Title: Any info on Mercer?
Post by: hooah007 on February 04, 2006, 01:21:09 PM
Anyone have any info about Mercer Law?  I'm currently deciding between Mercer/Duquesne.

Thanks!

Apparently they have a really good legal writing program.

Are you from Georgia?  I can't possibly imagine living in Macon for three years.

Is Macon that bad?  I grew up in NY, went to school in DC, now living in MO for the Army.  I've been to GA (savannah) and loved it.

Guess it depends on what you are looking for :)

If you are looking for a fast-paced single life, Macon will probably not be for you.  With that said, I actually really like Macon.  It is close enough to Atlanta to enjoy the benefits of a large city, but has a small town academic feel to it.  My uncle went there and absolutely loved it.  My one problem with it is that (since I am married) my hubby would have a harder time finding work there so we would probably live halfway between Macon and Atlanta.

Hope that helps!

Well, Macon definitely isn't as cool as Savannah. ;)

But yeah, it's only an hour or so away from Atlanta.  So, I guess one way to think about it would be that you wouldn't have much to distract yourself from your studies during the week but then if you wanted to actually go somewhere fun, you could drive to Atlanta or Savannah on the weekends!

Great point!  Macon is definitely not as cool as Savannah if you are comparing the two :)

Read where I go to school.  Jackass.
And, Macon is very unsexy.

i lived and worked in macon for a year if anyone has questions.  the running punch line is if in Atlanta people ask you where you work, if in Athens what your major is, if in Savannah where you go to drink, and in Macon where you go to church.  that kind of sums up my experience there as well.  a lot of very nice/friendly people in the town but not much actually going on.  i've got a friend in law school there and he says he has been kept extremely busy there and, like another poster said, the legal writing program is supposed to be pretty good.

I grew up in Macon and attended Mercer undergrad so I will offer a few comments on the law school.  First off, I think Mercer has an excellent law school.  If you were to attend Mercer Law, I think that you would receive a legal education as good as if not better than any other school in the state. I have heard elsewhere that they have the highest bar passage rate in the state but I am not positive. Mercer is constantly improving, and I think its reputation will continue to do so along with it. I think they are entering the final stages of a $100 million dollar improvement to the main campus. Mercer is great in a lot of ways, and of course they have their negative points too, and I think a lot of it comes from being a small private school.  Its hard build the name and attract the highest quality students when you have to compete against three other top 100 schools in the same medium sized state when tuition costs are so high.

The city of Macon has its ups and downs. The city went bankrupt a few years back but is starting to regain its footing.  The crime rate isn't great and there are some poor areas outside of campus. There are some bums and sketchballs but you get that a lot of places.  I personally have never felt unsafe, but my car has been broken into a couple of times in the 5 years I have lived downtown. Downtown Macon is starting to turn around and hosts a number of good bars, art gallerys, shops, and restaurants. New places are starting to open more frequently.  They are building an enormous new Bass Pro Shop on the north side of town, along with some new shopping developments that are rumored to be bringing some high end department stores possibly bloomingdales and saks. North Macon is very nice, nothing really to complain about there.

Personally, I am pretty sure that I won't be going there primarily because I have been there far too long as it is but I would definately recommend it to anyone considering it as an option.

I'm also accepted there and I'm currently trying to decide between Mercer and Texas Tech... Someone told me that the course load and time spent out of class is way higher than the average law school. Anyone know how true that is?

I was also admitted to Mercer and am considering attending but I have a few questions:

What is Mercer's reputation in the south?

How is the job market for Merer grads in the south?

Has anyone else heard that Mercer's law schools is generally not worth such high tuition? (I guess I'm just starting to wonder if it would have been better to apply to less costly schools.)

Thanks.

I would venture to say that Mercer has a great reputation in the south especially in Georgia and Florida and that there are plenty of job opportunities for Mercer Law grads.   The only negative thing I can thing of is that its name might not stretch as far from home as other schools, but I don't think that anyone who knows anything about Mercer would say that its quality of education is anything but first rate. In Atlanta you have a lot of competition from UGA, Georgia State, Emory and even people from University of Alabama.  However if you have done well in school it shouldn't be a problem.  Plus, outside of Atlanta, particulary in savannah, southern GA and toward florida, I think Mercer's reputation might give you a slight edge because its reputation is so strong in those areas.
