Title: Chicago RD
Post by: upgrade on July 06, 2009, 10:14:52 AM
Anyone heard anything from Chicago?  In the past, they started releasing decisions in late June or early July.

Just went complete today. Didn't apply ED but will be interested to see how quick the turnaround is since I have to let berkeley know yes or no one week from today

Hopefully your application changing to complete means they are working on transfer applications.  Were they just waiting on your transcript?

Yep I think that was the hold up. I didn't get my last grade until late June and my stuff from my law school didn't get sent out until the last Friday in June. We shall see what happens.

I just went complete today as well.  I'm in the same position (need to let Berkeley know by 7/15), so I hope the turnaround will be quick.

I applied RD to Chicago and have been complete since 6/25.  From previous years I wouldn't expect anything for at least another week or so

Went to decision mailed. I am assuming it is a ding since I think they call for acceptances.

Congrats man! Were you just at "decision" or "decision mailed" ?

If you are still on the phone, ask how many more calls they are making today! =)

I think they said that ED deferrals weren't binding.

Congrats, Santo and Upgrade! I told you that we'd be having a beer once all of this was said and done. If you're attending, see you folks on the 14th!

Anyone have housing tips?  I'm planning on making a weekend trip to check out as many decent apartments as possible and hopefully sign a lease.

I have heard that a place called "Regents" is a good bet, but expensive.  Their 2br apartments are a little more affordable, so finding a roommate could cut down on costs

Are you looking in the Hyde Park area or somewhere closer to downtown?

I'm planning on living in HP.  It's significantly cheaper, plus I would have a shorter commute (maybe even biking/walking).  I have a friend at my current school who said that there is no shortage of nice little studios scattered around the campus.  She also mentioned the Regents, but had mixed reviews.  I think I'm going to shoot for a nice, affordable studio in the vicinity of the school.

are you in touch with a real estate agent, or are you familiar with the area?
Title: Re: Chicago RD
Post by: widennumber2 on July 15, 2009, 11:22:49 AM
no, and no.  but i'm thinking it might be worth it to use an agent this time around.  i am moving to an area of Chicago of which i have no familiarity, and i will likely be at this apartment for two years... it might be worth paying a fee.

anyway, keep me updated on what you are all doing.

In Chicago, generally the agents are paid by the apartment.  I'm not sure if or how it affects any special promotions, though.

Sorry to intrude on the transfer thread.  I just wanted to say that w/r/t choosing housing, I think there is a decent sized group of rising 2Ls that decided to remain in Regents Park next year, so if being around classmates is appealing to you, you should check it out.

You're not intruding at all!  While on the topic: do you have any thoughts on Regents Park?  Did you have a good experience?

I have no complaints about Regents.  It may be expensive for HP, but it is not that expensive for the city.

The apartments are clean/new looking and pretty spacious, and the building feels very safe - there is always someone working in the lobby and parking garage and you have to swipe a keyfob to get past the lobby.

I also really like the fact that it has a gym, dry cleaners, market, computer lab, off-street covered parking (although its realy expensive), and grill (esp nice when you're studying for finals and don't want to cook) in the building.

It's also pretty convenient to buses going downtown and to the law school.  It's the first stop on the 172 bus going to the law school, which is great in the mornings when the buses get extremely crowded.  If you live at stop further along the route, sometimes the bus is too full and the driver will pass by those stops, which has to be awful when its -10 degrees out.

yes, please share, any info from current students is greatly appreciated...I can't speak for anyone else but I'm kind of clueless about the  move and I really don't have all that much time to make it.  Also, do you know anything about how transfers do at OCI?

ocs has pretty much stopped giving us information on how students do at oci

Yeah sorry I really have no idea.  I don't currently know any transfers here, so I can't even ask them.  Is the school pairing you up with 3Ls who transferred or anything like that to ask for advice on things like this?  I know they emailed rising 2Ls to ask for peer mentors.

Newly accepted students should log into the admitted students forum because there are some transfer students looking for roommates in Regents.

I haven't received a user/pass for the admitted student's forum and cannot create a CNetID.

Hey everyone!  I'm a 3L (or at least I will be when I finish writing a paper...), thought I would drop in to say hi.

For housing, if you're not into living in Regents (I wasn't), consider grad student housing (http://reo.uchicago.edu/graduate_housing/index.shtml).  Generally the buildings are somewhat older and less snazzy, but considerably cheaper.

I found housing via craiglist and am living in the same rented condo all three years.  It was a good move for me.

Anyway, most of us hang out in this (http://www.lawschooldiscussion.org/prelaw/index.php/topic,86734.0.html) thread (although the name really should be changed).  Long, but lots of good reading (and we all know you want to procrastinate from doing something else!).  Come over and chat!

I was able to do the CNetID thing quite some time ago. Regarding the admitted students board, e-mail McKellop, she'll tell you the info (I don't feel comfortable giving it out myself.)

That's not surprising, you were admitted months before the rest of us. =)

Congrats Trump!  I was hoping you would get into a top school.

If someone hasn't already, I will create an unofficial Facebook group and invite everyone who is going to attend as a transfer.  Send me a private message with your email address or Facebook profile link and I will invite you to the group.

My input = go to Chicago, unless you want to practice in NYC and get Columbia/NYU.

Or unless you get HYS, obviously.

Who is defecting?

Trump and someone else (don't know his forum name).  Just to be clear, these are transfer admits who were going to attend, not U of Chicago 1Ls who are leaving.
