Title: Harvard Admit Weekend
Post by: curly on March 12, 2006, 04:41:24 PM
I haven't seen a thread about this yet, so here it is.

For those who are here, and for those who couldn't make it but want to know how it went, I think Su, Practiceboy, Bloomich, and myself are around. Look us up if you're on campus, PM us (or rather, me, I don't want to speak for all of them) with any questions.

So far it's been really great. Toby is very funny, very smart (with an amazing memory for detail), and very cool to hang out with. I know PB wanted everyone to know that Su, him and I sat down and had a drink with TStock at The Hark (along with a few other people). Or rather, we had drinks...I think TS just talked.

Also, Harvard's really big on the free food and drinks. And the admitted students are a good bunch (those I've met).

That's all for now.

It's rather embarassing how many times I've heard "You're PRACTICEBOY!"

I also got a "YOU'RE practiceboy?!"

Anyway, I'd love to stay in touch with all of those who I've met this weekend, so if we haven't swapped info, PM me and let's do so.  Also, I know a lot of you are lurkers, so you might have to register to PM me  :P

I'm also around and plan to be at lunch tomorrow.  I may also give a couple tours depending on how much sleep I get.

I had an insanely great time.  I'll be at HLS in the fall.  The students and administration were nice (which was a pleasant surprise).

BTW, Toby doesn't read these boards.  Yes, it was asked

He had a beer.  JSIA.   :D  And his memory for detail is extraordinary.

And overall, I have to say that the admit weekend really won me over in a number of ways.  I would never have thought I'd be considering turning down RTK if I got it for Harvard, but I am.  Hell, I honestly think if Yale called me tomorrow I'd need some time to think.

Weird....

I failed at meeting anyone from this board (I did say hi to Su and David, but I didn't recognize him until he'd already walked away). It's funny, but when I was there all I was thinking was "wow, I want to be here." Then I got home and all I was thinking was "that was one day too many of propaganda." That said, I'm thinking of just not going to the Michigan weekend and sending in my deposit to HLS. The people seemed really cool, both those at the weekend and the current students.

hahah, yeah. I remember going up to Lacoste and being like "Lacoste, hi I'm John Galt...." hahaha.

Anways, admit weekend was a blast. Lots of cool people, got to see some of my friends already at H. The BLSA was really helpful and I enjoyed the mock class. It helped that it wasn't extremely cold in Boston this weekend. The admitted students were really cool, and the current students seemed confident and chill. I like it. The library is awesome, the gym is decent, toby is tall, hastings is def the place to live, the coop had a great sale, cambridge reminds me of georgetown, and KSG is freaking amazing.

I didn't meet to many people from this board, but I knew a couple of posters in real life from other programs and it was cool seeing them again and catching up. I loved it!

The propoganda was a bit intense.  I figure I'll give the whole experience a week or so to settle before I really try to think about things.

And it was great and a little surreal to meet so many folks from the boards.  I feel like I said "hi" and then ended up in a different place from a lot of folks, so I didn't get to talk to everyone like I'd have liked to, though.  The whole weekend felt a little whirlwind-y.

Oh, and apparently there are only 6 lesbians at HLS.  I was a little sad about that.  "New York of Law Schools" my ass.  >:(

haha i definitely recognized practiceboy from the description of his hair :-)

I had a wonderful time.  I liked it a lot more than i ever expected to and Dean Kagan was amazing.  Her Q&A session really made me think about why harvard would be such a great place to attend.  I was also very impressed by all of the amazing things current students are doing- esp on the international human rights front.

I don't know...Dean Kagan was a little underimpressive, after all I'd heard about her.

I really liked that public interest video thing at the end. Weird way to end it, but left you with that giddy chick-flick happy feeling. All the food/alcohol was also designed to give you the same giddiness. Well done, H.

John Galt, you were there?! I kept trying to figure out if you were. Damn it, I can't believe I missed you. Were you in Warren's class?

BTW, I loved Prof. Warren. I think I might have a slight crush, now.

For those who were there and have Facebook, facebook me. I'm the very first name on the guest list, not too hard to find.

Yep, I was there; I was in Olgetree's class. I heard Warren was brutally crazy with the cold-calling in her normal class. Was that true in the mock class or was it just smooth sailing for everyone? I loved Olgetree's class, he has a way of just bringing the material to life. It was awesome.

She definitely did a lot of cold-calling, but it was really nice (and optional, for the mock class--you could choose to not use your placard and she wouldn't call on you). If you were struggling she'd just push you in the direction she wanted you to go or just call on someone else. I don't think anyone felt humiliated or embarrassed (of which I was deathly afraid when the class began), and I ended up thinking I actually learned something, which was nice. The best thing was she was so charismatic and funny it made it seem like a kind of game, rather than a class.

Definitely agree with that. I thought it was cute how he started off the class by trying to mess with us.

Nice meeting you Sue and practiceboy! vrm as well. I had a fantastic time as well and am pretty sure I'll end up in Cambridge in the fall, I think. I wasn't too interested in PI going into it, but their program sounds really great, especially the part about them paying you a salary to work an unpaid position. I'll have to find and exchange info with those of you I met! I was there from Friday evening until about 6pm yesterday, and it feels like there was a lot of stuff that I wish I could have seen. But Saturday's weather was perfect to explore Boston and the other two days were great. I was also surprised at how interesting everyone I met was.

Really?  I thought she was terrific.  I really like the fact that Harvard would have someone who comes off as so down to earth as their Dean; I kind of expected her to wear pantsuits and talk like a CEO, but I found her very... I think matriarchal is the word I'm looking for.  And I heard from a number of the public interest students, as well as the professor I sat with at lunch, that she's been a big force in bringing more resources to PI stuff in the last few years.

I found Dean Kagan's leadership/speaking demeanor to be Clinton-esque... she's obviously very savvy, but incredibly laidback at the same time.  I guess it makes sense considering their history.  I absolutely adore her - I actually emailed her last night asking about HIV-related clinics, and she responded within hours.

David, remind me who you are again, maybe in a PM?

Corky + JG... I was in Ogletree, too!  I thought he was incredible.  I'm glad I didn't get called on, though

Quick thoughts:

I liked Dean Kagan for about the first thirty minutes. After another thirty, and then another thirty yesterday, I was a little sick of the "look at all the amazing things we're doing!!" spiel. I'm sure any of the top schools could give a list of things their students and professors are doing that would sound just as impressive.

Some admitted students were wonderful; others were really off-putting. In the Q&A with the dean, a lot of the questions seemed aimed at making the questioner look tough and smart and impressive, rather than actually getting a question answered. If that's how those people conduct themselves in class and in life, I'll be disappointed.

That said, the kids I met on the Fenway tour were fantastic. I guess if you love baseball, you can't be a total knob.

The Warren class was intimidating, but in retrospect very good. I only hope she's not one of those professors who is funny, easygoing, and nice in lecture, then has very little interest in helping you or talking to you once her hour is up.

For those of you who were in the student life Q&A, I'm the kid from Duke.

The kid from Duke...the one who asked the REALLY LONG question during the Q&A? (The one that began with an introduction mentioning Duke and sports? I can't remember if it was the Student Life Q&A or the Dean Kagan Q&A, but that was a long, long question.)  ;)

I agree with you about DK. There was just too much of the spiel. I liked that she was down to earth, but I would have rather had Toby answering questions--I like funny and to the point. Also, he reminds me a little of Jon Stewart, which is good (even though he's probably several feet taller).

+ Dean Kagan is great. not just a great speaker but seems to genuinely care about the school and students

+ I went to a mock class with Prof Warren that was great

+ absy is cute

- I went to a real class with Porf Wolfmann or Wolf-something which was atrocious. Neither the prof nor the students was familiar enough with the material (corporate tax law) to answer the other's questions.

That part made me a little nervous.  I kept wondering if they really meant to admit me.   :-\  :D

And certainly the whole thing was very cheerleader-y.  But I'm sure that's the same at any admit weekend.  The only likely exception is Yale, because they have so many advantages that they have no need to sell themselves.

Lol.  Yes, I went.  I generally had the same impression as you guys, although, in my skeptical way, I didn't buy the Kagan rhetoric so much.  But I had an amiable time.  It was entirely what I had expected (again, in my skeptical way, I never believed that One L really described the Harvard of today...but, being an admit weekend, I also expected to be exposed mainly to people who had good things to say about the place).  People were nice.  Harvard's a nice place.  I'm sure those who have decided to attend will have a nice experience overall.

Yalecol, I can't believe I missed you either. Can you give me your initials or PM me your name? Or just facebook me?

It was kind of wild to have people come and ask me if "I go online" (you know who you are, lurker ;-)) or if I was "that girl from LSD." This will be my one and only claim to fame, I think.

Which folder are you talking about? Anyway I don't think you know me, as this is the only moniker I've used on LSD. I really didn't post here too much until I got the email/call from HLS. I think I may have talked to you or seen you there, I'm not sure.

eh, they do plenty of their own selling, not least of which is how they make sure that the last words you hear are theirs (the only admit days are the weekend before you have to decide)

I do believe there is almost an entire month between admit weekend and the deposit deadline.

wow, that was quick.  I guess I was remembering the interim deadline for HLS.  in any event, I stand by my general statement.  but that's off topic.

it was great to meet several of you (and by that, I mean that I only had the pleasure to meet several of you, not that I only enjoyed meeting a few of those)

talking like a lawyer, absy.... ;)

Except that his misplacement of the modifier "only" leaves room to construe his statement as meaning he had the displeasure to meet some of you ;).

Why does no one care that Galt keeps poking me in the eye!?

I was also a lurker this weekend (only lacoste knows my secret identity!)

I'm still waiting for the fireworks to hit...but sitting in the basement of Austin Hall looking out at the rain just felt right to me.

Which folder are you talking about? Anyway I don't think you know me, as this is the only moniker I've used on LSD. I really didn't post here too much until I got the email/call from HLS. I think I may have talked to you or seen you there, I'm not sure.

The folder you got at registration. It's got a list of everyone who was at the weekend.

Alci, you know me too well. I swear I heard angels singing when I walked into the reading room.

And HLS kids are super nice. I thought I would be snubbed but they were really down to earth.

Weird....

I feel the same way. I got waitlisted at CLS today and it didn't even faze me. It seems like HLS might be the best for what I want out of law school and my career, even if Y or S end up letting me in. But at this point H is the only admit weekend I've attended so I have no basis for comparison. Still, there wasn't much I didn't like about what I saw.

From both of the women I spoke with at the Lambda dinner.   :(  And a guy I spoke with said in his (3L) class there's only one gay girl, and he feels bad for her.   :( :(

But I doubt anyplace else would really be that much better, on the whole.  And Harvard has a lot of other schools, so hopefully there are lesbians at some of them.  I'd bet KSG has at least a few.

There's no 'facebook' page, but there's a list of all the people who went to the Admit Weekend in the folder they gave you when you registered. Using that list, you can search for people and add them to your Friends on Facebook, if you so desire.

Add me to the facebook crew.  I was the one who asked about the renovation of the Gropius Dorms during the Q&A with Dean Kagan.  I don't have my registration booklet with me, so I'll try to describe myself while remaining anonymous.  I'm sure my name is on the first page... the first few (my last name begins with an A); I'm from Texas and go to a TEXAS school......hth. ???

I asked the question about the HLS commitment to public service.  Damn, were the LSDers the only ones asking questions!?   ;D

Forget listening to the Dean's answers, I should have been paying attention to the people asking the questions.  :D I didn't ask any, but I did talk in Ogletree's class.

Now you've all got me racking my brain trying to figure out who's who.  I think I even might have been sitting next to Su at one of the panels and not realized it at the time...

 :D  Which panel?

Maybe the con law/ pub law panel?  Something in austin west; I was sitting a few rows down from the back either right next to the aisle or maybe one seat in I think.

Yeah, that was probably me.

Now I'm trying to remember if I asked a question at that one or just meant to.

Actually, no I did, I asked about how hard it was to get into the Con Law Clinic they mentioned.

Yup, then it definitely was you.  They didn't really have an answer, and a girl a row or two up said she knew someone who had taken it.  I wish I'd realized it at the time!

Yeah, they really didn't.  But I talked with that girl afterwards and she was very helpful.

hi, everyone!

i've been lurking for a bit and decided to chime in.  su, we met at diane rosenfeld's table: i sat to her right and was the third to join.  i think i said something about being excited to be at the feminist's table when i first arrived, and i left early - in the middle of kagan' speech.  lacoste, i saw you a bunch of times and wanted to say wassup (especially since we were both rocking our collars up during the kagan q&a), but never did.  i asked the question just before yours, about whether HLS would ever alter its first-year curriculum.  and akattorney, i wish we could've hung out more!  i think we both enjoyed the BLSA conference and it would've been fun to hang out at the party with you.

i LOVED the weekend.  the negotiation workshop, the boston tour, BLSA stuff, chat-and-chews, meeting the kag-meister/t-stizzle...solid.

i'm actually sad that I didn't get to meet more people during the weekend. my thesis was due this thursday (so excited that it's done!) so i was in and out of the events cuz I was editing in my free moments.
i think i might try to crash the saturday social events of the second admit weekend since I'm on campus anyway.  :D that way maybe I can meet more of you!

Hey, I've been lurking awhile too, but I figured after reading this that I had to post as well.  I was also at Diane Rosenfeld's table -- I think I sat to your right with an empty chair between us, Su - and I was the second to sit down.  Does that mean that all of us at the feminist table read this site?
I thought she was pretty awesome, and I definitely came away from the admit weekend much more impressed with Harvard and its student life and public interest opportunities -- but I still think I'll probably take the Hamilton at Columbia...

That is funny that all, or nearly all, of us are online.  I thought she was very neat, although I can't say I'm really with her on the prostitution thing; that's pretty much the feminist issue I feel most ambivilent about.

I'm starting to think that I'm leaning towards Harvard even if I do get the RTK at NYU.  But that has more to do with a location preference than anything else; in terms of actual education and job opportunities I'm feeling more and more like all the top schools are pretty similar, at least to the degree that it's possible to really know about it from this angle.

But if you get the RTK, you'd be able to live off-campus. :-\

I'd be able to live off campus at HLS too.  Actually it would be a lot easier at HLS.  At NYU I'd be a lot more likely to live on-campus; sad about the cat (she'd be fine and quite possibly happier at my parents', but I'd miss her), but I just don't see commuting from deep in Brooklyn every day working out.

bass, what's the name of the instrument that's like a guitar but it's...a sort of rectangular (technically has a pentagonal face but is mostly rectangular), and has a lot of strings (~10) and is plucked like a guitar? Reese Witherspoon plays one as June Carter in Walk the Line.

Just looking through this thread to get impressions of H.  Yale, I think -- if you're talking about the part where she's "writing" Ring of Fire -- that you're talking about an autoharp.

Anyone know when the next Harvard admit weekend is?

Yeah, I think Harvard University has a general policy banning movie film crews from campus.  The shots of "Harvard" in other movies are thus similarly fake.

Well, kind of. I think the movie crews are banned from Harvard-owned land, but the film crews shoot from the streets and sidewalks which are technically Cambridge property. And Harvard allows that.

Spike Lee filmed at my school for "25th Hour."  Supposedly a movie or two has used our campus to imitate Harvard, but I can't say that I know what movies (if any) prove the rumor.  We have Law and Order filming in our bookstore tomorrow.  Random.

"Though Harvard has been featured in many US films, including Legally Blonde, The Firm, The Paper Chase, Good Will Hunting, With Honors, How High, and Harvard Man, the University has not allowed any movies to be filmed on its campus since Love Story in the 1960s; most films are shot in look-alike cities, such as Toronto, and colleges such as Wheaton and Bridgewater State [6]. Also set in Harvard is Korean hit TV series Love Story in Harvard[7], filmed at University of Southern California."

Wow, it's so awesome that Kagan is calling you guys. I wonder if she's only doing it for the ones they really really want? I got my HLS '09 shirt today, and I thought to myself, "Just like the messenger bag at admit weekend, one more thing that I feel reluctant to use because I'd feel sorta gunnerish." Haha. But I love getting mail from Harvard, and free stuff is always appreciated.

Don't know about places to stay, but just know that the tour you go on pretty much determines the people you hang out with for the next day or so. So, choose wisely. (Sam Adam's Brewery Tour!!)
