Title: NYU Sticker v Duke$
Post by: alex510347 on June 02, 2016, 02:30:21 AM
I will be going into the Army JAG Corp (I'm going to law school for the military) and will be making around 80. I would like to go into big law after the military or take a clerkship. Although New York sounds great I would be living in a shoebox for three times the cost of a great place in Durham. I also don't know how much of the city I could take advantage of on a shoestring budget. I'm from the south and with the 60k the army will give me it makes Duke's attendance cost seem worth it. Will the benefits of NYU in the long run for big law after the Army outweigh the debt benefit of duke.

First of all, these are both great schools and you can't really go wrong with either one. That said, I would be inclined to simply choose the cheaper option. NYC is insanely expensive, and you could very well go way over your predicted cost of attendance.

Both schools will give you a shot at Biglaw, although I assume that Duke is probably better if you want to live in the Southeast.

Aside from cost I would think about where you want to live for three years. NYC and Durham are very, very different places with totally different lifestyles. Also, NYU and Duke are pretty different places. NYU is very liberal, very PC, and Duke is more conservative (or at least more tolerant of conservative views). These are things to consider if you're going to spend three years somewhere.

If your sole goal really is to go into JAG then accumulate as little debt as possible.  However, I think very few people stick with the original law school plan, so be wary of that.

Then assuming everything else is the same any law student should consider location, cost, personal feelings about the school and last at least U.S. News Rankings.

Obviously New York and North Carolina are two very different places, additionally NYU and Duke are two very different schools.  If your in to college basketball and living in a College town for three years Duke will be awesome!

If your into going to Broadway plays, shows, Central Park, etc NYU will be awesome.

I personally would like the Duke experience, but I love basketball you may hate it.  Therefore, always remember that choosing a law school is a highly personal choice, and random people on the internet should not be the basis of a life altering decision.

Your clearly very intelligent to have been admitted into both schools so do not overthink it to much.

If I was you, which I am not I would choose the cheaper cost of living, scholarship, and less stressful environment of North Carolina, particularly if you really are planning on going into JAG, because they will assign you a location so your connections in law school will not matter that much.

This is also a good article on how to choose a law school.

Good luck on this decision and congrats on your acceptances!

I'm a current law student and I agree with what the others have said. My 2 cents is that minimizing debt should be a sizable consideration when you have the option to choose between two such high caliber schools. I would add that where you feel comfortable is really important too because the stress of law school is big enough as is. So living in a place you would enjoy for three years is pretty important!
