-staters moving into D'ag/Mercer? Rental car? Flying with lots of luggage? I think I'll need to buy a lot of luggage for this.

That's a good question - I intend to drive out (I have some small, furniture-like items such as lamps, hamper, large pillows/bedding etc) and I was kind of worried about the masses of people that will probably be trying to unload from the street all on the same day. Does anyone know how/when people normally arrive? would it be worth it to pay to move in a day early?

I was thinking about trying to move in a day early-I'll be coming from California and I figured it would be the best thing to do. Also, I thought I read somewhere on the website that move-in day is August 26, which is also the first day of orientation. Did anyone else see this? If it's true I'll definitely try to move in earlier.

Yes, it's true. Move-In date is August 26, same day as orientation. I believe in order to move in early into D'Ag you'll to have pay between $40-$80 depending on what kind of apartment you are assigned to. I would definitely try to move in earlier, if I was coming all the way from California.

Edit: price is per day

Okay, here's a new question, maybe it will get things started...

What type of law is everyone thinking about?

I'll go first- right now I work in private equity and REITs. I hate PE, but love REIT work, so I'm considering that. Buuuut, I'm also majorly interested in immigration law....

I'm not sure-maybe all the bad experiences people had with the admissions staff were a turn-off, or maybe NYU doesn't attract many LSD addicts?

Anyway, I'm interested in a ton of different types of law-public interest (family law, education stuff), criminal law, intellectual property, mediation, academia... Hopefully, 1L will make things slightly more clear.

And I just recently joined the facebook group, so I'm going to plug that as well (I feel like the Don King of NYU-always promoting  :D ).

Title: Re: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!

I actually was thinking about it. My bf and I are applying to share a studio in Mercer but I hear they're pretty limited, so we're looking at the other boroughs. I know there a few threads around this site about living in NYC and which neighborhoods in Brooklyn are the safest and most student-friendly. I'll try to dig them up. I know about 2/3 of the 1L class tends to live in the dorms but that many students then move out to other areas after their first year because it's cheaper.

I'm not, but from the time I've spent in Brooklyn, it seems to be a pretty nice place to live. If I were going out of manhattan, that'd probably be my choice as well.

I'll be living in Brooklyn, since apartments in lower and mid Manhattan are just too expensive. Also, I'll be moving with my SO and we'll need more space than a studio (been there, done that, just isn't working). 1400-1600 for D'Ag or Mercer is double the rent we pay now  :o Not saying that it'll be that much cheaper in Brooklyn, but as previously mentioned at least we'll have trees  ;D

Do you need to go through brokers for all burroughs? I can't believ eyou have to pay 17% of yearly rent as a fee. That really saddens me.
Title: Re: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!
Post by: YouGuessedIt1985 on April 26, 2007, 12:20:08 AM
I'll be using rent-direct.com, which lists no-fee apartments. It costs about $200 for 60 days of access and sounds a lot better to me than having to pay a broker. Although, I have no idea if I'm going to be able to find an apartment through the service after all. Just hoping for the best.

I'm just sucking it up and living in the dorms for 1L- but my SO is staying in Boston at least for 1L, so I'm not as concerned about sharing a tiny bedroom with another person. If SO was moving, I'd definitely be looking off campus (probably in Brooklyn).

You two don't want to live in the Cardozo housing? I visited a girl who lived in a giant studio that was part of the Cardozo housing. Don't have a clue what she paid, though. Just remember being jealous.

Haha no-Monkey just remembers that my bf goes to Cardozo. Because Cardozo is affiliated with Yeshiva University (which is a Jewish-oriented institution), they don't really let SOs live together unless they're married, and they offer very few studios for couples (way fewer than NYU). I know my bf's roommate this year was trying to live in a studio there with his SO next year, but it seems like they don't really want to accept applications from couples who aren't married. Basically, the odds weren't good over there unless we forged a marriage certificate  :D

That's a shame about the housing, though Brooklyn is a great place to live and considerably cheaper than manhattan.

Yeah I'll see where I end up-if we can get a place in D'ag or Mercer it would be close enough for us both to walk to class (and the housing search would be much easier  :)). At least internet and electricity would be all taken care of for us.

Here's a question for everyone- do you know anything about how much closet/drawer space there is in the dorms? I'm trying to figure out whether summer/winter clothes will all fit...plus, I'm kind of shoe/purse crazy- they take up a lot of room in my closet.

The closet space in D'Ag was pretty small. I don't remember exactly how big/small it was, but it seemed like it was less than 6 feet in width.

:-\ Anyone know if the rooms allow for putting the beds on plastic lifts so that you can store stuff underneath? I know one of the walls has built in shelving, which could be problematic in terms of rearranging furniture.

Hey, are you folks on the listserv?  If so, did you catch that guy sending multiple emails obsessing about the basketball team?  Is one of you that guy?  If so, I would say that you'll probably earn a spot on the team based on zeal alone, so you probably shouldn't lose sleep.

Haha, the unintentional comedy from that listserv is one of the best parts of my work day. It almost scared me away from NYU. I really liked the girl who asked if moving into the dorms a month early would give her enough time to get adjusted to NYC.

The two 3Ls who respond to questions seem to be very cool, and the Facebook group looks like a good representation of NYU students. I like how the top 5 most popular groups among the members include University of Florida sorority groups. That's pretty sweet.

My favorite is...

"I live out of state, and am not sure how I am going to get to NY. How are you getting there?"

Every time this questions pops up in my inbox I want to say CAR or PLANE- do you have a better mode of transportation?? Flying saucer? Intergallactic travel port? Spaceship??

But seriously....I think my new classmates seem like a lot of fun.  :)

I wish the e-mails were more outrageous. For now they are too tame/timid to provide me with much amusement.

Oh, about the rubber supports for the bed: The rooms I went to see didn't have raised beds. I'm not sure if this was because the beds were bolted down (highly unlikely). The people whose rooms I saw were from the city, though, so I think they only brought what they needed and kept the rest of their stuff at home, periodically adjusting what they had at school for the seasons.

The no Mac rule is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of.

Intel based Macs can boot into Windows XP. If they're worried about cheating, it should be easy enough to code in a little extra something into Exam Soft or whatever to detect non Windows OSes and Parallels.

My favorite comedian did exactly what you're proposing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demetri_Martin

Martin attended Yale University and then New York University School of Law on a full scholarship. Despite objections from his family, he dropped out a year before graduation to pursue a career in comedy. Regarding the decision, Martin has said:

Its weird to make a decision where everyone in your life disapproves, pretty vocally and directly. They said, "You've got one year left. Just do it." I had a full scholarship so I didnt have to pay for it. They asked, "Why dont you just get the degree so you can have it?" And I said, "You dont understand. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do and now I know. I have the answer and its dumb to waste any more time."

Title: Re: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!
Post by: jimfoolery on May 07, 2007, 04:29:50 PM
This from Wikipedia: "Although the nickname for the Universitys sports teams has always been The Violets, the need was felt for a mascot to appear at athletic competitions. In the 1980s, the Department of Athletics began using a Bobcat as the mascot. The choice was derived from the abbreviation then being used by the Bobst Library computerized catalog short: Bobcat."

Also: "NYU's sports teams are called the Fighting Violets, the colors being the trademarked hue "NYU Violet" and white; the school mascot is the bobcat."

I'd expect nothing short of such utter mascot confusion, and no fewer than two mascots, from such a fine school.  I will still call myself a Violet, however.

That poking exchange got pretty racy for a while there.  The day's big winner had to have been Matt, though.  Considering how excited he was by the mere prospect of an NYU Law facebook page, I can only imagine his reaction when he found out it was already alive and kicking!

Hey I will also be going to NYU this fall.  I simply cant wait, counting down the weeks.  I hate working, school looks awesome in comparison.  I went to NYU undergrad, so I know that NYU Law should be pretty cool as well.  Also, I took a class with NYU law professor a few years ago, and the amount of reading he assigned was just insane.  The binder of reading materials he gave to us was like 10 15 pounds.  I can only imagine what its going to be like when every class will assign binders like that.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!  ;D

Just got my NetID and email account, and submitted the housing form. I was surprised to get the info already; I was expecting to have to push the May 15 housing deadline. I find it lame that the only personal question they ask for matching you with a roommate is, "Are you neat?" That might be a disaster. Also, their web email is really slow. I wonder if most students forward their NYU mail to a Gmail account or something.

What rooms are you guys preferencing? I went with all D'Ag, doubles then triples.

I went with D'Ag doubles and then triples, listed rooms in Mercer in the "additional info" section, and then basically made a note that if I can't get one of my choices I'm willing to be flexible.

Not sure as to whether I should apply for housing or not. Can I get something cheaper by living out in Jersey by PATH or in Brooklyn by the A train? The average price at D'Ag seems to be around $1300-1400/month. At least they don't require a security deposit and broker fee. :(

JC and Brooklyn would probably both be cheaper, from what I've seen so far. Although I've mostly looked at selling prices, I assume the trends are fairly equal anyway.

They seem cheaper, but there is some overhead associated with living off-campus: broker fees, security deposits, first & last month's rent upfront, cost of buying furniture, having to sublet apt over summer. It also seems like the closer to Manhattan you get the more expensive the housing. I'd hate to have a 30-40 minute commute to the law school.

Theres also a benefit to living 30 minutes away from school. You can get away from it all during your off time. At NYU you are literally a 2 minute walk from class from your dorm room.

Do you already live in New York?

I've been looking at Craig's List to get a feel for the prices. Do all Manhattan apartments require you to have a guarantor with monthly rent x 40 income to co-sign? There are some places on the UES, UWS and E. Village that could be doable. Also looking at Brooklyn...the Heights, Park Slope and W-burg areas seem a bit expensive but closer to Manhattan. Bedstuy is cheaper but I don't really know the area that well.

You can also look at apartments listed on the NYU network if you sign into your NYUHome account. I'm trying to decide whether I need to apply for campus housing by the 15th or not... the cheapest Mercer room (lower level) price looks doable, and I really don't want to live in D'Ag closets.

Not me.  Too expensive, too tiny, and my dog isn't allowed.

Anyone looking for roomies? It's probably not so cheap living off-campus alone.. :)

Seriously. Even though it would be nice to be able to roll out of bed right before class and walk over, it's soo much cheaper to live off campus.

It is... but sometimes you gotta get away. Unlike college dorms you're gonna be sharing dorms with people in your classes. The same people from the same classes over and over all day. You'll be at school over the weekend.

I had that situation for a summer internship. Worked 5 minutes walkin distance away from work living with a co-worker. I would not do that again.

I applied for housing. I don't have the time or energy to navigate the NYC housing market, and am kinda happy that there won't be any travel time involved in getting to school. I commute to work right now using the T, about 30 minutes each way, and it really sucks when I'm pulling a late night and then have to commute home.

I applied for housing too because, like ljg, I don't live anywhere near the city and navigating the housing market from afar seems like a pain. I'd also have the additional expense of having to take time off from work to fly out there and look for a place. Not having to buy furniture is also good.

As for seeing the same people day in and day out, that's why I applied for the "cheaper" Mercer units. The one thing I still have trouble getting over is the dorm feel...

I think 8 months of a "dorm feel" isn't so bad...at least you'll have your own room.  :)

I believe I read somewhere that you'll find out by June 15.

Do you remember what date you had to cancel by to get the deposit back? I may end up canceling if I can find something cheaper yet still convenient...

I agree, but it's also nice when the school you put on your resume has a reputation for attracting distinguished faculty.

Thanks KeNo. I guess if I decide to go I'll just apply for the "better" housing (which is that? D'ag?)

D'Ag seems to be the popular choice, yeah. And from what I've seen, it looks like a pretty nice place. Quite pricey of course, but that's sort of unavoidable in the area. I've seen www.rent-direct.com and www.apts-illustrated.com mentioned elsewhere in terms of off-campus roommate living, but haven't really looked at them personally.

Hey old LSD buddy. Wow, your life for the next 3 years changed pretty quickly.

Go for D'ag. Cost is in the $1300s for a double or triple. 2-minute walk to classes, as opposed to the strenuous 5-minute walk from Mercer. More 1Ls. Cheaper. Just really small rooms. If personal space is a huge issue, go for Mercer; the rooms seem like they're twice as big.

Uh yeah, Mercer it is, then! I'm not decided on anything yet though... in fact, I'm still leaning heavily toward Michigan. But why wait to apply for housing, just in case?

Had NYU not offered me some money, I would've picked Michigan. This was more about them showing me some love than the actual finances involved. When you request merit-based aid, your scholarships from comparable schools will help. However, coming off the waitlist might put you out of the running for that money.

Did OK scholarship-wise, but the CoL and the size of the Mercer and D'ag apartments are... disconcerting. If anyone is looking for a roommate to live in Brooklyn, let me know. Again, I still haven't decided, but I want to get my ducks in a row.

A lot of NYU law students seem to want to project an "I'm-too-cool-for-law-school" image, at least outwardly. That's probably why you don't see them post much on web discussion boards. There's also very little community spirit and whatnot, since everyone is doing their own thing in the city.

I don't know about a higher intellectual plane (though we are awesome, of course)-people just tend to post on here only if they have a specific question, while on other threads posters talk about all sorts of stuff. It would be an interesting study to see if there really are different "posting styles" due to certain personalities attending certain schools, or if certain schools attract people who post on sites like LSD. Interesting thought, though it's probably just a coincidence  :)

Most of us are pretty outgoing, at least the ones who post all the time. I guess we're just cooler.  8)

I don't know how I missed this thread for all this time.

Anyway, I hope that you all join the NYU Law Class of 2010 Pubcrawl group on Facebook.  A few of us met up yesterday at the Belgian Beer Bar, it was really great to meet people who I'll be going to school with.  I was also really impressed by the feeling that I was the least well-read of the three of us.  It is really starting to hit me how smart my classmates are going to be, which I find very exciting.

We might meet up again in July, but I am also organizing a pubcrawl on August 18th for sure.  Hopefully some of you will have arrived in New York by then, I got the impression that a lot of people were moving in that weekend, but maybe that is just the off-campus people?  I think I read somewhere more recently that you were all moving on the 26th?  That doesn't seem to make much sense to me though.  Aren't we supposed to be busy getting orientated?
Title: Re: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!
Post by: jalong on July 05, 2007, 07:05:23 AM
OK, well, maybe I'll throw together an ad hoc pubcrawl on the 26th too, but I can do that in  person I guess.  So I guess you will all figure who I am because I'll be the one bugging you to go to the bar after the orientation.  Are we going to have homework during this orientation?  I have no idea what I'm getting myself into really.
Title: Re: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!
Post by: ljg on July 05, 2007, 07:49:22 AM
Pub crawls sound fun!

And I think so many people are moving in on the 26th because that's the move-in date for the dorms (which is pretty silly, considering that the 26th is also the first day of orientation) and it costs anywhere from $70 to $100 a day to move in early.

I'd be down for a pub crawl on the 26th- although I bet NYU has something planned for us that night, since it's the first day of orientation.

I applied to move in a day early, on the 25th- cause I agree, it's silly to move in on the 26th, deal with all the errands/food shopping, etc., and also do orientation!
Title: Re: NYU Class of 2010-collect yourselves!
Post by: jalong on July 05, 2007, 10:44:36 AM
You're probably right, there will probably be some sort of social function at on the first day.  I think the website said that there would be at least one social thing during orientation.  Eitherway, I think we'll either do that and then head out somewhere with the rest of the nightowls, or make our own orientation event if there is nothing planned.

That is still assuming though, that there is no homework or anything like that.  My inner nerd, then, would wrest control from my inner wino.
