Title: So far jumped from 143 diag to 160s. 20+ points jump. Will try for 170
Post by: SwEep on September 11, 2008, 02:53:03 PM
I am one of the few individuals who scared 143 on the diag. I knew nothing of LSAT when i took it and had no prior exposure to any lsat materials. since i took a course and studied on my own for a few months I was able to get it up in the low 160s. I am taking the oct lsat and try my best. but by december i think i can break 170s.

anyone experience 20+ points jump?

first off, seeing the 20+ point jump from you is inspiring especially for someone like me who isn't someone who scored a 160 the first time around.

i've been a lurker around here at the boards but i wanted to ask you how you were able to raise your score that high? my range was where you started and unfortunately, i haven't been improving that much and i've been studying for the past 3 months. i'm only consistently scoring 151-154. how did you do it?

are you planning on taking the lsat in oct or dec?

by the way, i think i read somewhere that you are undocumented? more power to you!

Hey, I started at 143 (cold) too, and within a few days, after reading a Kaplan book, got up to 152. Then after the LG Bible, I was at 158. I read the LR Bible a few times but can't get above a 160 yet...always -5 to -9 on LR. So, I'm ALMOST at the 20 point jump.

I'm waiting for the RC Bible to come, bought some deconstructed tests, and I'm just praying I get at least a 164.

All from self-study! And with a month off--no studying at all.

Just keep working for it and pushing yourself. The bibles and practice tests are the answer.

i am planning on taking both. there's no secret to raising the score; you just have to work at it on a daily basis and give yourself more than enough time.

kudos to you for improving your score by that much. how long did it take you? I took the LSAT cold and got a 150, but I'm hoping I could get it up to 170+ (preferably 175+) by Feb.
Do any others think this improvement is possible in 4 months?

but have you take into consideration that my diag was extremely low. so it's easier to improve to somewhere more optimal. kind of like improving from F to C, but from C to A is another story.

Hey sweep, good job with your LSAT prep. I've also jumped 20+ points into the 170s in about 8 weeks.

I think the first 10 points are relative easy (since, your score increases simply by virtue of the fact that you begin to familiarize with the types of questions on the LSAT). The remaining 10 points is mainly strategy and review/understanding of incorrect answer choices. Best of luck on your Dec LSAT, I think I'll continue to push for Oct.

Hey, I'm right with you guys. I got a 151 on the diagnostic (not cold).  And have worked my butt off and steadily increased; 151, 153, 161, 165, 164, 167 (this past tuesday).  I'm hoping I can pull off the upset and bring home a 170+ by october.  Knowing you guys are out there grinding helps me keep my motivation up! Let's beat the odds and go give em a show this october.

(And I agree, no secret - just hard  work, and learning to trust yourself and not fear the test)

I also experienced an almost 20 point jump from my first diagnostic.  I was at 143 on my first try.  After taking a course, reading both PS books twice over and seriously putting in roughly 7-8 hours a day of studying a day, I've been steadily hitting a 161-162 on my preptests.

Unfortunately, I'm seriously worried that I won't break 160 on the real thing due to my horrendous test-stress.  But come October, I should be complete with taking most, if not all, the Preptests (timed) and should be confident enough to hit a 164 like I intend to.

But I have to admit, when I first came onto this board, the few boarders that were claiming these tremendous jumps really inspired me to work as hard as possible.  I knew it wasn't gonna be simple for a 143'er to break a 160 by giving it 3-5 hours a week.  But all the hard work and the advice I'm receiving seems like it's definitely paying off.

Its all about trusting yourself.

Most people I have practiced with have been able to master LG and RC with enough patience, so they don't freak out about them anymore, and just do it. No one ever scores less 2-3 on either section, and rarely between them.

Same with Logical reasoning, although due to its varied content it seems to take more time. But with enough practice tests that say 170, you will not stress out, you will assume 4-8 logical reasoning mistakes, and no more then 2-4 games/RC, if you miss 10 you get at least 170...

Yes its possible you will bomb, but with the mentality above, the improvement I have seen is CRAZY. Most ppl from 140 first diagnostic to all 165+ on most practice tests. Don't think about the test as random, just do it like a robot.

I've seen 20+ point jumps more than once.  This test is a skill, and as such can be developed with time and effort.  Keep up the good work!

I too started very low with my first diagnostic at 141.  Many months later and here I am at 160.  I'm taking the October LSAT, but also signed up for the December LSAT just in case the October one doesn't go as planned.  Here's hoping for a 160+...
