Title: Notre Dame Applicants
Post by: !! on November 10, 2005, 06:36:40 PM
Looking through LSN, it seems like Notre Dame is a little weird with its admissions.  They seem to snub a lot of people with high numbers.  Not just yield protecting either... these people's numbers are not THAT high.  Any thoughts?

I'm thinking about throwing my hat in at ND, but this makes it seem like less of a "safety."

i decided to look at the numbers at your prompting. very very odd.

i thought i had an okay shot (if how much mail i've received is indicative, and the fee waiver). but that's just insane. they're rejecting people who got into T14 schools.

maybe they're spastic?

I know they're super conservative.  Maybe they're just trying to keep it white, middle class, and Irish Catholic.

Yeah, it's really odd. I'm sure they just have a superiority complex. I honestly feel my chances at some T14 schools are better than my chances at ND.

I think ND could really break into the t14 if it stopped rejecting so many good people.

I applied there cause I got a fee reduction.

I have a 3.85/166 and am planning on a ding. They suck.

Me too.

I have a 3.9/167.

Ethics question:  I was baptized Roman Catholic, though I'm pretty much agnostic.  Since they ask for religion on the form, can I put Catholic?  I'm pretty sure that, according to Catholic law, I'm part of their church.

I also suppose sending my gay themed diversity statement is out of the question...    :D

What are your thoughts on this numbers issue, Dave?

Hmmm. I mentioned praying to God in my diversity essay, but I don't even know if I submitted that to ND. Too many apps, brain is friend, kill me now....  ;D

Yeahhhh... I was just thinking of applying there as a safety, and because it's 20 bucks.  But it just doesn't seem like a safety.  It should be.

It depends on how you see religion, I was baptized Catholic too. I don't think the Catholic church is religious in the way people usually use the term, because religion means (EDIT: to me) some kind of man-made system, rather than being purely spiritual.  You are right to say that the Catholic church would count you as a Catholic, despite what individual followers or others opine on the subject.  In your shoes, if I felt it would help me, I would put I was Catholic too.  I was baptized, raised, did my sunday school (actually it was Wednesday afternoons)for Commmunion, confession and the whole thing.  When people ask about my religion, I usually say I was baptised Catholic, but don't practice.  That's probably true for a lot more people than would admit or realize it.

True enough, but my impression is that the Catholics at ND are pretty gung-ho.

Ha!  That makes two of us!  I don't even know that I'd go there.

You're already in at GTown, Annabel.  Are you just using ND for leverage?  To get scholarships out of OTHER schools?  I'm considering that, if I think ND would give me money.

I was considering applying there before I got into Gtown. I just think the whole Roman Catholic thing is funny. I'm Roman Catholic, but I'm also pro-choice. Most people get really riled up whenever I say that, so I'd hate to see what they'd do to me at ND  :-X

My thing is, I've got a fistful of fee waivers for good schools.  I think I'm gonna use 'em.  Maybe one of these schools will offer me money, what the hell!

ND has always stood out in terms of their admissions.  To use a more general example, their football team has suffered because they try to bring in top student/athletes.  They are a small law school with a pretty solid national reputation.  I think they choose people they think will add to their class, much like a small liberal arts college might, though not to the same degree.  They choose students, it appears, who have good numbers and either a compelling application or who exhibit a real desire to go there school.  Dinging high numbers is not yield protection, they are a good enough school that has remained small and has selectively chosen their law students.  I don' think it has much to do with keeping it conservative or Catholic, but that factor might be selfselection of applicants.

All the mid 160s with higher gpas have a good shot.  They will choose the ones they want out of those who have good scores.  I think they are one of the few schools that actually reads the applications.  (hyperbolic, but I think you know what I mean)

I hear yah. Just don't apply to someplace you'd never consider attending though...at least that's my philosophy.

I'd go to most any Tier 1 for the right price... short of BYU.

i read last years catalog from nd and strongly considered applying. this year i read their ew catalog and god was mentioned on just about every page. most of my family are strong catholics but i dont think i would want that type of enviroment for lawschool. on a side note BC is still one of my top choices. they didnt seem to make their school all about god though. maybe im wrong but it seems like nd is taking a turn towards being more religous

Well, BC is different.  It's a Jesuit school, as is Georgetown.
