Title: List your 2 most coveted schools
Post by: StudentUVA on August 30, 2006, 11:37:21 AM
We all know that there are a lot of law school rankings out there. But what is your own personal preference? Where would you like to go if you got accepted, and under what conditions. Here is a list of my two most wanted schools:

1) Columbia + Hamilton Scholarship. For me this combination would beat any law school in the country, even Yale and Harvard. Top 5 school for free is basically the best outcome that I could imagine.
2) Michigan + Darrow Scholarship. Once again, going to a top ten law school for free beats Yale and Harvard for me.

I would probably attend Berkeley with a small scholarship over many higher schools, because I'm from California. YSH would be difficult to turn down at any price, however, simply because of the academic and professional opportunities.

Columbia and NYU because they're top schools in NYC and I am not moving.  There is a combination of circumstances that might draw me to some lower-ranked schools, but I don't want to talk about it right now :P

Stanford and Cal...if I got into either, I think I'd poop my pants.

Hahaha well, that's one way to put it.  I think mine would be Yale and UChicago.

Stanford and Yale - I think I might faint, definitely cry with happiness.

But a nice scholarship from another slightly lower-ranked school could sway me for sure.

USC or USD....if i get into USC, i will do more than poop my pants. if i get into USD, i will be quite happy.

1. UPenn(amazing school, close enough to fam and friends)
2. Georgetown(great school, love the location and its not too far away)

Probably: Fordham(always wanted to live in New York prob my best shot)/ Temple(close to home but not nearly as good as Penn but i wouldnt mind staying in Philly)

If i get into UPENN, I will break out into dance no matter where im at, but sadly i probably wont have the joy of making a fool of myself.

we approve of the choices listed by:

lonewolf (specifically, columbia)
orangie (specifically, columbia)
loluna (specifically, columbia)

the following posters are on thin ice with us:

paigeroo (for not listing columbia)
groundhog (for not listing columbia)

we don't approve of the choices made by the other posters, but we don't know them well enough for them to be on thin ice with us.

I like Chicago and NYU.  Eat it.

what are you, Halfie II?

may you get your hangover LSAT.

nah, you seem like a nice guy.

may you get into columbia, get a hamilton, then take the money so that i can rub it in your face.

It's even better to get the Hamilton and choose to go to a decent school instead.  That really pisses him off.

you're assuming he would get into yale?

He got the Peter J Sharp, not the Hamilton.  Honestly, I don't think it would have changed my mind, but it might have.  Then again, it is interest-specific and if that's your interest than there really is no question that Columbia is the right place for you.

well yes, i know he got the sharp.  i was talking about turning down yale in general.

Stanford

NYU/Chicago tie (cheap, i know)

Pretty vanilla "dream schools", and even though I still have a little while before I take the LSAT and start applying, I'm aiming high.

St Johns
Brooklyn

They seem way cooler than the higher ranked schools.  Brooklyn's package was so freaking awesome.  St. John's is so pretty.  And they offer merit money, which I really, really want.

1) NYU + Furman scholarship.
2) Yale

If it isn't obvious I have some interest in academia and these appear to be the two best shots at getting a position.  Also, I intend to focus on international and comparative law and NYU is number 1 in that area hence my desire to go there first.

Yawn.  Don't you prestigious people ever tire of debating the insignificant differences between top 5 schools?

Seriously.  I got home and saw a big package and was like wow someone loves me and guess what, it was Brooklyn Law School.  I'm keeping that cool folder thingamajig.

1) NYU + Furman scholarship.
2) Yale

I don't think it's an insignificant difference for academia.  I also don't think this point is at all contested, so I suspect "dmreust" is new to the process and misinformed.

Sure if you're looking at it by volume or whatever, but I don't think the difference between them is as important as the caliber of student, their note, interests, prior academic background and area of interest, etc.

But I'm not an expert on that.  And I don't like following the xoxo/lsd credited answers for school choices just to follow them or because of statistics or something rational.

Na, I know that both of those schools are typically considered better for academia.  However, the Furman scholarship is intended to be a "fast track" to legal academia.  It places the student alongside the teachers and then also allows you access to teaching seminars etc.  That is why I would probably put that as my #1 choice.  You can read more about the Furman scholarship here http://www.law.nyu.edu/depts/admissions/ScholarAcademics/Academics/Furman/Index.html (http://www.law.nyu.edu/depts/admissions/ScholarAcademics/Academics/Furman/Index.html).  I think it is typically viewed as an automatic in in regard to the field of academia.  Oh, and the only reason I know about it is because of this board.  I love this thing.  Thanks for the concern that I might be mixed up though.

Title: Re: List your 2 most coveted schools
Post by: Towelie on September 18, 2006, 06:52:07 PM
I picked G'Town because it's the last of the T14 schools.  God, you're so high sometimes  ::)

I don't think that contracts are that different at a higher ranked school than they are at a lower ranked school.  People like Anna Ivey have pretty much said as much, and I think LSAC makes the same point in their own guide.

Is there a difference between Thomas Jefferson and Harvard?  Yes, but those are pretty extreme examples.  Do you think you'll be stupider (all jokes aside) graduating from Minnesota than will someone graduating from a "better" school?  Probably not.

The differences lay not with what you are taught, but rather your career options when graduating from a school. Assuming you will be around the middle of the class, the job opportunities are vastly different comming from Minnesota than a "better" school. Hell, even comming from UCLA compared to a "better" school and Georgetown compared to a "better" school.. and so up the ladder it goes.

And, although contracts may be the same wherever you go, don't forget that half your learning is through your classmates, thanks to the socratic method. How intelligent your fellow classmates are is, thus, important.

I would have to go with:

2)Michigan with a Darrow

3)Harvard

Of those three (I know it said two, but I can't narrow it down to that) I really don't know which I would choose given the opportunity (which is very unlikely).

1. Yale/Harvard - grouping these together since they would both be equally awesome and I have a -1% chance at going to these

2. Georgetown - I might have a 2% chance at the PT program depending on my LSAT score so I'm going to go ahead and apply!

Most likely I will end up at a TTT  :-[

We all know that there are a lot of law school rankings out there. But what is your own personal preference? Where would you like to go if you got accepted, and under what conditions. Here is a list of my two most wanted schools:

1) Columbia + Hamilton Scholarship. For me this combination would beat any law school in the country, even Yale and Harvard. Top 5 school for free is basically the best outcome that I could imagine.
2) Michigan + Darrow Scholarship. Once again, going to a top ten law school for free beats Yale and Harvard for me.

1.  Virginia + a nice amount of money

2.  Chicago + some money

Though I agree that Columbia + Hamilton is absolutely the best thing anyone could get, whether they realize it or not.  I wouldn't think twice about taking that over Yale.

I agree- I love Michigan. Apparently I can get resident status because my grandparents live there? I have no idea, but if so, the reduced tuition would be a really good incentive. Unless Toby calls. TOBY CALL ME!!!!

I am just scared of snow.

I don't know what I'll do if it comes down between Michigan and UVa.  Michigan really is better for the areas I'm interested in, but then, my plans are subject to change.  But I am a Southern gal, and UVa is in the heart of Presbyterian country, too.  I don't think I could go wrong either way.

Which is why I'll be a $ whore.

1.  From LSN, UVA seems pretty consistent about shelling out serious dough for most people in our range.

2.  I don't know that I'd have the guts to email them about what the other had offered, but considered that the schools are pretty equivalent, choosing the one that offers more is reasonable, I think.

Well, it would only save me money if I had a preference.  I could just as easily choose the one that offered more and not bother asking the other to match.

Plus, it's an excuse to find that special someone to cuddle up with, lol.

I think we all know where mpark's mind is!

And yes, bidding war is one possibility.  But don't you think UVA would only shell out serious dough for an acceptance from CCN?  Plus I'm not a good bluffer.   :-\

Where's my mind? And yes, Hank, why don't you have AIM? Or do you?

also in case you missed it, hank and britomart have already agreed that all three of you will come to CLS in the fall.

I didn't apply to Michigan.  I do not covet you, Michigan.  Go with Brito instead!  She is a star!

Yeah, what's the deal with that, Hank? And no Boalt either?

I figured I would rather go to Virginia than either of those schools and that I would probably get into Virginia.

You're a lock for Virginia Hank, definitely. Personally, I would choose Michigan over Virginia, I think - you get used to the snow after awhile. Plus, it's an excuse to find that special someone to cuddle up with, lol.  Besides that, though, I like the north

same, I find the south to be overrated (no offense :))

that said, I've applied to both Mich and UVa but after hearing some stories about racism at UVa I'm beginning to wonder  :(

But I would like to get into both and decide from the ASWs.

How would a Michigan 2L know what happens at UVA?  And seriously, there are probably racist incidents at most major schools.  In fact, there has been lots of evidence that schools that go to great lengths to promote diversity, understanding, etc. actually incite more of these lunatics to paint statues, pass out flyers, etc.

Ok, I'm late to the game and I'm totally about to break the rules too:

The school I most COVET, is one that I will never attend, and in fact, didn't even apply to: YALE. Sadly, I'm not yet able to delude myself into believing that I can in-fact attend Yale.

Of the schools I actually DID apply to, I am currently focusing most of my good vibes on the following three:
1) Notre Dame (Long Shot)
2) Cornell (Even longer shot)
3) William and Mary (Not Quite as long/Fee Waiver'd/We'll See).

Oh, and I don't know about you guys, but I dig the south.

Probably too much! And I feel like I should send more :(

I really want a miracle-acceptance to Penn... In all honesty, I liked Penn so much when I visited, that  even if I had Yale-like numbers it would probably still be my first choice. I don't have those numbers, however. Penn really seems like a perfect fit to my goals and personality -- and I LOVE the location. Philly is a perfect city for me to go to school in.
