Title: public interest/social justice board
Post by: rhombot on January 27, 2006, 09:35:51 AM
this doesn't seem to have been suggested, but how about a board for students going to law school to pursue public interest/social justice/human rights goals?

there seem to be a bunch of us here - i'm in favor of us having our own board, under "specific groups/issues".

can i hear a second?

Yep! A resounding fourth.

(Hmm, I was going to insert a lame music-geek interval joke here... but decided against it.)

Ooh, you just couldn't resist the temptation...   ;)

...although a sixth could be pretty minor, so we should probably leave it where it is.

*** this post contains the kind of useful information you would receive more of if LSD had a public interest/social justice board ***

check out equal justice works' e-guide to public interest programs:

http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/eguide/search.aspx

although only about 60 law schools have volunteered information for the guide, it's a useful resource, since those schools offering strong support for public interest folks are the schools most motivated to respond to the survey.

also: EJW's CEO david stern has told me that starting next year, the e-guide will be published on newsweek's website. this is sure to motivate more schools to provide information.

thanks rhombot!  I would love also to have a discussion over what is "public interest law" according to different faculty, students, schools...  for example, it never occurred to me that being a prosecutor would be considered public interest until I was looking into LRAPs and some listed it as an example profession.  When I first thought of public interest law, it seemed clear that it was for non-profits doing social justice work (from any side of the spectrum).  Interesting to think not all people assumed that...

Anyway, I'm impressed by equal justice works.  Are there other organizations similar to them?

the ABA has a public interesty page:

http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/

there's the national lawyers' guild, which has law student membership and chapters at many law schools. it publishes a "law school disorientation" guide:

http://www.nlg.org/

there tend to be a lot of public interest law conferences, like the reblaw conference at yale next weekend:
