Title: More than 6 schools - Fafsa
Post by: jeff2486 on January 04, 2007, 12:05:09 PM
Is anyone else concerned with the way you add additional schools to fafsa?  It makes me a bit weary to delete the first six schools after it is processed and add another six.  Anyone have experience of this to put me at ease of knowing that all 12 schools will receive my Student Aid Report (SAR).

It works fine.  I did it last year.

So how does this work? I'm a little confused. When you fill it out originally, you put down a maximum of six schools...I get that. But then what happens after you submit it? Do you get it emailed back to you? It's been a little while since I did the FAFSA for UG. When and how do you go in and delete the first six schools and input six more? What is the turnaround time between submitting the first 6 schools and being able to resubmit with the next 6? Is it pretty immediate or are there several days in between? Thanks.

you submit it and then go in and edit the new schools and then submit again.  i seem to remember that the instructions provided were fairly self-evident.

Are we expected to include our parents' info on the FAFSA? I'm currently a senior undergrad and still considered a dependent. I know most schools will see my parents' info on the Need Access form, but I'm wondering whether I should automatically include them on the FAFSA too.

doesn't it say to include it if you are dependant?

From a quick search of some school's fin aid sites, I've found that GW, Temple and Cornell explictly say that parents' info is NOT necessary.

On the FAFSA site, one is considered "independent" if they answer "yes" to the following:

At the beginning of the school year 2007-2008, will you be working on a master's or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, Ph.D., Ed.D., graduate certificate, etc.)?

There's an option for corrections on the FAFSA site...I think that's where we'll go once we have our taxes done. I think the important thing is getting this initial FAFSA out now w/ as accurate estimates as possible.

This sounds like a good plan. I would'nt have thought of submitting and resubmitting in that way. But what I want to know is, can you immidiately change the names of the schools and resubmit, or do you have to wait for a certain amount of time.

If you do have to wait for a certain amount of time, how long?

You need to wait for it to be processed. It said it would take a few days, but mine was processed in less than 24 hours. I immediately deleted the 6 schools I had listed the first time, added 6 more, and submitted that (I am sending it to 12 total). When I have exact numbers, I will need to send in two separate corrections to each set of schools.

At one point I was told that simply listing a school on your FAFSA application does not mean the school will automatically be sent your SAR.  They have to request your SAR before you take them off your list.  I do not believe this to be true.  Can anyone confirm?

FAQ certainly makes it sound like they are automatically sent in the info

I contacted one of my schools to check on the status of my application.  I asked if they had received my SAR (2 weeks passed since I filed the FAFSA). Their response: "The main campus office has not begun the process of downloading FAFSA information for 2007-2008; check back in a couple of weeks."

Their response lends support to the idea that the school does not automatically recieve your SAR when you submit the FAFSA.  Anyone else have any firsthand info?

More quotes from the FAFSA website:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/faq006.htm
"Any school(s) you have listed on your FAFSA can request a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR) electronically once your application has been processed."

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/faq014.htm
"If I want to apply to more than six schools, what do I do?
Submit your application with the first six schools listed. After your application is processed and you receive your Student Aid Report (SAR), go to the FAFSA on the Web home page and select "Make Corrections to a Processed Application" under the FAFSA Follow-up sections. Add up to six additional schoools on your application.
Note: You may have to remove some schools from your application to add new ones."

The "note" is very strange.

The University of Arizona seems to indicate that schools will not get your SAR if you remove the school and the schools hasn't obtained your SAR yet.

http://www.law.arizona.edu/Finaid/howtoapply.htm
"File an online correction adding The University of Arizona to numbers 86 to 96 of the FAFSA if the institution is not already listed. Please assure that the school being removed has already received your information."

EDIT:
Ok, I finally got through to a customer service rep at the Federal Student Aid processing center, and the rep told me that you don't have to worry about schools not receiving your FAFSA if you remove the first six schools. Even though you don't see them online, they are there.  Your list of schools is stored in a database, and each school then goes to the website and downloads your SAR at its leisure.

Another school responded to my question about whether or not they received my SAR.  Here is their response:

"Hello. You can replace information once a school has recieved your
FAFSA. I just checked and as of today we do not have your FAFSA, we pull
them in every week and will do so again tomorrow Tuesday the 23rd.
Once we have your info it will be safe to take the code off. Thanks and
have a nice day."

So, who doesn't know how FAFSA works - the Federal Student Aid customer service rep or the schools?  Has anyone else contacted their schools to check on status and had a school say something consistent with the FSA customer service rep?

Another school responded:

"You need to leave *school name* on your list until the first part of Feb.  If you want to e-mail me then after Feb. 10th I can check and make sure *school name* has your information and then you can remove *school name*."

BU was in my first round of 6 and I asked them if they have my SAR, they confirmed that they do.  Haven't checked anyone from the second 6 but I assume since they are what actually appears when I look online they will not be a problem.

Does anyone other than me think Financial Aid applications aresignificantly worse than actual law school applications?

I just got my SAR -- how long should I wait before calling my schools to see if the got my infor so I can add another six schools?  A week?

According to the Federal Student Aid processing center, you don't even need to wait 5 minutes.

Sorry, maybe I was too subtle. I was just making a SARS joke.

When SARS happened in 2003 (or whenever) i was watching the news and the reporter was talking about the possible epidemic.  and then they zoomed out and showed the hospital next to Cal that's in downtown.  that was nice of them.

Please reassure me here, and THANK YOU for whomever started this thread and the subsequent respondents for the great info I've learned thus far.

My query -- Okay, I'm retarded so bear with me. I filled out my FAFSA on the Web Saturday. Today, I got this email...

"Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been processed and the data will be made available to the school(s) listed on your FAFSA.  The financial aid office at your school will contact you if additional information is required.

Your Student Aid Report (SAR), which contains a summary of your FAFSA information, is now available for you online.  Review your SAR as soon as possible.  Additional information or corrections may be needed.

Use the link below to view your SAR.  You can select the link or copy the entire link and paste it into the address or location line of your Web browser.  Make sure you copy and paste the entire link; it may appear on multiple lines."

--

Am I now golden to go ahead and delete those six schools and add six more?

Are you sure?

I mean, really sure 'cause I called their customer support and and he was kind of cryptic?

Thanks--mean it.

Can someone walk me through how I can now see my two different versions on FAFSA's website? I believe I did it correctly, but want to confirm from a second source before proceeding.

Does this mean I did it correctly --

I can go to FAFSA.ed.gov, click on option 3, click "View or Print your SAR," enter all the confidential sign-in info, THEN I get to the "Transactions" page, where it says ...

"Transactions
Below is a list of the 2007-2008 transactions we have processed for you at the U.S. Department of Education as of 02/07/2007. You can select any of the transaction numbers to view the complete details for that transaction."

And here I can see ....
"Transaction Number Processed Date Expected Family
Contribution (EFC) Transaction Source
02 02/07/2007 51700 Corrections on the Web
01 02/05/2007 51700 FAFSA on the Web"

Is this what you guys are describing as being able to go back and see the different versions on-line after the fact?

Did I do this correctly?

Well, how long did you wait for it to process?  I did it that Saturday night and didn't get an email about the SARS until Monday or Tuesday ... but I called Sunday and the lady said it takes 3-5 days before you can edit schools ... which is probably covering their butts a little, but still.
