Yeah. I am SO psyched to be in westwood next year. Lots of my friends will be in various grad programs there, so I expect to have a great mix of old + new people to hang out with. I'm really surprised that there's a marked lack of UCLA enthusiasm on these boards, especially compared to USC.

Can't wait to start at UCLA, though it's kinda hard looking for housing from the UK. Congrats to all of you.

Me too :) !
I already live in LA, and I love it.  So welcome! Also, I didn't know much about applying to law school, so I was really lucky wind up in the right place.  The more I hear about UCLA's law school, the more I am excited to be going there.

is anyone going to try living at weyburn?  how early do i need to start looking for a place to live?  i was originally thinking around july when i actually go to la, but maybe i should start earlier than that?  i'd hate to fly out to la for a weekend just to go apt-hunting though

I don't know if it's worth a plane trip, but if you are applying for student housing you might want to check them out because there is a pretty big difference between the types of units, neighborhoods, and distance from school.

I'm 99% sure that I'll be going to UCLA as well in the fall.  I submitted my housing application to Weyburn yesterday.  I hope that my being in the Northeast will help me get housing.  Being NYC born and bred, I'm a non-driver, so housing close to campus would be important.

shae, have you seen this:

To assist admitted and current law students looking for a roommate within the law school community, the law school is providing a secure site where law students may exchange information.  If you are interested in participating, please click here.

from this website: http://www.law.ucla.edu/home/index.asp?page=1223

although, when i click on the "here" it tells me that i'm not authorized to view the page.  you could probably call the admissions office and see what's up.

I was kind of wishy-washy about UCLA until I started reading your posts, Shae.  Thanks for your enthusiasm!  You've totally psyched me up!  But do you really want to live with another UCLA law student?  I've heard so many other law students advise against this sort of thing.  Even at UCLA where the student body may be slightly more laid-back, you still might want your home to be your refuge from the stressful law student community.  But, as an LA native, I might be taking for granted my familiarity with the city as well as my social netword already in place.

Anyway, I look forward to meeting all of you!!!!

Just wait till your first snow storm and having to dig your car out of 6 feet of snow. Want to live on the East Coast, better get some of these words into your vocabulary:

flurry
layering
black ice
frost bite
GoreTex

hah, that makes so much more sense, thx.

any insight into the Community Housing Office??  I've been trying to check out the online database there and using my UID and PIN to sign into the UCLA Students section, but when I sign on, it tells me that I'm currently not a student.  I called the office and they told me that no access until I'm officially registered for classes.  As an admitted student, I have to fill out this form and pay 25 bucks to get access.  i know that's not that much, but still, wtf?  have other ppl been able to use that?

The Community Housing Office handles  university owned apartments, dorms, and I think even the Co-Ops.  At this point, I would think the Law School admissions Office would take care of us, so I would call Admissions Office first to see what they say.

Got waitlisted last week at UCLA...but I am going to wait it out to the bitter end. I own a home in San Diego and my wife and daughter are staying in SD for work and school respectively. UCLA is the only top-notch law school within a two hour radius. I'm in at few other schools but at this point UCLA is the only realistic practical option for me considering my personal circumstances

USD was not a choice? Amazing.  I'm 65 miles away from UCLA and will be Vanpooling.

USD is a great school. However, I'm looking for something with a more national reputation i.e. a more portable degree.

Good luck -- and do hang in there, b/c I know at least five people who got in off the waitlist after the first day of orientation!  I think that b/c UCLA does not require a seat deposit, people end up hanging around in the class longer and they end up offering more spots off the waitlists than some other schools do...  I hope it works out for you.

Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to adm day or any of the regional dinners.  I would still love to meet some future classmates before classes begin in fall.  I live in the SF bay area.  Is anyone who lives in the bay area interested in organizing/coming to a get together for class of 2009 peeps?  We could all meet up for happy hour somewhere in SF?

Don't worry about meeting new folks.  When they divide the clas into sections you will get to know people plenty well.  It's going to be like HS all over again.  Chances are the friends you make initially are not going to be the ones you hang with, but that is just the way human nature works.

BTW, at the open house, people were not very talkative about themselves.  I can tell most people were trying to size up their competitions.  It was obvious enough that my wife felt that vibe as well.  There were definitely no one there bragging about a PhD or 180 LSAT score.

That's too bad. Not that anyone there would be bragging about a PhD, or be going to UCLA if they had a 180. :P Were people just nervous, or was it gunnerish? It's possible that law students are *gasp* awkward. Or manipulative, I dunno. I never got the competitive ethos that tries to screw other people--unless you can hose more than 70 or 80 percent of your section on something, there's no guarantee that'll get you an A...

So i'm dropping by the campus this weekend since i'm driving to studio city anyway, and have just thought about merchandising. Coming from a small LAC, the webstore made me feel like the tiniest of cogs in a giant degree mill. A few questions:

I know USAS has a campaign about the UC system not verifying their contractors for apparel, but does anyone know of any specific allegations of abuse?

I debated ordering a UCLA law hoodie. My girlfriend pointed out this would make me the biggest feminine hygiene product on the planet, and to just get a UCLA one. I'm prone to agree, but i'm interested in other's thoughts.

Given how evil maquiladoras are, not to mention the slave labor sweatshops hidden in LA county, i'm really tempted to just do my own logo on an American Apparel t-shirt. I'd just have to not wear it around their licensing department.

I'm going to break the mold a bit - I LOVE both NYC and LA!

Westwood is really beautiful... a college-town feel but with lovely stores and restaurants, palm trees everywhere... of course sunshine.  Tree-covered streets full of lovely houses give it a very neighborhood-esque atmosphere.  You don't feel like you're in a big city in the bad ways, but of course you still have all the conveniences of a large metropolis.

I've found UCLA's part of LA to be really... perfect.  Beautiful Santa Monica is only a short drive away...  oh instead of carrying on rambling, here are some pictures I've taken of Westwood/the law school/Santa Monica/PCH.  Ignore my stupid captions.   ;)

Try the east side of campus, along Hilgard.  It's closer to the law school and farther from the frat houses.  I think it's all pretty expensive though.

Title: Re: OFFICIAL UCLA C/O 2009 THREAD!

Proximity, and cost given proximity, but proximity equals convenience. For me, paying 950 at weyburn instead of 1200 for a single/studio that's private is a big deal, and it means more $ for me because i'm trying to avoid bringing a car for 1L.

The rooms are small, but it seems to be a really advantageous trade-off given the other options of distance, cost and space that people contend with.

I was wondering about the Weyburn status, too, so I emailed the UCLA housing office... they said:

---------------

Thank you for using Ask Housing.

The Weyburn lottery pool consists of 570 applicants (and is growing). If you weren't guaranteed housing by the Graduate Department. You are consider a Lottery applicants. A Lottery applicants are not guaranteed housing. Housing is offered to lottery applicants based on space availability. A limited number of lottery applicants are offered housing each academic year. Housing offer or wait list status will be e-mailed to lottery applicants by August.

Thank you,

Jay J.
UCLA Housing Services

----------

I don't know how many spots are available, but this email made me feel like I should start thinking of alternatives.  The thing is, when I had talked to an admissions officer back in March, they made it sound like I (not just me but this year's incoming law students) don't have to worry about securing on-campus housing.

A bit confusing... wish we could know by June.  If anyone else has any other info, I'd be interested to know :)

Come on guys, when has UCLA ever given us a definite date when something would be done and then actually followed through by that date?  :)
I have some sympathy though, because I work in a school's administration, and I try to avoid telling anyone when anything will be done unless I can really guarantee results (which is rare).  If you say something will be done by a certain time and then you can't do it, everyone just jumps on you "but you said..."

My friend who is going to UCLA med school just found out that she got a studio in Weyburn.  Sad considering we applied to live together.  I still havent heard anything, has anyone else?!?  She got some confirmation email and checked her status on the housing application website. :)

Haven't heard anything yet and I sent in all my stuff last month. I just called the office to ask about it since I am also from the East Coast and would need to make arrangements to get myself (and all my belongings) across the country. The woman over the phone told me that if anything, I should hear in June if there are available spots open since I am a lottery applicant and am not guaranteed housing. Currently all guaranteed housing individuals are being made offers and they are waiting to hear back from them.

Well, here's to hoping we hear back soon.

lawschool09, are med school students guaranteed on-campus housing?

i just spoke with my friend and it seems that first year med students are guaranteed housing.  this is kind of ridiculous...they wont send us a notice if we are denied housing?  how are we supposed to know if we should start looking for an apartment?  between not hearing about scholarship info, the public interest program, and now housing im starting to get really pissed off at this school.  lol.

Tell me about it!  I turned in my forms proving my resident status BY HAND over three weeks ago, and nothing has been processed.  I was told my status should appear on ursa within 7-10 days.  When I finally got through to someone at the student affairs office (I called multiple times a day for three days before I could get a human voice) I was given some BS reason for why my forms had not yet been processed and why my resident status remains "incomplete."  All she could tell me was that she'll "look into it."  I have to call back in some indeterminate amount of time to check up on this.  Hopefully they'll get their act together before first fees are due.  Man, I'm so friggin sick of dealing with the beauracracy that is the UC system.  Anyone else encounter similar problems?

Merit scholarship students are guaranteed housing in Weyburn, a sort of extra incentive for them to choose UCLA.

Pcv is right, it was part of my scholarship.  It's really the best part of the offer.

What a way to make your stressed-out future classmates hate you.  I hate you already  ;) and I don't even need housing.

I heard from some friends who are grad students there that it is pretty hard to get student housing.  Some were on the waiting list for about 9 months.  I guess it depends what is available.  Why does everyone want to live at Weyburn so much?

Howdy everyone,
What do you all think about the UCHA (University Cooperative Housing Association)? I have been looking for housing around UCLA, and it seems like UCHA offers the most bang for the buck. Yes, you have to do four hours of chores a week and probably live in a double or triple. But it is awfully close to the law school (less than a mile away) and is unbelievably cheap? Are there any other future UCLA law students out there who are seriously considering living there? Or is it just too good to be true?

Harold

It is the cheapest housing around, and it includes food, but I would not recommend living there unless you have seen it first.  From what I hear, the conditions pretty bad sometimes.  Also, it is crowded and noisy.  It tends to attract people who are on study abroad and lots of other interesting people who may be fun, but probably won't be a good influence on your studies  ;)  So go for it if you like, but take a tour or something first!

Title: Re: OFFICIAL UCLA C/O 2009 THREAD!

A three person flop house? I think that might be a bit of a stretch... Look, I plan to do most of my studying in the law school library. Certainly there has to be at least one or two other law school students or grad students interested in living there. Why couldn't we share a room and do well in law school? Is it really that unthinkable?

Yeah, I looked at the website when I was flipping out about paying around $1000 for an apartment. Having to live with 3 people who you don't know seems like too big a risk. The outside of the one I saw, Hardman-Hansen is really nicely painted in bright colors. It is also designed elegantly with a looming presence and many straight lines, much like a late-eighties slum on the outskirts of bratislava.

It looks like a lot of fun, but getting along with one roommate is tricky enough. The odds of two are worse. (P(two awesome roommates) = .X * .X = N, where X is the chance of finding a good roommate and of course N < X).
If they're UG or getting their english PhDs, they could be on very different schedules and levels of stress.

Still, I think I would go for it if I didn't have a GF who I like to make out with in the privacy of my own home once in a while. Though I suppose you could bring dates back to the library, too... :)

I'm only on UCLA's waitlist - but just letting you know, I sympathize with y'all on housing!  Aaaaahhh!!!! So stressful. I'm in Orange County at the moment with a great two bedroom, two bath, two story, high beam condo - walking distance to the beach for only $1,350/mo - and need to get back up to L.A. for Pepperdine or UCLA - and everything around 1K up there is horrid - and definitely not big enough for my dog, and three cats.  You're lucky to get a studio for that price near UCLA or Malibu.  If anyone finds something great - let us know how you did it - thanks!  :-* :-* :-*  And congrats to you for getting IN!  ;)

Thanks :)

Hi, I know this is late but I was wondering about the quality of Rose Avenue, Venice/Barry apts, and Keystone/Menton apts. For anyone that has been to UCLA, are those places a-ok?

Oh, and if anyone needs a roommate, I'm still avaliable  :D. I'm super-clean, I love to eat, I can be very quite if need be. I switch from being introverted to extroverted--depending on the enviornment, so if anything, it would be interesting. I would prefer to live with a fellow incoming law student who is is a neat freak as well. Oh, and I have a car--positives all around, right?

I called a month ago and the office said sometime around the end of June.  I know it's kind of late, but I wouldn't worry the loans, since in the packet that was sent out, it listed mid-August (8/11 I think) as the date the loan money would even be distributed to your URSA account.

Thanks for all your replies. I also received the waitlist email yesterday. I guess I should start looking around although I don't think I will be able to make it out to Cali till late July. Like some of you, I'm on the East Coast so it's not going to be easy to look for housing while 3000 miles away.

Anyone thinking of calling housing to ask about waitlist notifications? I can't seem to find the # for housing on the website other than the "Ask Housing" forum site.

I think they don't list a number on purpose, so that they don't have to field calls from hundreds of people (note to UCLA: that's poor customer service).  I pretty much assume that I won't get off the waitlist and if/when I do, I'll probably already have signed a lease and paid a deposit already.  Anyway, it seems that a bunch of us East Coasters will be frantically looking for a place to live, getting furniture, and getting used to the laid back So-Cal lifestyle come July.

UCLA does financial aid stuff later than a lot of other schools.  I don't think I did any financial aid stuff last year until July.  Basically, the thing to keep in mind when dealing with UCLA is that if you haven't heard anything yet, probably nobody else has either (like last year my whole section got our class lists a week after they said we would).  It can be really frustrating but easier if you know it's just sort of the way that they operate.  And for whatever reason there are very few bureaucratic hassles once you actually are in school, it's just getting ready for 1L that seems painful.

Also if you guys have any questions about neighborhoods to live in, etc. or other UCLA questions I am happy to try to answer them.

Are secondary journals worth the time and effort involved? UCLA really pushes that Critical Race Studies stuff and the ...and Policy thing (is it a conscious reformulation of X and Economics?) I am unclear about what the strongest specialties UCLA has. They just seem generally strong but not spectacular in most fields..

I think it's definitely worth it to do a journal your 1L year.  There are a good number of secondary journals though I don't really have a sense that one is considered more prestigious or strong than the others (maybe the Entertainment Law Journal?)  so I think you should just join whichever one you are most interested in.  I think it's nice that UCLA lets 1L's be involved in journals, because it's good preparation for trying out for law review if you want to do that, and if you don't make law review or don't want to do it, then you can get a position on an editorial board your 2L year.

For 1L's, some journals require production tests (basically having you bluebook a bunch of citations) and some are just open so that if you want to join the staff you can.

Journal involvement as a 1L isn't super intense.  You'll probably get one cite checking assignment per semester, and you'll probably be able to do it within a couple days to a week depending on how hairy the assignment is.

I'm not in PILP but I have a couple friends in the program.  I am not really sure about the funding situation, however the program seems well run and definitely very cohesive.  I had a bit of contact with Cathy Mayorkas (PILP director) this year b/c of some volunteer work, and she's super nice and helpful.

For 3Ls to find the cute 1Ls?   ;)

Actually, from all the stories I hear from 1L's, it's the other way around. The cute 1L will try to lure a 2L or 3L (usually 2L) in the hopes of getting an easy ride through law school. IMO, they (meaning the storytellers) seem really bitter. And I don't blame them! I'd be bitter too. I can't use my manly charms the same way a girl can use her womanly charms  >:( ::pouts::

There is the FAFSA letter they mailed out a while back listing student/family contributions and aid eligible.  We are all still waiting for the Financial Aid Notification letter to lists what you get.  They have not done the FAN letters yet, as far as I know -- it was supposed to have been the end of June, but who knows..

Heidi Fleiss is from Beverly Hills (practically next door to campus), maybe you can find her and get hooked up?  ;D

Nah, I don't go for those sort of ladies. Besides, would you want to be the guy AFTER Charlie Sheen? I sure wouldn't. IMO, if there's ever a live action version of Family Guy, Charlie Sheen would be a shoe in for the role of Quagmire. Giggity, giggity, giggity!  ;)

This is the response I got when I emailed the financial aid office.

Financial Aid Notifications (FAN's) for 2006-2007 will be sent out through July. You may view and accept your eFAN at https://www.fao.ucla.edu/myfao/. Please note that the only information on the FAN (outside of the Need Access grant and merit-based aid, which you should already know by then) is regarding loans. Please also note that we will be sure to provide you with enough federal and private loans to cover the cost of attendance (this includes living expenses, tuition, books etc.). The amount of federals loans you receive is generally the same across all schools, including UCLA School of Law. You will be offered at least $18,500 in federal Stafford loans (includes both subsidized and unsubsidized).

Application instructions in short:

Federal Loans:

1.File a FAFSA no later than March 2, 2005.  You can do so by visiting       www.fafsa.ed.gov.  UCLA’s School Code is 001315.

2.Review and accept any offered federal loans you wish to receive on your FAN in order for them to be processed by the Financial Aid Office.

3.Complete the mandatory online entrance session at   www.accessgroup.org/counseling

Private Loans:

1.Review and accept any offered private loans you wish to receive on your FAN in order for them to be processed by the Financial Aid Office.

2.Compare the lenders and apply at www.collegelenderlist.com

Unless they changed from last year, UCLA actually doesn't require a seat deposit.  They have a really strict orientation policy where if you don't show up to the first day of orientation (which I believe is August 18) you are booted from the class.  So, a good number of people get in off the waitlist on the first day of orientation.  If you're really interested in UCLA I suggest you wait out the waitlist until then!  (I know, it's a pain)

Hey, for those of you that know, what is the dominant computer choice among UCLA Law students? Apparantly UCLA now allows macs to be used for exams so I'm reconsidering the Macbook--along with a few other laptops.

Am I doing something wrong... anybody else finding that UCLA's "special offers" for purchasing a laptop a bit unimpressive?

I configured 2 identical systems from Dell side-by-side in 2 browsers, one through Dell's main page and the other through the Dell University site (via UCLA & KSTData). The university discount price was actually higher than the one offered through Dell's generic "discount" (by about $59, including tax & shipping).

---------------------------------------------------------------

Really?  Two weeks ago I spoke to someone from the IT dept. at the law school and he told me that they aren't allowing the macbooks until the exam software company officially changed their position on macs.  Where did you hear this?  I thought that the offer on the Dell Latitude 13 inch notebook was pretty good.

First, check out this link: http://www.lawschooldiscussion.org/prelaw/index.php/topic,67051.0.html

Then, check out this link: http://www.maclawstudents.com/exam-software/index.php

The first link states that ExamSoft allows Macs and the second link has an incoming student stating that the IT department now allows macs.

Oh, and BTW, Dells don't produce 13 inch laptops. They do have the 12 inch XPS M1210 if that's what you are talking about.
Title: Re: OFFICIAL UCLA C/O 2009 THREAD!
Post by: lawschool09 on July 10, 2006, 10:37:30 PM
Ah, I spoke with them at the end of June.  They must have recently changed their policy...guess I just screwed myself out of getting a macbook.  As for the dell, I was talking about the 12 inch Latitude X1.  I'm not really a PC user, but the computer is much lighter than my old powerbook.  I think that this new dell is only 2.5 lbs.  For 99 bucks, you can get accident coverage in case you drop it and I think that the service plan includes on site service to your apartment/dorm.

On the topic of computers, does anybody know what we have to do to get extra loans for the computer?  There is a financial aid reevaluation form for it on the financial aid website, but does anyone know how long it takes for this process to happen once we are offered our package?  Someone in financial aid a while ago just told me to keep my receipts and that she couldnt tell me anything specific until aid packages were finalized in July.

hi guys! i'm class of '08 too but it turns out i'm going to be a lawyering skills writing advisor this year so i might actually get to meet some of you at orientation.  couple of thoughts:

1) a guy in my section got in off the waitlist a day or two before orientation so those of you still waiting, don't give up.
2) ucla financial aid is soooooo slow.  i had friends whose loans weren't disbursed until a couple of weeks after we started.  the fed loans are quicker but my private loan took forever.  ucla will let you take out a short-term emergency loan from them to cover tuition/whatever if this happens to you.
3) i live in the ucla married student housing if anyone has questions about that. it's pretty close geographically to the rest of the ucla off-campus apartments so i can tell you about the area if you're thinking about living in palms/mar vista.

i forgot what else people were asking about but i'm happy to answer q's if i can.

Anyone wanna get a fake marriage going  ;D?  I'm pretty chill, I like to watch the simpsons, family guy, and I have seasons 1 & 2 of Arrested Development on DVD. I only ask for a clean person to live with. I mean, aren't we all marrying because of convenience? Right? Doode, what's love got to do with it?

Oh BTW, I'm just joking. Please don't take this literally and report this to UCLA, getting me kicked out before I even start, and, and, and thereby ruining my life forever (man, gotta love those run ons).

so, is anyone intending to actually pay the SBA dues?  i know 45 bucks isn't that much, but still. . . how important do you think it is to have "priority" locker assignment?

That depends. Do you want your locker to actually be in the law building?

Just a thought. :-)

I have a question about Weyburn apartments.  I know I have to provide my own bed, but I wondered if there was any furniture provided in the living room/dining areas, like chairs or tables.  I'm happy to buy a bed, but having to buy all those other things would be a pain in the butt, especially when it comes time to move...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey,

I just moved into Weyburn yesterday.  Even though the apartments are unfurnished they really are fantastic.  It is SO beautiful here and the location is awesome!  They provide you with blinds, microwave, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and thats about it.  There is no pantry and you have glass shower doors (in case you bring an unnecessary shower curtain).  The freezer is quite small...my roommate and I might get a small freezer off of craigslist.  Honestly, don't worry about the chairs and tables in the dining areas because the area is quite small in the 2 bedroom apartment.  I don't know if this is the case with the studio apartments and the townhouses.  You really don't have room for a big kitchen table.  The common room is pretty spacious and you have room for a nice TV, long table, and some comfy chairs.  Everything is carpeted except for the kitchen which has tiles and the bathroom which also does not have carpet.  Hope that this helps!!!  The rooms are somewhat small but the apartment complex is GORGEOUS and it's a really great deal.  I would live here all 3 years if we could!!!

School is going to be amazing here!

Zilch on financial aid as of yet.

However, I was originally on the wait list for Weyburn but I recieved an email today from housing with a offer of a spot in a Weyburn 2BR.  I took it, so I am excited that I don't have to wander around Westwood calling up a million brokers looking for a place to live.  So, there is still hope for anyone still on the Weyburn waitlist.

any idea how to reject this offer?  or should i just not make the initial payment?  the only option i saw on the myHousing website was to make the payment.

I also got the email (for a 2BR) and was pretty surprised considering the fact that I'd been told by housing that the chances of getting housing at Weyburn through the lottery were slim to none.   ??? >:(

Hence, my getting an off campus apt. as well...

I'm getting antsy about the (lack of) eFANs as well.

To reject it, I think you go to "Accept your Weyburn Terrace Offer" (or something along those lines), then choose "View, Print, or Pay your Housing Offer" on the right-hand side. Log-in and there should be an option to choose that you do not wish to accept.

OK, I've been looking at this site for forever, but it's only my second post here. I'm shy. :) My first post was a hysterical LSAT related question a few days before the test. This post may end up equally lame because of the subject matter, but I just have to ask. Is anyone getting the UCLA meal plan? I don't cook, and I'd rather save money than spend it, but I don't know what would be the wiser choice. I've been out of college for awhile, so I can't even remember what I did for food back then. What do you think?

If you live close to campus, Ralph's and Whole Foods are really close.  I'm not really into organic foods bc I'm broke so I've just been going to Ralphs.  I'm pretty sure that it is open 24 hours.  I also don't cook at all (I don't even think that I've opened the oven since I've moved to LA) and I've been managing.  Get a Ralph's card and you'll save some cash.  If you have a car and you can get into Costco then you are definitely set.

When I was an UG student there many many years ago, the meal plans were quite expensive.  It's all you can eat at the dorm cafeterias, but in the early 90's it worked out to be $5-6 per meal.  You can definitely eat better and cheaper for that much money.  Besides, the LS is on the opposite end of the campus from the dorms and walking will easliy take 30 minutes.

make sure any apartment you get in Westwood comes with parking.  It's impossible otherwise to park on the street.  Strathmore and Landfair are busier streets than Kelton or Wayburn.  But try to look south of Wilshire or West of Sepulvada to get cheaper apartments instead of next to campus.

Also, I would recommend westsiderentals.com if you're looking for apartments.  There's a $60 fee but you'll have access to a good list of availabilities.  I found my apt. on this site, near Wilshire.  It's close to a UCLA shuttle bus station that I plan on taking to the law school so that I don't have to drive.  Best of luck!

I'm a late admit off the waitlist so I'm only now trying to scramble for housing.  I'm too late for the parking lottery so I need to find a place that is close enough to walk/bus to campus.  I've been reading the thread and intend to sign up for westsiderentals tomorrow, but any other suggestions for housing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

dailybruin.ucla.edu---look for the classified section
losangeles.craigslist.org---search for Westwood in apartment rentals
cho.ucla.edu---enter your UID and search for either sublets or apartments for rent

These three, and westsiderentals, seem to be the big sites.  If you are close enough to campus, you should definately go there and simply walk around Westwood and up and down Hilgard and call up every apartment complex (there are banners on each building) that you pass to see if there are vacancies.

are we required to take the Debt Management Session online?  I went to www.loans.ucla.edu and clicked to take the session.  After answering the first page of questions (Yes, No, No, Yes), it said that I don't have to complete it at this time.  Should I take it anyway?  Am i crazy?

I'm having the same problem.  (Yes, no, no, yes) and they won't let me complete it...I called the Law Financial Aid office and they said that I should be able to do it.  Not sure what is going on, but I guess I'll have to make the trek from Weyburn tomorrow to physically check with the office.

just got off the phone with the financial aid office, and according to the woman i spoke with, we do not have to take that Debt Management Session.  She said that what we have to take is Entrance Counseling through the law school.

http://www.law.ucla.edu/home/index.asp?page=1519

And then click on Entrance/Exit Counseling

hopefully she gave me the right info and i won't get screwed come august 11

Um...have you all bought your laptops?  I was thinking about getting a macbook, but according to some ucla tech guy I talked with, the school's servers don't support macs, i.e. you can't access the shared network.  Examsoftware is 'supposed' to work, however.

Eh, I guess I might have to buy a thinkpad then.  Has anyone looked at the deals offered by the ucla computer store?

Does anyone know if this is true??? When i called ucla and asked about the macbook they said that as long as i was able to download windows i would be fine . . . I hope i didnt just screw myself . . .

You are fine.  The only thing you can't access is the shared network, which is in effect a place to back up your files and also print from your laptop to the school's printers. But with the printing situation, I'm sure you can use one of the school's computers or switch over to windows and print.  Oh and tech doesn't offer support for macs either.  Those are the only things you wouldn't be able to do with a mac, and they don't really seem like huge drawbacks.

So yeah, the most important thing is examsoft, and the guy I spoke with said that it should work.   :)

So at the risk of sounding incredibly lame, I am settled into westwood early next week and anyone else I know at UCLA doesn't get in till september. I'm told you need a certain level of liver/kidney damage to pass the bar in california, if anyone else will be in town.

Have any of you checked your URSA? On mine, it says that my transcript hasn't been received yet. I sent that transcript in over two months ago and even the registar at my undergraduate institution has verified this. And to top it off, I haven't gotten any email about orientation. WTH is goin on?!  ???

Not sure if this helps, but I sent my transcript in at the beginning of June and they didn't update the status of that on ursa until maybe two weeks ago.  I would just give the law office to see if they have it in their file...it's probably just taking a long time for ursa to show it.

The transcript question:  If URSA has not updated your transcript and you know for a fact is was sent over 1 week ago, the office likely have lost it.  I had the same problem in June.  The UG registrar lady personally walked the second copy over to Dodd and it showed in URSA within 1 hour.  Yes my first transcript copy was lost, but LS never admitted that was what happened.

This year, sections 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 have classes together for 2 classes as a big section and then we will have a class together with just our section.  I'm not sure how lawyering skills will comprise, since each lawyering skills class is even smaller than our #1-12 sections.

Title: Re: OFFICIAL UCLA C/O 2009 THREAD!
Post by: jenery on August 08, 2006, 08:45:56 PM
last year sections 5/6 had most of our classes together, except for civ pro which was just section 5 (about 40 people) and then they split it up more for law skills.  i think law skills was about 25 students per class.  the 'big' classes have about 80 people, i think it saves on classrooms and professors.

i'm not sure how big the individual sections are this year. i'd guess around 28 if there are 340 incoming students total.  so it looks like the big class sizes will be about the same.  they can only fit so many students in some of the classrooms (like 1447/1457).

Hey,
So everyone but Kyung is free by Sunday. *Glares* So if it works for everyone, i'd like to do Tuesday night, say 7. Iqbal chimed in--why doesn't he suggest somewhere we should go?

Also, I went to the John Wooden fitness center yesterday so I could buy a membership for the next two weeks and not get fat. It caused some cognitive dissonance because
A) The center is mostly on the quarter system, but we are not, so UCLAW actually has us listed for a fitness center membership for the entire summer quarter which runs till september 15th or whatever.
B) Our accounts can't support a second membership.
C) We aren't technically supposed to get in by virtue of being a student/having a bruin card unless we have paid our dues.
D) Yet, "we" have paid for a membership, so it doesn't matter if we paid our tuition or not.

In my case, they resolved this contradiction by issuing me a paper two-week pass, because they are nice people. I could see different ones being nasty about it and saying the opposite-that I couldn't use the gym at all until school started. So if you want to swing by and see what they can do for you, give it a shot.

Works for me.  I picked up my bruin card 2 weeks ago and just swipe it to get in at the Wooden Center.  Nobody has said anything.  I think if you pick up your bruin card nobody will give you problems.  The gym is NICE...UCLA kids don't mess around either...i've seen some unbelievable bodies...HOT.  I've never been in a campus gym and actually felt bad about myself until two weeks ago.  Ah California, hehe.

hey after reading your post I checked my status and saw that my transcript was showing to be not received, too.  I emailed UCLA and it turns out that my degree hadnt been posted on the transcript they got from me... so called my school, and they said takes my UG 30-90 days to post and I guess I am at the tailend.  Was I incredibly ignorant not to know this?  I knew that it would take that long to get my diploma but I thought it would be faster electronically.  Anyway I emailed them back and explained the situation.  Hope it is okay, there is nothing I can do about my UG doing that.  I just graduated from UG in June though, so if you didn't then everything I just said is useless =P.

It's crazy that we have some of our first assignments and syllabuses already!  I won't get there before you guys are meeting up but hope you all have fun, esp before law school starts =)

I'm pretty sure that you can.  I got an e-mail two days ago that we can pick them up before orientation.  I picked mine up a while ago.  Speak to Doug Myers, he will give you a form that you need to bring over to some office on campus that deals with the bruincards.  Doug may just have them though at the law school since it's so close to orientation.

Cabs run roughly $2.50/mile by meter.  It's like 15 miles to LAX from Westwood.
