Title: A request for Personal Statement critiquers
Post by: !закон и право! on September 19, 2009, 11:11:44 AM
I don't typically ask for help on this forum, and I'm a little weary about posting my Personal Statement publicly for direct critiquing - however, IMO the Personal Statement is the most dreaded part of the application process and I'd appreciate some insight and advice from as many volunteers as possible.

I'm wondering if anyone might be willing to exchange Personal Statments for critiquing. The standards for the Personal Statement (mainly, in content) differ between Canadian and American law school applicants. I'll advise you on the differences (for any American volunters) and I'll try to provide my best critique on the basis of my knowledge of what American law schools look for.

Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks.

ETA: I expect to be finished a first draft of my PS by the end of next week, so this is by no means an immediate request for volunteers. Just let me know if and when you have time.

I'd be willing to read it. I'm already done with mine, so no need to read mine :)

Thales,

If you want a free expert assessment of your personal statement, I'd love to provide you with a general critique.  As a former admissions officer, and expert consultant, I'd be glad to give you by insight.  Fee free to email me directly with a word document.

Best,

I'd be willing to help as well, mine is finished, so no need to trade.  I'd more than happy to send you mine if necessary...anything that might help you out. Message me if you'd like to arrange an email.

Thanks guys. I'm still working on it though. I've been a bit preoccupied with trying to find work for the remainder of the year.

I will send PMs containing a final draft by early next week at the latest.

I don't know if I can be of as much help as these other guys, but I'm in. Mind you, I just barely started working on my PS
(with job & kids, I had to focus on the LSAT first, the PS second, etc)...

Sure. Thanks for the offer.

I'm still working on it.

IMO, this is possibly the worst part of the whole application process. But it's finally coming together.

I'm great at writing things like this, for OTHER people... not so great at doing it, for myself. But I think mine is coming together.  Finally got a copy of my college transcript this week (I graduated 20 years ago) and was more than a little surprised... in a Not Good Way. Clarified a lot of where I've been, where I'm going, WHY I'm going... like that.   Looking at that piece of paper, it was like looking at the record of a completely different person.  Crazy.

Okay, I've decided to take a slightly different approach to the PS.

The original was a bit too verbose, and possibly, uninteresting. I've tried to adhere more to simple language principles and I've reworked my intro to make it more of a catch and hold.

I should be done, seriously, within the next 2 days. I will get back to everyone who offered to give it a glance. No more delays. Promise.

I appreciate the offers for help.

Thales,

I am familair with both American and Canadian law schools, and have helped clients gain admission to the top programs in both countries.  In fact, I recently attended an admissions workshop at Osgoode Hall in Toronto.  If you decide that you would like more professional insight of your Personal Statement, please email me directly at info@writetrackadmissions.com.  I would be glad to provide you with a free assessment.

Best,

Hey, Thales, I'd be happy to read and give feedback. I'm still working on mine, but I've been writing professionally since 1998, so I can at least catch your comma splices and give honest feedback.

Argh, personal statement. Argh.

Sure. Thanks for the offer guys.

I haven't forgotten. I'm still working on it. Unfortunately, I'm also a horrible procrastinator.

I actually drafted mine yesterday and I'm pretty sure it's tragically misguided, so at least procrastination is saving you from that fate.

/badly tarnished silver lining

Alright, I've sent off my PS to a few of you guys thus far.

For the others, I'll need your email address. The statement is rather long (and in .doc format) and likely won't fit in a LSD PM.

Thanks again everyone.
