Title: YALE DING!
Post by: dw05 on February 04, 2006, 01:47:44 PM
Yup, that's right everyone, they're coming; got the rejection letter today (dated 02/02).  I'm actually far less disappointed than I thought I would be; it's just one more complication removed from the decision-making process.  Stings a little bit to be the first one though.   :-\

Looks like Harvard for you. Anyway, what did it say?

Nothing unusual in the letter, just your typical "we get so many great applicants and only have so many spots in the incoming class" stuff.  I live in CT, so I'm guessing that I might be the first in a wave of letters arriving early next week (or else they just REALLY didn't like me, which is cool too).  I've got enough great choices that I don't feel like I have to be too greedy and obsess over it.  Better now than in April or beyond, right?

You doing Harvard then?

I'm not 100% decided, but Harvard is leading the pack at present (barring any substantial scholarship offers from the others, which I'm not anticipating).  I plan on visiting several others, including Columbia/NYU, before I commit to the big H.

Does the reference you're thinking of involve telekinesis, temporal stasis. and/or clairvoyance?

To be certain, the later development of the ability to cause things to explode revealed that it's not a temporal stasis but merely a slowing of molecules.

And yes.

Hey guys, long time lurker here. Anyway, 3.81 / 174, in at everywhere except HYS, Yale just said no thanks. I went completed mid November and heard nothing since.

Oh well, I heard I would take it okay since it was expected, still disappointing nonetheless.

i can use this word for the first time now: dinged.

and i can now vouch for the fact that being COMPLETELY unsurprised and expectant in no way protects you from the sting of that small envelope.

I know I posted a placeholder above, but I was so impressed with my calling my rejection this morning before the mail came that I just had to make another post.  So add me to the list.

At least I had my scholarship from my alma mater (Tennessee) raised to full in-state tuition.  Even though I am about to withdraw, it at least takes away the sting.

Was everyone else's rejection not even a third of a page in length?  Or was that just mine?

I particularly liked how they wrote that "many highly qualified applicants have to be turned away," which sounds like theyre calling you highly qualified for about .5 seconds. My only previous rejection letter (from Princeton undergrad five years ago) had an entire paragraph about my own personal acheivments and successes, which at least made me smile. i cant tell which one is the aberration.

After seeing all the 172+ rejects, though, I definitely am enjoying being in high LSAT company for at least a few moments. Good luck to those who havent heard!

Title: Re: YALE DING!
Post by: stacy on February 07, 2006, 03:28:48 PM
when i read this thread, i immediately headed for the mailbox, thinking of all the reasons that getting rejected from Yale was a good thing:

a) easier to make a decision with fewer schools to choose from
b) bring the parents' expectations down after the harvard deferral got them up
c) who chooses to live in New Haven anyway?
d) my ex, actually, chose to live in New Haven, and who wants to live in the same city as their ex?
e) rejection is character-building

and when i got to the mailbox, THE LETTER WASN'T THERE.  I was almost excited about getting rejected.  Oh Yale, how you continue to find new ways to disappoint me.

er...  why are you looking at penn and not nyu?

For a few reasons, one of them being Penn's Wharton cert program.

I am also hoping Penn will give me some $.

It seems to me that Columbia and NYU are very similar schools in many ways. And Columbia gave me $$ while NYU gave me $0, so I don't see any reason to pay $50k for NYU versus $10k for Columbia.
Title: Re: YALE DING!

how are they going to beat a full ride?  :D

It's not totally full ride, so Penn still has some room to compete (~$10k).

Also: honestly, one of the (many) reasons I have not withdrawn at Penn despite withdrawing at NYU and Gtown is a morbid curiosity as to whether I can make it past Penn's notoriously squirrely yield-protection measures.
Title: Re: YALE DING!

Yeah and I'm tempted by the certificate program as well, but really it's more of a gimmick than anything else.

And you also get the pleasure of knowing that you made it past the yield squirrels.

Did you assume you wouldn't get $ from NYU? NYU hasn't made its financial offers yet--they often hand out large sums with the financial aid package in March/April.

I didn't qualify for the RTK and similar scholarships at NYU because I want to work for The Man for a while after graduation.

I could have applied for need-based aid from NYU, but since Columbia comped me $40k x 3 yrs without my having to apply or jump through any hoops, I figured why bother applying for need-based aid from NYU...

I'm pretty sure it's not all need-based.  They do also have Dean's scholarships which don't require a committment not to work for The Man, and I don't think are need based.  I guess you may have to submit a financial aid form to be considered for them though.

It strikes me that it's worth it if you have any interest at all in NYU.  But if you'd prefer a mostly free ride at Columbia to free ride at NYU there's certainly no reason to bother.

actually NYU is one of the few schools that doesn't require Need Access or Profile...

They only want FAFSA, and a pretty short proprietary form

I had to post your ding in the Yale Obsession thread, Mal.

It definitely shouldn't have been completely expected, you look like a rock-hard candidate who will end up Harvard-bound.

What amazes me is that you seem to be the first post-february ding.

This could be most people who have gone complete.  It seems like they should have a good handle on their pool a month after the app deadline.

Yall had me scared to go to the mailbox today. It proved to be unnecessary anxiety tho; there was no yale news, tho my boalt acceptance package finally came.

I just went complete at yale on feb 28th (i applied on the 2/1 deadline) so they probably haven't even read my app yet. What do u guys think the odds are that I'll hear before April?  :-\ I'd really like to have all my decisions before spring break but I have a feelin Ima still be waitin on Yale...

I was hoping to come home from vacation to find at least a couple acceptances...but I was nonetheless THRILLED to find my first rejection from Yale!  Woo hoo!  Not that I was expecting to get in, but it still hurts a little.

The letter was dated 3/8 and I only went complete at 1/27...this probably means they just tossed my application in the trash and waited a few weeks to let me know.  Oh well.

I was sort of wondering how the no-250 thing would pan out.  I'm surprised it was a ding rather than an incomplete.  In any case, can't knock the hustle and can't knock Harvard.

Dinged via email (I had a deadline for accepting a scholarship tomorrow, so I think the email was a courtesy so make sure I heard in time).  I wouldn't be at all surprised to see another round of rejections very soon.  Good luck to everyone still waiting for a decision.

By the way, the title of the email was "Yale Law School Decison" (their typo, not mine).  If they can't even use correct spelling when sending me my decision, I don't think I would have wanted to go there anyway  ;)

Sorry to hear that. I too just got dinged via email. I had also emailed them about 10 days ago, requesting info on my application status because of an impending scholarship deadline. Same email title "Yale Law School Decision," but, in my email they spelled "Decision" correctly. ;)

Oh well, while a little insulted, I'm  secretly relieved not to be waitlisted, if only to have some closure.
Good luck to the rest of you!

Quick question to mel and B.K., how did you request an expedited response?  Was it by tel, email, or fax?  I

I contacted them via email. Prior to that, they hadn't sent me any response.
It took them about 10 days for them to get back to me though, so I bet they'll get back to you, in time.

I was just thinking about this and I'd suggest being a little careful before requesting an expedited response.

It seems reasonable to think that this request would probably kill your chances of being put on the waitlist -- I know at Yale waitlist pretty much = ding, but for anyone who's actually interested in being on the waitlist, I'd take a second thought.

For what it's worth, I requested an expedited response (last week) and was waitlisted... So clearly it doesn't completely kill your chances of being put on the waitlist. (Although, as you point out, a WL pretty much = a ding, so it's not particularly meaningful).

you put too much emphasis on USNWR.

and according to your logic, since yale is the same every year and nyu is improving, in a few years nyu will be ahead of yale.  that makes a whole lot of sense.  :P

USNWR is OMNIPOTENT

actually yale is improving!

NYU isn't improving...NYU has the same overall score this year as last, yale doesn't but it has a higher margin between yale and #2 school now...

NYU didn't move up so much as CLS moved down  :-\

got my letter yesterday, too, a solid 5.5+ months after being complete there.

of course, considering that I called them on the 12th and they told me the decision had "just come out of committee" and I was rejected, it was hardly a big shock.

the fact that they then waited 10 days before mailing the letter letting me know i was rejected, and it would have been this long before i found out, had i not called?  also not surprising.
