I need to figure out the housing situation in Ann Arbor.  I know there are "housing ambassadors," but what is their actual function?

From the blue sheet? I think they just answer questions. I don't know, I think you're just supposed to find someone with similar circumstances and ask them questions.

Yeah, I dunno...I think I'd feel awkward in asking people random questions about Michigan housing.  Also, I'd just want to email one of them and ask her about her Olympic experience ;D

Best advice I can give is to inspect housing close to campus very carefully.  It's sort of touch and go -- some very well maintained older buildings that cater mostly to graduate students are the best bets.  There are newer developments further from school that are pretty good -- little more expensive sometimes, but if you hunt long enough, the price difference is negligible.

I've lived in a newer 2 BR/2 BA place on the south end of AA with another graduate student roommate for some time, yet will be getting my own place for 3L due to the roommate's engagement.  I'm angling for something closer to campus for my last year, but the place I've lived in for awhile has been good -- five to ten minute drive to the commuter lot depending on traffic and then a five to ten minute bus ride to the law school depending on bus wait.  Newer building, no maintenance problems, reasonable rent.

What are the houses like that are like, within a 10 minute walk of the law quad?  Surrounded by super loud UGs or generally decent?
Title: Re: Michigan Class of 2012: It Just Feels Right
Post by: DrLazarus on January 12, 2009, 10:29:04 PM
I haven't lived in one, but I've been in a few.  The best ones were the older buildings that had thick walls and were occupied mostly with graduate students.  They're often near party houses, but the noise didn't seem excessive or anything.  I've been looking around campus planning for signing a lease for next year and mostly just trusting my gut about areas.  There are definitely some within that range that will be more quiet.  I have my eye on one that's about a five minute walk and it didn't seem too bad.  That one was a little northwest of Hutchins, if memory serves.  I'll be looking at more places near campus once I'm back to AA, so I'll write more then.

It's been good.  I've watched My Cousin Vinny so many times I have it memorized.  I also kicked by cousins butts at poker several times.  Seeing the family has been pretty relaxing, but I need to get back -- we start on Wednesday.  Between journal and reading for classes, I'm already behind. :/

There's always time for My Cousin Vinny.

Good luck in starting the new semester.  I'm sure it's beautiful in AA right now with the snow and such and will be even more gorgeous in the spring.  Lots of chances to study outdoors and enjoy the fresh air!  For which journal do you work?  PM me?

Well hello, and thank you. Congrats yourself. Am I to assume that you've decided on Michigan on account of the Darrow?

If so, I kind of hate you (kidding). You will also be expected to know any and all Clarence Darrow trivia cold.

I haven't received any money and I haven't made any decisions.  I'm just really hyped on Michigan and very excited about the possibility of being in Ann Arbor in just 7 short months (eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!  SEVEN MONTHS!!!!!  SO CLOSE!!!!)

If I were so blessed, I promise I will have all the trivia memorized ;D  Maybe I should send that bit of info to Dean Z for consideration?

Have you been to Ann Arbor yet?

Indeed I have been there. Great town. Quite psyched about moving there. I'm so down with two (or are there more?) microbreweries a stone's throw from campus (and of course everything else about the town and school). Hopefully there will still be time to imbibe.

Microbreweries?

This might be a good time for me to start to enjoy beer.  Or rather, this is another thing I could learn from Michigan.

Yet another positive for the school ;D

Who gave Taylor the authority to create threads?  I don't think she/he? had the power able to do that.

The Microbreweries are great.

My house is a 15 minute walk from the law school.  Its in quiet family neighborhood, I was able to bring my dog, and I share a house with two other grad students.  My portion of the rent, with utilities, is under $550 a month (even in the winter with high gas bills).  As for "party" neighborhoods, they tend to be located directly west and/or south of the law school (also known as the undergrad ghetto).  These neighborhoods tend to have loud house parties every 5th house during the weekends in the fall, with 20 or so people playing beer pong in the front yard.  The theft also tends to be higher here from what I understand.  If you go north, or far enough west, you run into graduate students and family neighborhoods that tend to have few or none of these types of parties.  Personally, I think it'd be fun to rent a house in the undergrad ghetto and throw massive parties.  If you do so in the fall, buy some booze, and send a blanket invite to everyone and anyone, you'll be sure to climb up the popularity ladder.

Feel free to reply to this thread, or PM me, for more info on neighborhoods and all things Ann Arbor.

Yeah, although it's rather cold at the moment, most days are mid-high 20s.  You'll be fine (especially with that attitude).

I just froze my balls off walking from the Reading Room to the Union.  Back when I decided to come to Michigan, I told myself I'd be fine, no big deal, I've handled tough temperatures in the Midwest before.  After all, I'm from the rural Midwest.

I was totally full of it.  And I even read that LSD post where you list the worst three things about each T14.  I think the top 3 for Michigan submitted by one poster was three lines of "It gets how effing cold?!?"  Michigan is great, but damn...it's too cold!

Crap!  I've said too much.  Disregard the above.

Go Blue!

It's 5 right now according to my sidebar, but the wind is killing and the low was -4.  Wind chill is probably brutal.  That said, I'm just being over-dramatic.  It's not THAT bad.  You do notice, though.

You'll be fine.  Average highs nearing 30 and average lows in the mid teens.  Single digits below zero (like now) and you're not all that far from record lows.  Check it out. (http://www.weather.com/outlook/driving/interstate/wxclimatology/daily/USMI0028?climoMonth=1&x=13&y=10)

I've been lurking for a while. Accepted last year and deferred. I'm stoked about Michigan in the fall! Now my biggest concern is housing. Should admitted students day make this an easier decision? The cold doesn't scare me. It is 9 with snow and a -? wind chill here today.

For any summer-starters, I am subleasing my place from mid-May to late-August. It's a furnished 1 bedroom and it's within a 7 minute walk from the law school. A free parking space is included, you only have to pay for electricity. Send me a message if you are interested or have more questions.

For the rest of you, take a word of advice...live within a close walk from the law school. You're going to have some early classes, and will be staying in the library late on a lot of nights. Also the buses here are somewhat unreliable, and most people try and avoid them. That being said, the neighborhoods right around campus are noisy and expensive. good luck.

I live not too far from Jolie on the Old West side, about a 12-15 minute walk depending on how fast I'm walking. I love it out here - it's cheaper, quieter, and to be honest sometimes the walk is nice (and I'm a cold weather person so I don't mind the winter). That being said, next year I'm moving a block away from the law quad... I guess I decided to switch it up a little. If anyone has questions about the old west side i would be happy to answer them!

So how generous is Michigan with (non Darrow) merit aid and how hard is it to get? I didn't even expect to be admitted so I'm not holding my breath.

I have Ivy UG debt (my parents were too poor to write a check for tuition and apparently made too much money for grants) and I'm debt adverse. Sadly, I'm also a prestige whore so its hard for me to turn down a T14.

I'm also not straight out of UG and have managed to hold down a job and take care of myself, so I'm guessing my EFC will be atrocious. I'm hoping Mich will help me afford this :(

Bah, who cares about debt.  Sure it sucks, but the job prospects coming out of T14 are too good to pass up.

Even with pretty bad grades, you can probably get into any non-BigLaw job you want.  And you might still be able to get Big Law.

The only thing that would compete w/ a T14, IMHO, is a full ride at a lesser Tier 1, maybe at a Tier 2.

But then again, think about yourself 20 years from now.  Where do you think you'll be w/ a T14 degree versus a Tier 2 degree?  By then you'll be kicking yourself for thinking about your short-term debt prospects (student loans only take 10-15 years to pay off, compared to about 40 years in the work force).

Uh...I care honey, that's why I asked...lol

Thanks for your response though. I have a full ride at Illinois which isn't really on my radar but is still nice to have. I understand the prestige thing but I had issues with finances in UG (worrying about how things would get paid) and I know well enough not to make the same mistakes. Academic and financial issues don't mix. Money definitely has to play a part in my choice unfortunately.

I'm applying for a few outside schollys to so maybe that will help...ughh...I hate this...

I can relate on the money front. I had the double-whammy of a relatively high EFC plus absolutely nothing to show for my salary (apparently they don't consider existing student debt?) and I had financed both my UG and graduate degrees. But a few reassuring words:

1. How long have you been taking care of yourself? I was lucky–I was old enough at matriculation that I could exclude my parents' info, so I ended up with some relatively generous need-based grants. My income was high compared to most new law students, but not compared to their parents!  :D If you've been filing your own income taxes for (I believe it was) 5 years or more, they'll count you as independent.

2. Once you're here, the money issues don't exactly go away, but it's much easier than in UG. Michigan has a program for automatic $1000 short-term loans to cover emergencies, and our Fin Aid office is eminently understanding when things come up and we need more money.

3. Debt is scary, but I think that the new legislation will be a great equalizer (better income-sensitive repayments options; cancellation of principle after 10 years of public/gov't service). Hell, I will almost certainly be walking away from my biglaw offer to take a government job next fall on the strength of these new loan options. Anyway, I can't say enough about the options I've had coming from Michigan . . . worth a lot of debt, IMO.

I can relate on the money front. I had the double-whammy of a relatively high EFC plus absolutely nothing to show for my salary (apparently they don't consider existing student debt?) and I had financed both my UG and graduate degrees. But a few reassuring words:

Thanks for your response as well. I've been supporting myself since 04 so I may only have 4 tax returns to show. Hopefully CM is right that my parents' info isn't needed. I had issues with that too in UG and don't feel like dealing with them for their returns.

I understand what you guys are saying...believe me I do, but I'm still worried. I guess I'll just get my fafsa/fin aid forms in and see what happens...

Mag, that's something that kind of turned me off Duke.  I've been self-supporting really since 1999, but last year my parents had me on their tax return was 2002.  I supported myself through UG and grad school and yet that didn't make a bit of difference for their purposes  :-\

I'm hoping Michigan is altogether more reasonable.  And that's another reason you should just forget Duke :)

But seriously, yeah, that wouldn't work for me. And just saw that after years of not requiring parent info, UVA wants it this year. WTH?! If I get a decent package from Mich based on my own finances...it will definitely move up on my list.

Hey everyone,

For anyone that is interested, I have a fully-furnished 1 bedroom apartment that I am subleasing for the summer. It is only about a 7 minute walk from the law quad. You would only need to pay for electricity, and it comes with a free parking space. I am asking $550, but this is negotiable. Send me a message if you have questions or would like to see pictures.

Thanks

I was wondering about this too. I'm trying to find something that would be nice and close to the law quad and relatively inexpensive. Any suggestions current students?

You're going to get VERY different answers depending on personal characteristics/preferences.
Ex: I hate apartment complexes. Hate them. I'm not fond of the 'burbs, so I prefer to be w/in city limits. I have two large dogs, so that a) limits the places I can rent and b) influences the type of setting I look for. Neighborhood and "character" and setting and price (and in-home laundry) are really important to me, so I sacrifice on things like proximity. LOTS of other people have different needs and rank these things differently. You'll hear plenty of people tell you that you must must must be w/in a 5 minute walk of the law school, but that's a non-starter as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, my super roundabout point is that you're better off figuring out what types of things are important to you, do a little research on Ann Arbor's neighborhoods, and then ask for advice. Otherwise anything I tell you now will be wildly subjective based on my likes/dislikes/whathaveyou.

Now that I've refused to be useful, I'll share some very helpful links. These both tell you about A2's neighborhoods and are a great starting place. I find the umich site slightly better but it's probably worth checking both.

http://www.offcampus.housing.umich.edu/lt/map.cfm (http://www.offcampus.housing.umich.edu/lt/map.cfm)
http://www.arborweb.com/cg/t1300.html (http://www.arborweb.com/cg/t1300.html)

Oh, and for point of reference, I live in (and love!) neighborhood 3 on the school's map.

I cosign everything Jolie said.

I live in the south end of AA in a newer development about a 3-5 minute drive to campus.  If you do end up living further off-campus, don't let people tell you it's impossible to do (especially if you have a car).  I just drive to the Stadium commuter lot, hop on the bus that comes every ten minutes and it drops me off right outside of the law school.

I had a friend that did their undergrad at Michigan and I got plenty of warnings about how touch and go it was regarding properties on (and close to) campus.  I haven't had any problems at the place I'm living at now.  That said, there are some good properties on campus, just be wary when searching.  If you don't have a lot of experience looking critically at places, bring someone (parent, significant other, etc.) to help.

Hi everyone,

I have one bedroom in a 3 bedroom house for sublet (May/June-August). If you so desire, you'll be able to renew the lease in September for the 09-10 year. Living with two law students. Rent is $500/month with cheap utilities (even in winter), parking, FREE laundry. Move in date negotiable. Rent may be negotiable. PM me if interested and I'll link you to pictures, discuss further.

Thanks! : )

At the risk of outing myself in the future, if you come to either ASW, you will likely see me sitting behind one of the Journal tables, tryin' to represent.  I just checked and I have most of the March one free (and will most likely need to be there for the April one).  And yes, there will be candy.  I'm considering making it a game -- if you come up to me and present me with a random My Cousin Vinny quote, I'll identify myself. :D

PS:  Whitney, whatever it takes to get you to stick your tongue out at Hahvahd and come to Big Blue, let me know.  I'll even give you extra candy.

Various inducements to come here are open to negotiation.  Candy, by no means, is the end of the discussion.

And yes, I was hoping a lot of people would wander up to various Journal tables and blurt out "The whole store got the flu!"  If you hear distant laughter, you still figure out who I am!  I just get a little bonus.

I have friends on other journals.  I'll explain to them, if you do it, that you aren't that crazy...that I'm just crafty!

What's the class about?  I think I'm taking a red eye in, so I might feel up for going to the class.

He uses sagas from 10th-12th Century Norse Iceland as a comparative analysis to modern politics, law, and culture.  Its absolutely fascinating and the teacher can go on and on about everything, goes on interesting tangents, and has a really dry sense of humor.  Last class, we talked about the dangerousness of giving gifts (giving too good a gift could get you killed in Iceland, and can make things awkward in contemporary times), and Viking "eggplant" impotence and its implications for marriage arrangements.

I reiterate: you should force yourself to go.  Everyone I know in that class says its the best EVER (including undergrad and law school).   I'll even tell you where I sit if you want to sit w/ someone.

I posted this question earlier in the fin. aid section, but I've a feeling if there's anyone who can help me they might be found in here. So sorry in advance, I don't mean to thread highjack or anything....

Okay, so I applied to Michigan during the 07-08 cycle specifically requesting deferred admission, which was granted. So obviously that's where I'll be going.

The (multi-faceted) question is this: How does Michigan typically inform admitted students of merit based aid, and is this handled by the admissions office or the financial aid office? I know you're 'automatically considered' for merit aid, but I received no info. following my initial acceptance and am not sure whether it's because I'm not getting any or if it's because I deferred and they figured they'd deal with me closer to the time of my entrance date (which is May 09). I will be submitting all my other required financial aid information very soon and just want to make sure that any (potential) merit money is known about and included before the rest of my aid package is calculated and presented to me. And FWIW, my LSAT/GPA combo would place me just slightly ahead of the middle of the pack, so it's not a no-brainer whether I should be expecting money or not. Also, I'm very, very white.

Clearly, I'll get in touch with the school about this, I just (a) wanted to know if I could get any info on here before bugging them; and, (b) was hoping I might find out which is the appropriate office to pester about this before shooting off emails/phone calls.

Many thanks to anyone who can help!

Okay, well thanks. How were you informed, and when? And I guess it's not as if they inform you in any way if you're NOT getting anything? You just assume as much by not hearing anything?

I suppose, ideally, it'd be best to hear from another person who deferred and also received merit money, but I'm sure there aren't tons who frequent this board.

But anyone else with knowledge, please share.

Gotcha.

Probably going to assume I'm not getting any - especially since I've already signed a binding agreement to attend almost a year ago; they've no incentive to bait me with cash.

An email to admissions probably couldn't hurt, though.

Thanks all.

Definitely check in with them. Sarah's not the kind of person (nor is Liz, nor the rest of the staff) who would be put off by a straightforward, "Hey, any chance I'm getting some $$ love?" That said, merit money will definitely come from them rather than Fin. Aid.

I'm going to keep a running list of people who are going to each ASW. I know this is pointless since most people post on TLS, but why not? I'll put it in the second post on the first page of this thread.

I have a feeling I might end up in Michigan in the fall ;), but I'm reserving full judgment until deposit time on the 30th.

Can anyone tell me about the Lawyer's Club living situation?  (I lived in a law student dorm during my first year of grad school...and it's not an experience I would like to repeat again--the people were great, but the building was sub par.)  I'm turned off by the shared bathroom thing, but the convenience seems to even it out. Is the LC closer to an undergrad dorms or more like graduate student studios?

I am also hoping that I can get one of those doubles with the shared living space.  Worth it?

The rooms in the LC are much better than what I had as an undergrad (shared one room with my roommate, shared a bathroom with every dude on the floor).  The LC has a shared living room, two independent bedrooms, and I think a source of water?  At any rate, people in the LC seem to make friends quicker and have more social options.

Figured I'd branch out a bit and check out LSD too. Congrats all!

So... is this forum pretty much done? I recognize a couple people from TLS but other than that it seems pretty empty here.

For any summer starters, I was wondering when everyone is getting into town. Anyone want to meet up for dinner/drinks? I'd be down to hang with any current students who are still in town too.

I'm moving in on the 18th.
